Hmm. This was my first S I Martin book and whilst it was captivating and encouraged me to complete it, I'm not sure this will stick long in the memory.
It covers an important part of history but reading it, there seemed to be a lot of the Hornblower series contained within the writing. Maybe this was an influence, but unfortunately in my opinion you would be best sticking to this series if you're keen on the rise of the humble 'landman' through the naval ranks.

There are others in this series but
