Getting what he wants turns Thomas’s world upside down, forcing him to start over – again.

Like the streets of his 18th-century Paris home, Thomas Pichon’s life is full of twists and turns. Despite winning his wife’s forgiveness for an extramarital affair, Thomas and his lover, Hélène, are caught a second time, and decide that it’s time for new beginnings – in London. As a

The Maze is the second book in a proposed series of four, centered around the life of Thomas Pichon; a real life Frenchman and man of many careers and mysteries who eventually came to North America (Fortress Louisbourg) during the time of the French-English wars of the mid 1700s. Johnston, a recognized scholar on the history of Atlantic Canada, with thirteen books, over 100 articles, and a chevalier of France’s Ordre des Palmes académiques; began in Thomas: A Secret Life, his fictionalized versi ...more

With the surprises starting in the first five pages, “The Maze” proves itself as a page turner. Johnston’s Pichon is a remarkable character, serving in a powerful position in 18th Century Paris, but subject to a more mature and powerful wife, Marguerite. Despite this, he repeatedly risks his status to spend time with the woman who he truly loves, or at least lusts after, Helene. After their relationship is uncovered, Pichon and Helene flee to London, which Johnston brings to life by weaving incr ...more

Ambition, passion and betrayal!

I finished "The Maze" by AJB Johnston a few days ago, and it is definitely a winner! The maze is the setting for the opening gambit (gambol!), as well as a description of Our Hero's life direction. Although based on a historical figure, the author has made his Thomas Pichon a delightful combination of human character and frailty. He has benefited from ambition and marrying well, but passion and betrayal take their toll. While there is indeed passion, I must commend

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. Historical fiction is my all time favorite genre so I was excited to read this. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. It wasn't a bad book, but it just didn't really hold my attention. The "twists and turns" decribed on the book jacket was really nothing but a self centered man having an affair.
