No Planet for Good Men: A Sheriff Duke Story Forgotten Fallout, Book 1 By: M.R. Forbes Narrated by: Jonathan Davis I love this author's books, especially the Ghost & Magic series! This had plenty of action, imagination, and great characters but at times I had a hard time trying to figure out if the Sheriff was talking or the Marine, Isaac. It got confusing in some areas. I still enjoyed the story and will certainly continue the series but the narrator was not the usual narrator and the other one has a voice that could perform a thousand voices and I could always keep track. Hope the next book is a bit better!
All that was a hoot! Non stop action. This is a hybrid sci fi western . I wish the alien monster things hadn’t been called ‘trife ‘ because my brain kept reading it as ‘trifle’ which was very annoying! Going back to the beginning of the series now in Forgotten.
Awful stuff... some good ideas, but so poorly executed and organized as to be Awful.... Only made it about 100 pages before tossing it in the trash-- a fate it truly deserved.
7/10:Good solid read, something to get your teeth into.
Oh, it was so good to be back in this world. I LOVE this author. When I pick up one of his books, I know I'm in for a good time. It was just what the doctor ordered.
You’re a Marine. A warrior. You keep fighting until you can’t fight anymore.
I enjoyed the addition of Isaac to this storyline. Another marine with a moral compass and a sad history. That combination really works.
He was a lawman in a world without laws.
Of course, it was good to see Sheriff Duke again and to see him dispense his kind of justice.
He didn’t take pleasure in killing people. But he did find comfort in justice.
And then we started to see the timelines and certain plotlines merging.
This is my planet. This is my food. I hunger.
This is a great world Forbes has created with fascinating characters I want to read about. It's gritty and full of bloodshed, but the words flow and the story moves and before you know it, you're at the end.
Thankfully, this author is a quick writer, because it never seems too long between instalments.
I just have one thing to say, however, please Mr Forbes, write another series like War Eternal. I love the Forgotten World but I hunger for some more space fleet action! Hunger! ;)
These books just keep getting better and better! Love syfy? These stories are for you,a whole universe of alien invasion! Thanks so much M.R. Forbes for getting these stories out to us month after month! I do look forward to them!
I bought this book with high expectations of an enjoyable story and a few pleasurable hours spent reading it. I was sadly very disappointed. For me persoptje story had no natural flow, no explanation of what is happening, what had happened, and what is going to happen. The characters were not very well developed at the beginning, causing me to loose interest fairly quick into the story.
200 years and still wondering if the car will start? Reloading a revolver faster than dropping a clip from an automatic and slapping in a new one? Those are only two examples of how an imaginative writer with only a movie watchers knowledge of science and technology writes a story. Add the laziness to not be bothered learning new things to improve his writing and you have M.R. Forbes. If you’re a glutton for punishment like me you might enjoy these books. Just don’t forget I told you so when you realize that every sticky situation is resolved with the cliche, “and then a miracle happens”. That technology over two hundred years old behaves like the mythic Hollywood six-shooter (remember the 3 second two revolver reload under heavy fire? There you go.) and so on… Finally, I give two stars, one for imagination and one because I can’t give zero. Oh well, someone has to counter those inexplicable positive reviews. I doubt any of the Marvel Movie generation sees anything amiss anyway. Take a pass on the whole series, be stronger than me. Mr Forbes won’t be going beyond this self published ego stroke into the land of real authors anyway.
This tale contains a mix of elements from games/stories like Fallout 4 (by Bethesda), Starcraft, Mad Max, and Aliens. In fact, the beginning borrowed so many elements of Fallout 4 that I almost thought it was a knockoff. Thankfully it takes on more originality as the story progresses. Since I like these genres, I did end up liking the book as a whole. A mix of SF, Apocalypse, and even a smidge of Western. The characters were believable most of the time and much of the dialogue felt realistic. There were moments I got confused with certain happenings or details, but that could be due to my mind drifting at parts. It was a little jarring how the person I thought was the protagonist took a backseat to another character introduced later in the tale. Overall though, it was an enjoyable read and I plan to get the next book in the series.
Another great start for a new trilogy featuring our favorite sci-fi Sheriff. No Planet for Good Men starts shortly after where the Forgotten Earth series left us. As if fighting the trife was not enough, new enemies are discovered that could change everything from here, to Proxima and beyond... A Sheriff Duke novel is synonymous of badass, sci-fi action. Take a classic western, mix it up with some Fallout, Mad Max, and a pinch of Warhammer 40k Tyranids, and you’ll get a glimpse of what to expect of the Forgotten Fallout Earth: a planet left behind and infested with xenotrife, yet still thriving with people trying to survive as best they can.
As with the other books in The Sheriff Duke Universe, this is another well written, well edited, and fast-paced chapter in the far reaching storyline. I don't feel it is appropriate for a reviewer to give the story away, that is the task of the author. All I can say is that the best part of these books is that they are each a self-contained story that is part of a much larger storyline. No Planet for Good Men is the first of the Forgotten Fallout series. The characters are believable, the dialog is realistic, and the story is credible it you suspend disbelief enough to accept the dystopian future credibly created by M. R. Forbes.
Yet another great book in the forgotten universe. I really hope these books don't end but it seems like their getting closer and closer as more things are revealed!
As a lot of this book was centred around introducing a new character into the universe there was less violence than in the other books of the series, it didn't take anything away from the story. It's still very good!
I've said everything I really can about these books in the reviews that I've left on every other one and I don't want to spoil the story.
Forbes has given us another great installment in the forgotten universe. Always unforgettable characters and an unrelenting pace. I thought the trife were bad, the relyeh are even worse. If you are just starting the series, save this one for later get the first one. You will not be disappointed.
Good storytelling-, but the constant overcoming of impossible odds is getting boring. The sheriff never misses, always has just enough ammo, someone saves his butt. Getting harder and harder to swallow. Still liked the story, just starting to get old after reading the whole series.
With the earth devastated by an alien force, Isaac wakes 200 years later, to find a harsh world facing a new threat. Sheriff Duke is trying hard to make the earth a better place for what is left of the population, but can even he stop this new threat. Good book that is part of a wider universe, this was probably not the best place to start reading from!!
As always, the favorite sheriff of this series finds himself knee deep in trouble and a mystery that's at least two hundred years old. As many of these stories that I read, the characters are still fresh and vibrant, storyline still engaging, and the action is front and center. A very good series to read.
Outstanding, good to see Sherriff Duke back in action working toward a lofty goal. I look forward to the next mission out for the UWT and Sherriff Duke. Thanks for a GoodRead.
A combo of Mad Max and Aliens and Judge Dredd - can't be bad!.
Great book - plenty of action and a solid sci-fi apocalypse storyline. Decent characters all chasing after each other - super fun! It works for me and I would like to check out the next instalment.
This book is very entertaining! A very good storyline most deserving of a 5 star rating! The writer helps you connect to each character and be part of the story! Can't wait to read book 2!
I can't get enough of this series of books. The characters all come together eventually and the action is great. If you love sci fi you have to read these books!
We learn more about the alien races seeking to control earth, and meet some interesting characters along the way. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
I really enjoy MR Forbes in the urban fantasy genre, while still kickass I feel like this series is a bit bogged down by the forced narrative. There are a lot of things that would have been lovely to have explored instead of the central storyline.
Another good man, and a good woman, join Sheriff Duke in his increasingly challenging quest to save the world! Gripping stuff. I’m so glad there are many more books to follow.
I thought I saw the last of Sheriff Duke and his better half when I finished the series "Forgotten" but they are back. The book has a lot of action, a new mystery, and new helpers for Sheriff Duke. I enjoyed the book.
I’m unable to really describe how much I’m enjoying this series for the second time. I keep checking the recommended reading order. Please inform of any updates. Thank you so much for exciting story, characters one cannot help but love and despise…
