Rate this book
Solving their own murders is the least of their problems...and the beginning of Stone & Steele, a reluctant yet surprisingly skilled investigative team.

The Golden Age of Hollywood, 1938. Vivian Steele moved to California to start a new life. She opened a fashion boutique in Beverly Hills, befriended Carole Lombard, the actress, and married a successful banker. But when her husband is murdered, Vivian discovers she's not the only one hiding a few secrets.

An anonymous phone call lures Vivian to a plush hotel room where she stumbles upon the dead body of a beautiful young actress – her husband’s mistress. To add fuel to the fire, she isn’t alone.

Preston Stone, Hollywood’s beloved playboy and Vivian's nemesis, is standing beside her. Suspiciously, they part ways only to find themselves alone again at a movie premiere two days later, and the message becomes brutally clear. They’re both the next targets of a cold-blooded killer.

Together, Vivian and Preston are thrown into a deadly race to find a missing collection of valuable coins and stop a vicious killer before they become the next murder victims. But first, they need to stop pointing their fingers at each other.

A Perilous Premiere is the first book in this exciting new 1930s murder mystery series starring a great cast of characters ranging from the rich and famous to Bella, a Boston Terrier, her new friend, Boris, a Saint Bernard, and a few other endearing folks. (A pretty clean read.

This launch of the 'Stone and Steele' mysteries, set in old Hollywood, has the discordant detective team working together for the first time.

*****

It's the mid-1930s, and fashion designer/boutique owner Vivian Steele.....

.....and her banker husband George Ramsay are strolling down Hollywood Boulevard, talking about their upcoming anniversary dinner. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes.

George steps into a drugstore for a pack of cigarettes, and is shot dead by a man in black.

The police don't catch the killer, and Vivian makes up her mind to avenge the crime herself. Six months later, Vivian thinks she knows who murdered her husband.

However, things aren't as they seem, and the truth involves corruption in the police department and the mayor's office.

After George's death, Vivian moves into the apartment above her boutique, where she lives with her little Boston terrier Bella.

Some of Vivian's friends are her boutique assistant Nora - who's learning the ropes of the fashion industry;

Vivian's neighbor Maria - who sometimes babysits Bella;

and actress Carole Lombard - who's outgoing, witty, and lots of fun.

Vivian agrees to go to Carole Lombard's garden party, despite the fact Carole invited Hollywood playboy Preston Stone. Vivian is angry at Preston for breaking her sister's heart, but Preston is popular in California circles, and Vivian can't avoid him.

Still, Vivian is surprised to see Preston again a few days later, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Vivian is there to meet an anonymous woman who phoned her, claiming to have important information. In the lobby, Vivian sees Preston Stone, and they both appear to be headed for the same hotel room.

When Vivian and Preston get to the hotel room, they find a beautiful woman shot dead. There's also a photograph - taken some time ago - of the woman being cozy with Vivian's (now deceased) husband George. Vivian realizes George was an unfaithful sleazeball, and she wonders if this is connected to his murder.

As things play out, Vivian sees Preston AGAIN shortly afterwards. Vivian receives a ticket to a movie premiere at the Liberty Theatre, which she assumes is for 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' starring her acquaintance Olivia De Haviland.

When Vivian gets to the theatre though, the only other person there is Preston Stone. And the movie turns out to be a homemade short in which two characters who look like Vivian and Preston are killed.

By now Vivian and Preston realize someone is threatening them, and they'd better figure out who and why before they end up dead. The twosome agree to investigate together, and both Vivian and Preston 'have skills' and 'know people'. Thus it's pretty clear Vivian is more than a clothing designer and Preston is more than a playboy.

There's plenty of action and suspense in this cozy thriller, including speeding cars, gunplay, abductions, and chicanery of various kinds. Add in a surprise climax, and the book is lots of fun.

I enjoyed this entertaining mystery, which is chock full of Hollywood celebrities from the classical era. Additional characters include cops, politicians, thugs and a sweet 160-pound Saint Bernard called Boris, who likes to swim.

At the end of the book author Gail Meath explains she's a big fan of Carole Lombard, and includes a mini-biography of the actress. Meath also notes the police and mayoral corruption depicted in the novel are based on real events, and she gives examples.

I'm looking forward to further exploits of Steele and Stone.

A Perilous Premiere is my first book by Gail Meath, but I plan to look at her other books, including the next in this new series. It is set' in the 1930's Las Angeles with many references to actors and others in the filming industry. Vivian Steele, an up-and-coming fashion designer and shop owner, is dealing with the murder of her husband and is searching for his killer. Preston Stone is a wealthy guy who used to date Vivian's sister, and she doesn't care for him, but he keeps showing up wherever she is. Eventually they decide to work together to see who is behind some strange events including them both. This story shows corruption, greed, murder, cheating, and many surprises in the interesting mystery with twists and turns that moved along a quick pace and kept my attention. I really enjoyed the relationship between Vivian and Preston and liked them. I can't wait to read the next book to see where their investigation may take them. Both of the two have a backstory not yet revealed and I hope to get answers in the next book. Mild language.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

Book two isn't out till October *pouts* :(

Least I don't have to wait for a year though.

This one was so much fun, got sucked into it from the very beginning by the third chapter I knew I was gonna finish it :).

The banter between Vivian and Preston (really hope they don't end up together, like them how they are right now) was great 😆 🤣.
Love how Vivian didn't back down and kept putting Preston in his place and how Preston was respectful even when he was frustrated with her.

The atmosphere was thick and electric, really felt like I was back in the 1930s strolling through the streets and other places in the novel.
It's really something when an author can effortlessly create an atmosphere that feels so alive without trying too hard.

Loved Carole Lombard in this also, she is a pistol I think the phrase is.. from what I've heard about her, would have loved to meet her and be her friend. (Love when I see strong friendships in novels!)

It's the perfect length and pace.. there's some parts where it slows down enough but you still feel the urgency in the air to get the mystery solved.

Would highly recommend and to make sure you carve out time for this one.. it didn't leave my head in between when I was reading it (cursed my head pain and brain lovelies for slowing my reading time 🙃).

1920s and 1930s are just fascinating to me... can't explain it fully but always love when I come across good ones :).

Books like this are why Historical fiction is my top favorite genre 😍 .

The title, Perilous Premiere, is perfect as is hints to a movie and with characters like Carole Lombard and Clark it seems fitting. Vivian moves to Hollywood for a fresh start. She opens a boutique and marries a banker. Life is looking up until her husband is killed in what looks like a random shooting. At the scene is a fellow by the name of Preston Stone. Vivian has a restless feeling that her husband's death was more sinister than a random shooting. As she investigates, she uncovers more secrets about her husband's life. The more she pokes around, she sets her life to be in grave danger. Preston is always showing up at every turn to her dismay. The friction and banter between these characters is worth the read as well as the mystery.

I enjoyed this cozy set in 1930's Hollywood. I read quite a few cozy series, mostly centered around food. The journey to the '30's was a nice departure. The pictures at the beginning of each chapter was a nice touch.

Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the copy, this did not influence my review of the book.

A Perilous Premiere by Gail Meath is a fast paced mystery that grabs your attention and doesn't let go in the short 200 pages that make up a very well structured and written book that primarily focuses its pages on explaining and solving the murders that have occurred in the story. Even though it is not a character driven book, there is potential and chemistry to be explored. I will definitely be waiting for the next book in this series to continue the adventures of our characters.This book is set in Hollywood 1930 and I can appreciate the research into the history and important landmarks of that time - all of which provided us with a very cosy historical fiction book.

This is the first in a brand new series set in the Golden Age of Hollywood, an era which I absolutely love.
Thrown together by murderous circumstances, Vivian Steele, owner of a fashion boutique and Preston Stone, a well known playboy, must work together to find a missing collection of valuable coins before they too become victims of a vicious killer. The problem is, Vivian hates the man for breaking her sister’s heart, and he has secrets to hide.
There is so much to love about this book. Vivian is a great character, but in a way quite mysterious. Daring and determined, loyal to her friends and she adores her dog, Bella. Preston is a man of secrets but also very protective, with a steely frame of mind and for me, rather suave and charismatic. They make a fabulous pairing and verbal sparring between them I could almost see sparks coming off the pages. I also loved how Vivian is best friends with the actress Carole Lombard so plenty of names such as Clark and Spencer had me smiling with pure joy. But this book also has plenty of action, drama and many suspicious characters. Set in the 1930’s, with the fantastic descriptions of places, I really felt as if I was there with Vivian and Preston.
A Perilous Premier really showcases Gail’s love of the era and her knowledge and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, especially as I have a few questions I’m looking forward to out the answers to. My only wish though is that at some point the pair meet up with my perfect man, Cary Grant.

As the biggest Jax Diamond fan I was thinking it would be impossible for a new series to impress me… I was wrong…

Gail has the ability to grab and pull you in from the very first page. You can’t stop reading and when the book ends, the best part is to see another book will follow soon.

I love everything about this book. So many twists and turns, every now and then a clue that there is more to come, more to be revealed…

I love how parts of history come to life in these books and the tidbits at the end are most enjoyable and make you want to know more of this specific era.

I am already falling in love with all the characters and can’t wait for their next adventure to start.

A definite must read!!

A superb start on a new series by Ms. Meath (author of the Jax Diamond historical mystery series).

This book is set in 1938 the cast of characters is superb as Hollywood stars Carole Lombard and Clark Gable are an integral part of the mystery.

The main protagonists are a Vivian and Preston. Vivian is now a widow after the shooting of her spouse. Preston appears to be a rich playboy but that may be just a facade…… the mystery is linked to Vivian's dead husband and is quite intriguing. The author's writing is deft and really depicts well the era and the people just come alive on the pages. The denouement was not what I expected…..

A GREAT read!

A Perilous Premiere is an absolute gem. This new duo of characters: Stone & Steele is highly entertaining. Clever, witty, humorous, full of mystery and intrigue. The author has written a captivating murder mystery in the 1930s Hollywood style. I enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend it. Bravo Gail!! I can’t wait to read book 2.

Fun and frothy and a solid murder mystery to boot!

A Perilous Premiere is the first book in author Gail Meath’s fun and frothy yet seriously solid mystery series, Stone & Steele Mysteries, and this name-dropper of a murder mystery sets a delightful tone for what’s to come. After fashion designer Vivian Steele’s husband, George Ramsey, is gunned down before her very eyes in an assumed robbery gone wrong, she naturally looks to the police for answers. However, they show no interest in trying to find the murderer after an initial, lame attempt, so she decides to call in old favors from people in her past to reignite the investigation. While her actions yield results, they don’t supply the answers she was looking for nor the revenge she craves, and before she can regroup, another murder occurs with evidence planted to make her look like the killer.

Vivian is a sweet and talented woman with a smart mind and an even smarter mouth. She berates herself emotionally for having been blissfully unaware when her husband’s true nature comes to light. Still, she’s compelled to bring his murderer to justice. She is joined by wealthy playboy Preston Stone who is investigating the case of an unbelievably valuable coin collection, and Vivian’s husband is one of the small number of possible suspects.

The plot is fast-paced as the pair, first separated and eventually as an unwilling team, follow up on the few clues they uncover during their investigation, some of which are lifted straight out of the crime scene before the police make an appearance. The case of theft and then murder is full of twists sprinkled with the sightings of celebrities from the early Golden Age of Hollywood. (Viv’s best friend is Carole Lombard!) The author packs in historical figures and events with those of a more fictional vintage, and the fun mingling of fact and fiction really makes the book a lot of fun. But along with the fun and froth, there is one heck of a good, complex tale of murder, mayhem, and misdirection.

I recommend A PERILOUS PREMIERE to readers of historical cozy mysteries, especially those who enjoy old movies and Hollywood history.

I know I said I would review this the day after I read it but sike! But hey at least I wrote it now?

Thank you to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the arc! This did not influence my review.

Basically, I was craving a cozy mystery some days ago and I saw this and immediately requested it because I needed a palette cleanser. So now I have to preface this by saying that I was NOT reading this to look for a literary masterpiece and while obviously not every book is perfect, I believe this book served its purpose perfectly.

The story follows the life of Vivian, a fashion boutique owner in 1930s LA. One day after the death of her husband, her life is thrown into chaos due to his past actions. After a chance encounter with Preston, the Hollywood rich kid and her sister’s ex, she is thrown into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. I liked the character of Vivian. She was interesting and had a very mysterious past. At some points, I thought she was a bit Mary-Sue because she seemed a bit too perfect but I ignored it because the pacing of the book was good and it didn’t get in the way of the interesting action. Preston is also mysterious and I liked the fact we still never quite figured him out. They make an interesting duo! I hope they continue to develop and we learn about their past in future books.

About the pacing; it was very good. The book is very short and can be read in a few hours. This is not a character driven book and rather, the main intrigue is the mystery. I enjoyed this aspect because that was what I was looking for. The simple diction was easy to follow. I do however think there could have been more complicated syntax because it would have elevated the experience a lot more. Some variety would definitely help this book since it's so short. I enjoyed the ending as well, I think it was built into the plot very well.

I had more to say but I forgot what because it’s been too long. I will end this here then. Will definitely be on the lookout for more of this series.

On a note about Goodreads, any chance it can be changed to “A Perilous Premier” instead of “A PERILOUS PREMIER:”? I think it would looks like it hasn’t been edited properly.

In author Gail Meath’s “A Perilous Premier,” we are transported back to the late 1930s to Hollywood Land, where now-famous actors and actresses were filming such excellent movies that they have continued to delight and entertain viewers in the twenty-first century.

The storyline is tight and moves along at a good pace. There are no romance vibes whatsoever, and I’d be gracious in saying that the two main characters go from enemies to almost friends! Bodies and crimes are piling up as Stone and Steele reluctantly work together to ascertain who’s guilty and who isn’t, and the pool of suspects just keeps getting deeper and deeper.

“A Perilous Premier” is author Gail Meath's first book in her new Stone and Steele cozy murder mystery series. Preston Stone and Vivian Steele are more than what meets the eye. They both come into the story with backgrounds that aren’t revealed in this first book, making this reader anxious for more of the series to learn “just who are you anyway?”

I was given a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a fun read!! Instantly engaging, and I enjoyed the characters right off the bat. Read it all in one day! As the owner of 4 dogs and 2 cats, all with very distinct personalities, I love how the pets were included in the story and would love to see more happy endings for pets! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading other books by Gail Meath, and anticipating the rest in this series!

Everyone has a hidden background and most have a hidden agenda as well in this character driven story. It moves along quite well with a few hiccups here and there, but that didn't interfere with my enjoyment or keep me from wanting to finish it after I went to bed. The Special Note at the end includes historical facts, mini bios of the historical characters in the story, music clips, and appropriate old film clips. I'm really looking forward to the promised next two books in series!

This is a first for me with this author so I went in blind.
This is the first book on the Stone and Steele series, Vivian and Preston being the leads.
The book was well written and well researched. The inclusion of real life characters like Carol Lombard and Clark Gable was surprising but very well appreciated.
Well paced and intriguing, kept me very interested and wanting to know how the story develops.
There are obvious loose ends, like we don't know who Vivian and her sister really are, neither do we know what Preston is up to apart from coming from a wealthy family. But this is to be expected.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, I am hoping that the relationship between Preston and Vivian grows into something more intimate and I'm looking forward to the 2nd book.

I received an Advanced Copy of this book and I'm offering an open and honest review, which was my pleasure to give.

A Perilous Premiere by Gail Meath, the first book in the Stone & Steel Mysteries, is a thrilling read for fans of historical mysteries, suspense, and detective novels. The book depicts two sides of life in California in the late 1930s. Glamorous facades often hide corruption, dishonesty, evil intentions, and even lust for murder. Vivian Steele loses her husband, George, during a shooting incident in a store. Vivian, a fashion designer and a boutique owner, starts her investigation and helps the police catch George's possible killer. Yet Vivian is not content and suspects the police arrested the wrong person.

An unknown woman asks Vivian to meet her in a hotel suite. Arriving, she encounters Preston Stone, her adversary and a Hollywood socialite, who has also been invited. They find a murdered young actress, and Vivian sees a photo that shakes her to the core. George's secrets now threaten to destroy Vivian's life. Vivian and Preston must join forces to find a killer who plays wicked games with them both.

Gail Meath's A Perilous Premiere is a skillfully built mystery with multiple layers. It is a pleasure to uncover them and explore the characters. Vivian is bright, strong-willed, and determined to get justice. A puzzling enigma surrounds Vivian, and her best friend is none other than the great Carole Lombard! Vivian has a superpower akin to a photographic memory, which makes her character unforgettable. Preston's sarcastic attitude masks a brave and gentle heart. They are a dynamic team that is always ready for another witty exchange.

The artfully written dialogue is one of the most appealing aspects of this book. Gail's expressive writing style finely conveys the emotional intensity of the narrative. The outstanding editorial work gives us an amazing read. The narrative is very well-paced, every chapter is straight to the point, and the plot's culmination is breathtaking. While this is an entertaining mystery, the author includes a substantive theme of trust. I cannot wait for Vivian and Preston's next adventure.

This is the first book in a brilliant new series - The Stone & Steele Mysteries - and having read a few books from the Jax Diamond Mysteries, also by this author, I was really excited to see how this would compare.

This series is set in the wildly exciting and glamorous Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930's.
Stone being a fashion boutique owner in the area, knows lots of the stars of the time and this really felt so easy to get sucked into and enjoy just for that.
But when her husband is murdered and she's thrown together with playboy Steele to investigate.

I loved this pairing!
Although they seemingly hated each other due to previous events, they actually work so well together.
The banter, more like bickering just had me laughing throughout.
I feel as though we've only touched on the surface of both characters and there will be lots more to explore as the series develops.

As ever, the author's beautifully descriptive writing had me immersed from the start and I loved the settings and outfits which felt so decadent and transported me to this era so perfectly.

The storyline was packed with action and with lots going on, I raced through the pages in no time.
I'm already looking forward to the next book and can't wait to see what awaits our dynamic duo.

Set in The Golden Age of Hollywood, 1938, Vivian Steele has a successful fashion boutique in LA, is friends with Carole Lombard, and has an adorable Boston Terrier named Bella. At the start of the story her banker husband is murdered and she spends the next six months to tracking down his murderer, but finds out she's been following the wrong villain. In the process she is lured to a hotel room where she finds her sister's ex, Preston Stone, along with the dead body of her husband's mistress. From there she is thrown into a much larger mystery and must race against the clock and learn to work with Preston to solve multiple murders.

I loved this story! The characters are great and I love that her best friend is Carole Lombard. I truly appreciated getting chapters from both Vivian's and Preston's point of view, which really helped me get on board with Preston pretty quickly. I cannot wait to continue in this series as we will inevitably learn more about Vivian's previous life and who Preston is really working for. I was so invested in her business and her friends and the mystery was very engaging and fun to follow. Oh, and I can't wait to get to see more of Boris, the Saint Bernard!

Thank you NetGalley and the author, Gail Meath, for a free copy of this eARC in return for an honest review.

A Perilous Premiere is set in Hollywood in 1938. Vivian Steele is a fashion designer with her own boutique. When her husband is shot on the street, her life changes unimaginably. She discovers he was keeping secrets, and she is thrown together with Hollywood playboy Preston Stone. Suddenly they are both in danger and racing to solve the mystery.

I wanted to read this book because I love cozy mysteries, enjoy historical mysteries, and am a big fan of classic movies and old time Hollywood.

This was a delightful start to a new series! Vivian is a fresh, smart protagonist. I love her back and forth with Preston and especially enjoyed their scenes together.

The classic Hollywood references - both places and people - are delightful. Vivian is good friends with Carole Lombard, who plays a part in the story. She also has a lovable Boston Terrier and there is a Saint Bernard in the book as well.

I loved that the chapters had descriptive titles and even pictures that helped set the scene! This is unique and added to my enjoyment of the book.

As a mystery, A Perilous Premiere is fast paced with some twists and surprises along the way.

I enthusiastically recommend this book for fans of cozy mysteries, and especially for readers who enjoy old time Hollywood.

I love the Jax Diamond series, hits right in my sweet spot. I was a little skeptical Ms. Meath could pull off a second series at that level. If the rest of this series is anything like the Premiere, she will have done it. This is a very good mystery. I have so many questions. Our leading lady, Vivian, is the owner, designer, and chief tailor of a couture salon catering to Hollywood's elite. But there is more to her than meets the eye. Who is she really? Preston Stone, her erstwhile partner, can't find any background on her before she turned up in Hollywood. Speaking of Preston, does he work for the government, or is he a PI? Hopefully we will get some answers in the follow up books in the series. Take these mysterious detectives and throw them into a search for a valuable coin collection and watch the bodies drop along the way. Oh! There's also a twist at the end that caught me completely by surprize. Excellent debut book and I can't wait for more.

This was an absolutely amazing start to a new series! I have been a fan of Gail Meath since finding her Jax Diamond series and I was excited when I learned about "A Perilous Premiere." As always, the mystery was well-crafted and had me on the edge of my seat. I feel like the last few mysteries I've read the story seems to drag on longer than necessary. I never feel that way with Ms. Meath's stories.

And although they're not Jax and Laura, Preston and Vivian are just as fun and interesting. I can't wait to see how their acquaintance-ship (I feel like they aren't quite friends yet) progresses. I also hope we get to learn more about Vivian's past and Preston's job in the next book. I've already pre-ordered it!

My review of the book Perilous Premiere.
Rating: 5, excellent.
I was asked by the author to be an ARC for this book. My review is unbias.
Moving from the east to Los Angeles during the Golden Era of Hollywood. Vivian is looking to start a new life.
Little did she know, her late husband wasn't the man she thought he was.
Opening a boutique for her dress designs, she becomes good friends with Carol Lombard, yes that Carol Lombard, and of course Clare Gable.
Vivian discovers her former husband has stolen a collection of valuable coins, and unknown to her, hid them in one of her processions. Leaving her in danger from thugs.
This is a fun read. Ms.Meath does her homework well. Facts from the Old Hollywood are shared.
I can't wait to see where this new investigation team takes

I really really loved this one too! It was very intriguing and I loved seeing everything unfold. The concept was very interesting and the fact that the writer connected it with real people who existed at one point in time makes this even more fascinating!

I was hooked when I read the blurb at first, and as I read further into the book, it just kept pulling me further down in the mystery. I truly felt like I was a part of the actual mystery! I can also sense a few things brewing and I would love to read more from this author to know what happens next!

Fiction based on true tidbits

This new series by Gail Meath drops you right into the golden age of the movies among stars like Carole Lomdard and Clark Gable and our heroine, Vivian Steele, fits right in with an air of mystery surrounding her, a cheating dead husband was also a thief and off the charts chemistry with Preston Stone, a wealthy man with more than his own share of secrets. Action packed and highly entertaining this one kept me guessing until the very end. Well done!

This is the first book in the new Stone & Steele Mysteries series, set in the Hollywood/Los Angeles area in October of 1937. Vivian Stone is the primary protagonist, a widow and fashion designer whose husband was murdered. She owns a shop and has some interesting folks as her clients, including her best friend, one Carole Lombard, of acting fame. Preston Steele is the other protagonist who comes on the scene a little later in the book. Vivian knows him and doesn’t like him. For his part, Preston is interested in something that Vivian might have but doesn’t know she has. I don’t want to say too much about the plot, for fear of giving away too much. There are some good twists and turns in the story and there is enough action to hold the reader’s attention.

This first book focuses a lot on story and not as much as I would like on character development. Vivian in particular remains a mystery, and we don’t learn a whole lot more about Preston other than he comes from a wealthy family. There also was a repetitive use of the word "yet" in the advance copy that I read, but Ms. Meath has since changed that.

Aside from this issue (for me), I enjoyed the story. The book is well written and well edited. There is no romance at all (maybe some flirting) and no bad language for those who prefer to avoid such. It is complete, no cliffhangers, and the story comes to a believable and satisfying conclusion. I love the way the author weaves in real Hollywood people like Ms. Lombard (who died far too young IMHO), her beau at the time Clark Gable, and other notables. Be sure to read Ms. Meath’s notes at the end of the book. She explains how several of the non-Hollywood characters are real people and how she has used their stories in this book.

Overall, it’s a good first book in the series and I think this will be an interesting series!

I received an advance review copy of A Perilous Premiere for free. I leave this review voluntarily and with pleasure.

I'm already a huge fan of Gail's and love her Jax Diamond series (which, if you haven't read, you absolutely should)
I wasn't worried about a new series, however, and I was right not to be. I don't think there is a better writer of this era of America.
Set in the 1930s, Vivian and Preston are thrown together to try and discover where some missing coins are before any more people lose their lives.
For a mystery, this one is cool and a bit different. Vivian runs a clothes boutique, and this is used in a brilliant way.
The way the criminal leaves messages and plays Vivian and Preston is genius. I loved following along and not guessing at any point who was behind it.
I love Vivian and can't wait to find out more about her. She has a dog that she adores, is clearly loved by all that meet her. Her interactions with customers in her shop prove exactly why. There are hints to a mysterious past, and unusually for a woman of that era, she's pretty kick arse.
Preston, despite being a slimy sneaky reporter, is actually quite sweet, and I was rooting for him, too.
All peripheral characters were great, and I couldn't stop reading as the book progressed. I can't wait for book 2.

Review:

A Perilous Premiere by Gail Meath
The first book in the Stone & Steel Mysteries
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is an entertaining read for fans of historical mysteries, suspense, and detective novels.
𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬:
Vivian Steele loses her husband, George, during a shooting incident in a store. Vivian, a fashion designer and a boutique owner, starts her investigation and helps the police catch George’s possible killer. Yet Vivian is not content and suspects the police arrested the wrong person. An unknown woman asks Vivian to meet her in a hotel suite. Arriving, she encounters Preston Stone, her adversary and a Hollywood socialite, who has also been invited. They find a murdered young actress, and Vivian sees a photo that shakes her to the core. George’s secrets now threaten to destroy Vivian’s life. Vivian and Preston must join forces to find a killer who plays wicked games with them both.
…………………………………………………..
This is not a character driven book, it focuses on the mystery and solving the murders, I quite enjoyed reading a book written this way as it was a refreshing change for me. This is a short book at just over 200 pages and can be read fairly quickly. I will certainly keep my eye out for the next books in this series as they are different from what I would normally read.
Thank you to #netgalley for the ARC copy
