Why We Celebrate Earth Day is the latest edition in the Why We Celebrate series and is a lovely informative book for children about why we celebrate Earth Day and how it came to be.
The book raises awareness of the day and how we can do more to protect the planet we live on. The information is easy to understand for the age group it is aimed at (age 6-9 years) and topics covered are; recycling, conservation, sustainability, who invented Earth Day and why, ways to celebrate, and much more.
The illustrations are calming and befitting of the book and content, and I'd highly recommend this book to any teacher for their classroom for science and Earth Day, which is coming soon.

Earth Day

This book is a fantastic educational resource for introducing young learners to the importance of Earth Day and environmental conservation. It covers a wide range of topics, from recycling and sustainability to the impact of human actions on the planet. While the content is quite detailed and may be a lot for younger children to absorb in one sitting, it provides a solid foundation for meaningful discussions.

What makes this book particularly useful is its adaptability for the classroom. Teachers can easily break it down into smaller lessons, focusing on key themes over multiple sessions. It would work especially well as part of an inquiry unit, allowing students to engage with the material at their own pace and explore environmental issues in a hands-on, interactive way.

Overall, this is a well-structured and informative book that will be an asset to any classroom or learning environment looking to deepen students’ understanding of Earth Day and sustainability.

I liked this book, there was plenty of detail and I loved the illustrations in the book - they were nice, bright and colourful and helped bring the book to life. I liked the book covered why we do celebrate Earth Day on the 22nd April, the history of it and how it has grown since the first Earth Day on 22nd April 1970 to now be a global holiday and its development to become a week-long eco-event in some locations and the different celebrations that take place around the world such as in Switzerland, India, Japan, Brazil, Australia and in the Philippines. My daughter's school does celebrate Earth Day and they do have an eco-team at school that takes part in regular litter picking at the local park which we have both taken part in, so she enjoyed reading the book and getting some extra details on the topic as well as other ways to get involved such as planting something green, making recycled art, eating only the vegetables in season locally to cut down on the carbon footprint for them getting to the local supermarkets from overseas, making donations to charity for toys and clothing to give them a second chance with another family and making sure that you recycle as much as you can. The illustrations in the book were great, they were nice, bright and colourful and help bring the book to life. The book was well written and it was easy to read and understand. It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended and a must for any Primary School Library too!

Why We Celebrate Earth Day by Kelly Anne McLellan may be aimed at children ages 6 to 9 but I think the information is great for any age group from children to adult.

This book explains what Earth Day is, gives the history of the day, gives information to help celebrate Earth day now, and shares ways other countries celebrate earth day since it went global in 1990.

Near the end of the book are some activities with directions to do to celebrate earth day. You could learn how to make recycle crayons, use leftover fruit to make a fruit smoothie, make an upcycled bird feeder or make a recycle print.

Another feature of this book that I thought was interesting was the pages that share how to say and pronounce earth day in other countries.

At the back of the book there is also a glossary.

This book would be fun to use as a family. It could also be helpful for any school teacher or homeschool teacher to use to help learn about and celebrate earth day.

A book in a series that explains our cultural holidays, that by necessity here turns into an eco-lesson. There is no purpose to having an Earth Day if it's not for the environmental reasons, and in describing the relevant activities, thinking and, if you like, celebrations, it has to inform us about the issues and what easy steps the bulk of us should be following to sort them out. (I don't know about the paragraph about space junk, mind – that might not be the greatest bit here for us to follow.) It's all fine stuff, but it does seem a touch out of place in the series as it stood up to now.

There are a lot of goodies included, and good for the classroom (and could be adapted for the individual) there wasn't a lot of new. However, the activities you can do, and learning how to say Earth Day in other languages is fun.

This book tries to cover too much ground in too little space, and as a result, it doesn’t fully succeed at any of its goals. It either needed to be longer to explore its many topics in depth or should have focused on fewer subjects with more clarity. The wide recommended age range (5–10) makes sense, as the text swings between overly simplified language and surprisingly technical explanations. That said, the illustrations are the standout feature—colorful, engaging, and easily the most enjoyable part of the book.
