A dream job has catastrophic consequences in this scorching, edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense by Amazon bestselling author, Gemma Ford.
This was supposed to be Ellie's dream job, but nothing is going according to plan. First, she's nearly taken out by a human bulldozer who thinks she's an eco-terrorist, and then the data she's analyzing doesn't add up. Something strange is going on, and she's determined to figure out what it is.
When a ferocious storm hits the oil rig, and she's nearly killed in a freak "accident", the bulldozer—former Navy SEAL, Phoenix—comes to her rescue. The man's a total mystery, and one she knows she must not attempt to decipher, especially given her history with dangerous men. The only problem is, she can't seem to help herself.
Phoenix is fresh out of options—he needs this assignment to get his life back on track. What he doesn't expect is to be blindsided by Ellie, a whip-smart, yoga-practicing hellcat who turns his world upside down. As the danger on the rig escalates, Phoenix realizes that Ellie is in the crosshairs, and he'll do whatever it takes to protect her—even if it means putting his own life on the line.
When disaster strikes and they find themselves stranded on a remote island, he's got to use his SEAL training and experience to keep them alive. With a team of mercenaries hunting them down and time running out, they have to work together if they want to survive long enough to unravel the dark conspiracy that put them in this deadly situation.
As they fight for their lives, the heat between them reaches boiling point, forging an unbreakable bond that might just be the key to their survival—and their happiness.
*This is a heart-pounding, romantic suspense novel with some steamy scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
In this latest addition to the series, the author delivers another engaging and edge of your seat story about another member of Blackthorn Security that finds love when they least expected. Former Navy SEAL, Phoenix, still carries the guilt of the loss of team members and friends during the last mission that ended his career. His current assignment is as security on an oil rig in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Ellie, a chemical engineer, is looking forward to working as the lead in this project of analyzing the samples of the soil and confirming the availability of oil below the rig. These two meet when while patrolling the rig, Phoenix jumps on her because he believes she’s an eco-terrorist. After the misunderstanding are cleared up , their attraction blossoms. But as Ellie continues to study the samples she realizes something is very wrong. There is no oil where the rig is located. While trying to dig deeper, the danger surrounding them increases. Will Ellie be able to confirm her suspicions? Will Phoenix survive the danger and help her through it as well as finding the person and the why of the lies being spread? With an engaging plot and likable characters that are perfect in their imperfections, the author grabs one’s attention front the first page to the last. She also reminds us that our past experiences do in fact affect our present as well as our perception of the future. This is a story about courage, fighting for the right and having second chances in life and love. A book worth your time. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Gemma Ford has written another exciting story to add to her Blackthorn Security series. This book was more of a slow burn than the first entry, “Duty Bound,” but it managed to keep my interest nonetheless. Ellie and Phoenix were a great couple and I enjoyed watching them navigate their way to their happily ever after. The action in this book didn’t really heat up until almost halfway through, but there was still a lot going on. I thought it was risky that the author decided to set the first part of the story on an oil rig — not the most conventional choice. It’s such a confined location. And yet it worked really well. Phoenix was a bit frustrating with his “she doesn’t deserve me/I’m never letting her go” back and forth, but he more than made up for it with his protectiveness. My only real complaint is that we never learn what his real name is! Maybe the author will give us a quick bonus scene? I recommend this one and am looking forward to the next in the series. Bring on Viper, please!
Wow! This was an amazing story. Phoenix and Ellie were the best!
When Ellie gets a job on an oil rig, she finds something major doesn't add up but it's with the help of Blackthorn Security guy, Phoenix that she starts to work it out.
Phoenix and Ellie had that something special. Together they connected and had a chemistry that was hard to deny, although Phoenix certainly tried his hardest to deny. There was a heated tension between them both from the start that plays a nice part in the story.
Loads of action, danger and suspense along with a mystery makes this a must read. But it's the romance that I enjoyed very much.
An easy read, well written with a fast paced plot and truly likeable characters, I was pulled in from the start.
After a contentious first meeting, due to echoes of their separate pasts, engineer Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Rider and security operative, Phoenix ignore their mutual attraction and settle into a tenuous friendship, Ellie even shares discrepancies in her findings during one of their talks. Shortly afterward, Ellie is nearly tossed overboard during a storm. Phoenix wonders who, if and why someone would target Ellie.
A call to a friend gives Ellie a different data log. Lily double checks both sets of data on a nearby sister rig on her way back to her assigned rig, Ellie see’s someone speeding away as her assigned rig blows up! Scooping Phoenix from the water they shelter on an island but soon find themselves pursued by armed gunmen. Rating: 4stars
Phoenix is the security on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and Ellie is the Chemical Engineer, their first meet is not so pleasant but after a couple of weeks, and in close proximity, the sparks start to fly. When Ellie finds an anomaly and an attempt is made on her life, Phoenix vows to stay close and protect her….but danger is closer than they thought and the two have to survive the Gulf to be able to have a future. A great read with suspense, steam and great characters. I liked these two, no drama between them and Ellie who is strong and resilient and Phoenix who does whatever it takes to protect Ellie. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I should DNF this, but I'll carry on skimming to the end. Corny dialogue; cliches; simplistic writing. After 2 years on a North Seas oil rig, one would think Ellie had enough experience to know she should not go topside in the middle of a storm! "I thought I could help." "How was it that she barely knew Phoenix (2 days!), but when she was with him, it felt more real and right than anyone she'd been with before." Now she's in a water craft, alone, on the way to another oil rig, without any radio or communications device. The author just stretches all credibility.
I enjoyed the main characters. The setting was something I've always seen out in the pacific ocean and thought wow that could be dangerous and this book proves it. The 2 main characters has issues each of them had together and through the story in this book the author made it happen. It had a good conclusion I had figured out 1 of the bad people Right off right off the start. But getting to the end of the But getting to the end of the story now it all tied together the author made this Book worth a read
The book was okay, really. However, in my view the characters had no depth, the plot development was lightweight with all the answers handed to the reader on a plate. Supporting characters were one dimensional. There were no details like the characters' real names, surnames, ages and familial ties were missing. There was so much information about Race and what he did to Ellie that I thought he would make an appearance at some point, but no. Like I said, it was an okay read but no edge-of-your-seat stuff.
Ellie dream job isn't going as it should go. She nearly taken out a human bulldozer that is former Navy Seal Phoenix comes to her rescue. They seem to have a connection but he is fighting it. He realized something isn't right. Accidents keep happening around her and he is determined to keep her safe. She knows that that is wrong place to be drilling and trying to find out what to do
This book felt quite amateurish to me. Grammar mistakes throughout. Plot wasn’t developed. And the insane amount of inner dialogue about not being good enough was repetitive. And redundant. Not to mention things didn’t add up. Like how would they assume Ellie was targeted just from a faulty railing that anybody could have leaned on. I wasn’t a fan of Phoenix as he got too hung up on the ghosts of his past, but that was never fully resolved.
I always love a book that keeps me interested and the pace doesn't slow down. Their on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean and someone is setting it up to fail. Ellie is an engineer and found some disturbing news and Phoenix is ex military and a guard on the rig. Things get pretty rough and everything happens at once. Danger, heat and betrayals. HEA.
Ellie was hired to fail, or at least not find out what is really going on. when she does notice a problem, she suddenly becomes expendable. Luckily she met Phoenix and his coworkers, ex Seals who do their best to protect her and bring down the culprits when the oil rig is blown up. An engaging read.
I liked the setting, the characters were good, solid action and danger, the twist was predictable but that’s okay. The inner monologues killed it for me - so damn repetitive. The exclamation marks. The sex was also a little over dramatic.
What a ride! I could almost feel the breeze of the ocean and the salty of the sea. Love the story, the fight for survival and how they both connected under the most daring circumstances. Can't wait to read the next one.
Loved the book. It moved so fast, the action was on point. This was a true standalone with the others being very minor characters. Romance was good moved at a good pace for the characters. Felt right there with them.
This is the second action packed book in the Blackthorn Security series. It draws you in from the start and keeps your attention throughout the action packed story. Former Navy Seal, Phoenix, takes a security job on an oil rig. He meets Ellie, a physicist working on the rig and the two have an instant connection. Unfortunately, Ellie discovers something isn't right with her tests results on the rig, and not wanting this come to light, she is targeted. It goes from bad to worse, when she finds herself and Phoenix in a fight for their lives. He will protect her at any cost. I cannot wait for the next one. I received a free copy of the book for my ARC review.
