When rational, dependable, highly organised and happily married Sarah laughs hysterically at her friend’s devastating news, tries to publicly seduce her husband, has a meltdown at work and refutes her constant headaches and forgetfulness, her family and friends begin demanding answers. Will Sarah face the truth about her condition or … will she run away?
Kate Beattie is an adult contemporary fiction author, a primary school educator and an observer of the world. Her characters are authentic and brave, and she weaves her passion for sustainability, travel and parenting into her stories. Writing is a creative outlet that allows her to explore and reflect upon life’s shareable moments, and gives her an identity beyond ‘Mum’ and ‘Mrs Beattie’.
I really enjoyed my time with Sarah and the many other characters in this story. I found some of Sarah's choices questionable, although I cannot know how I would react in similar circumstances.
‘Complaining was just a way to create common ground, wasn’t it? The universal and relatable language of the espoused’
I am keen to read more from Aussie independently published author Kate Beattie.
A Few Shades Greener is not the sort of book I'd normally reach for with romance, always my go-to. But, I have to state HOW GLAD I AM THAT I DID! This was my read of the month as in my tops for the year. Finding a new to me author was only the first gem of this journey. Sarah's journey is relatable, eliciting tears and love and compassion. It was gutwrenching and wonderful and all the feels, and I can't recommend reading this one enough.
Truly. Kate Beattie's debut is a beautifully written piece of contemporary literature. 💚

💌This was such a good read, it’s one of those books you get into straight away, the writing was perfect and made my reading experience effortless and easy to absorb into the story.
💌 Sarah’s story was heart breaking in places and I was genuinely so scared for her, the character was really well fleshed out and I could see what was happening to her so vividly I just wanted to intervene the nurse part of me was horrified! I am the eldest of 6 siblings so I could relate so much to Sarah and her family dynamics.
💌 The real strength in this story was in the relationships, the best friend with honesty and love all the way through and her little sister always being her cheerleader❤️. But for me the relationship with her husband was so well written, all the love and intricacies of real intimacy, although *(tiny-light-spoiler-ahead)* I’m not sure I’ve completely forgive James yet!
Ultimately this book is about Finding your true self, your passion and human relationships in all their complicated glory.

When rational, dependable, highly organised and happily married Sarah laughs hysterically at her friend's devastating news, tries to publicly seduce her husband, has a meltdown at work and refutes her contant headaches and forgetfulness, her family and friends begin demanding answers. Thank you to @katebeattie.writer for the Arc in exchange for an honest review
If your computer starts throwing out the wrong messages, responding erratically, alerting you that some little thing has gotten out of whack, it doesn’t know it’s doing anything wrong and you need to call in an expert to fix it. Lucky computer: it’s got you to take control and hopefully get it running smoothly again. Unfortunately, when some little thing in your brain, your own personal computer, gets out of whack you’re not on the outside looking in and it’s up to those closest to you to observe the changes and try to get through to you.
Sarah is a young woman secure in the love of her husband, family and friends. Her job on a local city council has never been particularly interesting but she is now finding it difficult to remember parts of it and to keep up with changes. She has always had two ambitions, writing and conservation, and she is hoping to fulfil those ambitions some day.
A Few Shades Greener is the story of how Sarah becomes caught in a world not of her own choosing. She doesn’t know how lucky she is that she has people around her who care enough to want to help her when she starts behaving uncharacteristically. It’s also an honest look at how the most understanding, sympathetic person’s ego is put to the test. Sarah’s passion for greening the environment is a true calling and makes for a most interesting and entertaining book by Kate Beattie, another terrific Australian writer.
I was with Sarah all the way, looking for that light at the end of the tunnel, even when she wasn’t aware that’s what we were doing.
This was a debut novel gifted to me by the author. Thank you for the complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review.
I loved the premise of the story. The main character, 31 year old Sarah, has been struggling with headaches, has become extra forgetful, impulsive, and acting somewhat out of character for months. Her family and friends have noticed but Sarah thinks they are all crazy. This leads to loads of problems for everyone and so begins the story…
Sarah’s sister, Casey, was my favorite character. She displayed an unwavering love and support for her sister that I just adored!
I had mixed feelings and was so frustrated with the immaturity of both Sarah and her husband, James, throughout a good part of the book. BUT their reactions and responses (or lack of) were excellent reminders that not everyone deals with stress and fear the same way.
While I think the storyline was a good one…the pace was a bit too slow for me. There was a lot of plot filler in the first half that left me wishing for a deeper dive into the actual storyline itself and less of the extra. In comparison, the last half does pick up and I appreciated the closure at the end.
If you don’t mind a slow burn and enjoy books about medical issues, marriage, dilemmas, green living, and sustainability you may want to check this one out!
I think this could make for a very interesting book club discussion. My guess is there would be LOTS of varying opinions about what everyone would do if they found themselves in this particular scenario…and that’s always fun!
This assured debut from Aussie novelist Kate Beattie is a real surprise package. I went in expecting something light and feel good, but what I got was an intriguing story arc that kept me turning the pages, along with an interesting exploration of what a person might go through when confronted with a health issue that isn't presenting in any kind of cut and dried way.
Sarah was a really relatable character and, as I read, I found myself trying to put myself in her shoes...wondering just how I would handle my life spinning out of control in the way hers did. Such an interesting premise!
A Few Shades Greener contains notes of all the things I look for in a great read, like family relationships (I'm from a big family and connected with Sarah's feelings of getting lost in the crowd), the challenges faced in romantic relationships (the journey Sarah and James' marriage goes through is central to the story), and the importance of friendship. Oh, and I really liked the closeness Sarah forged with her littlest sister Casey, despite their age gap. Again, this made me reflect on the relationships I have with my own siblings and the ones that have deepened in adulthood in ways I hadn't expected.
Sink your teeth into this story today 💜...and I see Kate has another book due out really soon, so there won't be long to wait to read more of her writing:)
A few shades greener is Kate Beattie’s debut novel and is the story of 31 year old, happily married Sarah who has started experiencing some inexplicable changes in her personality, such as, forgetfulness, impulsive behaviour and indecisivness. While deep-down Sarah knows something is not right, on the surface, denial is so much easier. When her loving, supportive husband and family confront her, she slowly opens to the possibility of finding out what might be going on. But when she’s confronted with the truth, she runs away to spend time alone, and things start to spiral for her until she finds herself facing a potentially life-altering surgery. It’s through this condition and time alone that she rediscovers her passion for sustainability and writing, but also needs to come to terms with the actions that have pushed loved ones away.
This is a lovely story about the complexities of life and relationships and makes you question what you’d do if you were in the same situation as Sarah (the main character). I felt for Sarah as she battled an unknown condition and how to navigate the effects that had on her life. I look forward to Kate's next book!
A Few Shades Greener was captivating, seriously one of those books you find glued to your hand at 12:30 in the morning refusing to put down.
This beautiful story takes you through the complexities of marriage, family, friendship, denial and hope, with an ever so relatable country Australian setting. Sarahs story is perfectly intriguing, with unimaginable curve balls thrown as she tries to cling onto her comfortable life. It’s simply impossible to not find yourself racing through pages at a time begging for more details as Sarah’s personality, career, personal life, and relationships evolve without her control.
Kate’s writing style is so natural, and it’s unbelievable to know this is her first published novel. Her spellbinding ability to make you FEEL exactly what Sarah is experiencing is incredible; your stomach sinks and flutters, your heart shatters and warms, eyes welling throughout.
Congratulations on your first publish Kate I’m so excited to read whatever flows out of your pen next.
I read this book on the flight to Bali and it was the perfect escape - an easy and enjoyable read.
Kate is a local writer and this is her debut novel. I was lucky enough to attend her book launch in Riddells Creek earlier in the year.
I felt immediately transported into the protagonist’s world in A Few Shades Greener and really enjoyed that she, Sarah, worked at Hume City Council (a family member worked there years ago) and that the novel was set in my local area. It all felt familiar and relatable.
The story centres around Sarah and how she has been doing some uncharacteristic things in recent times, affecting her friendships, work and home life. Her family and friends are concerned for her wellbeing as Sarah becomes increasingly erratic, impulsive and suffers from intense headaches. Will she ever face her symptoms and get help or will she run away from it all?
If you’re looking for a great holiday read, why not support a local Australian author and purchase A Few Shades Greener? 💚
This was such a high-quality, well-written indie read that gripped me from start to finish. My usual genre is romance, but that didn't matter; I adored Kate's writing, and this heartfelt story was thought-provoking and seamless. I devoured it in a day.
Set in Australia, A Few Shades Greener is contemporary fiction that explores limiting beliefs, the clash between pursuing passions and practicality, relationships, and the lengths one woman will go to avoid facing reality. Sarah, our heroine, is passionate about sustainability too, and her passion is infectious.
The characters were a delight and fully formed. I empathised deeply with Sarah. I was so annoyed with James towards the end. No spoilers, but yeah… Grrr. At the same time, I can't promise I would have behaved any better than he did. The situation was complex and would probably make for a great book club discussion.
Thank you to Kate Beattie for writing and publishing this gem of a novel. It's a fantastic debut, and I look forward to reading whatever she writes next!
I couldn’t out this book down! I found myself wondering what would happen and what was causing the main character Sarah to behave in ways that weren’t herself. I like that there was a reason, rather than in some books, it just seems like poor decision making which I find so frustrating to read!
I also loved the portrayal of the lengths us humans will go to avoid facing something we’re scared of. My favourite quote is “Bravery is not about being fearless. It's about being scared and doing it anyway”. This really spoke to me because we often think other people are braver than us but the truth could be quite different.
I found witnessing the evolution of the main character Sarah as well as the interactions between her and her sister were real winners for me.
If you enjoy stories about real to life characters, flaws and all, you will love this book!
What a fabulous debut novel by Australian author Kate Beattie. I absolutely devoured this captivating and heartfelt story in one day and have spent the last two days thinking about it and how to do it justice in a review.
The story centres around Sarah, a rational, dependable, highly organised and happily married woman. But she laughs hysterically at her friend's absolutely devastating news, tries to publicly seduce her husband, has a meltdown at work and refutes her constant headaches and forgetfulness. While her family and friends demand answers, Sarah denies there is anything wrong.
Kate’s beautiful writing style explores the human traits of denial and dismissiveness when scared, and has you feeling like you are in Sarah’s shoes where the fears and doubts exist. I had goosebumps in places and found myself holding my breath in others.
The story explores the strengths of sisterly bonds and best friends, and staying true to yourself. It also includes a mystery flight, and my favourite, ice-cream wagers!
I highly recommend A Few Shades Greener which is available now!
Kate Beattie's A Few Shades Greener is a thought-provoking narrative of sustainability and personal growth presented to a wide audience for which this is relatable. Kate's writing is both engaging and accessible, the characters are well-developed, each representing different perspectives of the sustainability debate, and therefore providing a balanced approach of what it means to be environmentally conscious in today's society.
The pacing is well-structured, with a mix of heartfelt moments and humorous exchanges that keep the reader invested. The vivid descriptions of both characters and setting created an immersive reading experience. The personal growth element of the novel was thoughtfully portrayed and again provided different perceptions, reactions and emotions towards a potentially life-threatening situation. Highly recommended!
“A Few Shades Greener” is a beautifully written novel that delves into the complexities of human emotions and relationships, particularly when one is reluctant to face their fears. Kate weaves a tale of love, denial and confrontation, capturing what it means to care for someone truly. The characters are well-developed and relatable, making it easy for readers to connect with their struggles and triumphs. Kate’s narrative is elegant and descriptive, yet accessible, allowing readers to get lost in the story effortlessly. Her message is clear: when we stop worrying about the outcome and try, we open up to endless possibilities.
It's hard to believe that this is the authors first novel as her writing skills are that of a seasoned writer. This novel has it all, love, heartache, suduction adventure, fear and more. The author has a wonderful way of describing sites and smells which enriches your imagination with her descriptions. The author allows you to enjoy being inside the mind of the main character without giving away the twist in the story. The story has a great build up and I enjoyed the heart-warming ending. Was a really good read I can't wait to see what this young author comes out with next.
This book is outside my usual genres, but I’m so glad I gave it a chance!
Written by a fellow Aussie indie author, this women’s fiction novel pulled me in emotionally more than I expected. I found myself so frustrated with the FMC (which was definitely the intention) because she was in such denial about what was happening to her. But at the same time, it was a powerful reminder that not everyone processes things the way you would.
A moving, thought-provoking read—I’m so glad I stepped outside my comfort zone for this one!
Firstly I want to thank the author for reaching out to offer me a copy of this ebook. It was such a hard to put down heart wrenching read. I love books that make you think about how short life can be and this was definitely one of them. Plus the sustainability, for the earth theme was right up my alley as I love that kind of thing. Kate Beattie has a fantastic book with this one and her writing just flows so naturally.
As someone who struggles to get swept away in a story and stay engaged while reading, this book had me hooked! (Which is a feat in itself! and a testament to the author)
I found myself truly feeling for the characters, getting frustrated by their stubbornness, reflecting on the complexities of relationships when faced with some of the tough things life throws at us.
Firstly, I want to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book to enjoy.
This was an excellent debut novel. I read it over 2 days because I just could not put it down. I was captivated and absolutely had to know what was going to happen next.
The emotions of this story absolutely jump off the page. I felt like I was right there experiencing every high and low with the main character. Highly recommend this Aussie debut.
This was such a good surprise! A Few Shades Greener is beautifully written and thought-provoking. Sarah is a strong protagonist with a solid voice, and I kept finding myself not only putting myself on Sarah's shoes, but also reflecting on my own life, on the complexities of relationships - family, friendship, marriage.
All in all, A Few Shades Greener is a stunning debut novel. Looking forward to seeing what Kate does next!
Being a big reader who normally sticks to well known authors , on recommendation decided to give this book a go, first novel by new author and I absolutely loved it , could picture the suburbs in the novel and that made it so more believable and enjoyable , just couldn’t put it down once I’d started, so looking forward to following this new author and reading her next novel .
I was hooked within the first few pages. Questions about Sarah and her behaviour, had me guessing and thinking and wondering as I read each chapter... what will happen next? Surely not? Oh no! I couldn't put the book down and devoured it in two days. Such an amazing debut and I can't wait to read Kate's next novel.
This is legitimately one of the best books I’ve ever read and I almost exclusively read fantasy and sci-fi. So many aspects of this story were relatable for me and I couldn’t put it down. I read almost the entire book in a day which is unheard of for me. An absolutely amazing story that I will be recommending to everyone.
Once I got started I couldn't stop! The writing style flows so naturally, it was a brilliant and enjoyable read. The story was packed full of relatable characters and the storyline twists and turns had me reading on. A great read if you’re looking for that next book to get hooked on.
What a great read…to follow the main character through the ups and downs of life and love, while watching her find joy in her passion and overcoming some incredible hurdles. You always wanted more and it was a great book to pick up for me each night before bed…
What a fabulous debut book this is - very descriptive, witty and relatable - Kate’s main character Sarah takes you on her personal journey of highs and lows while keeping you engaged and curious about the next twist and turn….loved it :)
I was hooked by Sarah’s character by the first chapter. Very good and easy read. The story was likeable and relatable which made me want to finish it quicker. Can not wait for more books from Kate Beatie.
I have just put down this novel with a contented sigh. The journey of life expressed through the eyes of the main character and the depth of emotion captured carried me on the ups and downs of the story. Congrats and thank you Kate 😊
Kate’s debut novel did not disappoint! The relatable characters and attention to detail in the descriptions made it hard to put down. The story pulls at your heartstrings and stays on your mind long after you finish it. Highly recommend!
