New Approaches to European History #19

Artisans in Europe, 1300-1914

This book is an introduction to the history of work in general and of artisans in particular in Europe from 1300 to 1914. It focuses on many aspects of artisan culture, including economic and guild life, and discusses social, rebellious, ceremonial and leisure experience as well. Women, masters, journeymen, apprentices, and non-guild workers all receive substantial treatment, and the text is illuminated with fascinating illustrations.

I had to get this book for my history class. I hope to eventually get the opportunity to read through majority of this book, since we only read excerpts for class.

The beginning was slow, but I loved chapter 5 and the information on the rebellion of the journeymen toward masters in the guilds.

The guilds in the towns in the general are such a fascinating time period and atmosphere.
