Flesh & Bone

She can't remember. He can't forget.

Eva Baumann is invisible. Sebastian Weiss is famous. In a perfect world Eva would be fearless and Sebastian would be guiltless.
It's not a perfect world.

Singer songwriter Eva Baumann has a celebrity crush on Sebastian Weiss. He’s perfect to love because there was no way they could ever be a thing. She’s a nobody. He’s a heart throb. Hiding an infatuation is easy for her because, since her accident, hiding is what she did best.

Sebastian Weiss’s band climbed the charts, seemingly overnight, and he’s finally living the dream. All he has to do is write enough songs to produce a second album. The bad news is he hasn’t written a new song in over a year.

Sebastian stumbles into the Blue Note Pub in time to hear Eva Baumann perform a hauntingly beautiful song. Could this girl be the answer to defeating his writer’s block?

Eva and Sebastian begin a complicated writing relationship that leads to more. But Sebastian has a secret that will devastate them both.

**Includes MP3 links to four original songs produced by Norm Strauss and performed by Canadian music artists Trisha Robins and Bryan Steeksma.

Five years ago Eva was in an accident that left her leg crippled. Ever since she has been working on music and the nerve to sing in front of people at the Blue Note. She doesn't like being the center of attention for fear people will see her handicap and not hear her music. But one day she finally does it and her life is forever changed (again). She meets Sebastian Weiss and a friendship forms. Soon stronger feelings come between them and a relationship is born. Will a secret from Sebastian's past destroy everything they worked so hard at? Will Eva be able to let go of her past and move on from it? With so much riding against them, these two will have to fight for what they want. But it won't be easy. Is anything worth having ever easy?

This book was just so sweet and so beautiful. I think I have found a new sub-genre that appeals to me: people with handicaps. Sounds weird when I say it like that but it is true. This is the 2nd book I've read in the past couple weeks where one of the characters is not perfect. And that makes the character more real to me. I can see where a lot of people will be able to connect to them. But don't get me wrong. Even though the character has a disability that leaves her with a cane...she is by no means weak. Eva is definitely a strong willed girl with a great head on her shoulders. I loved her so.

I adored the heck out of these characters and the story they told. I remembered Sebastian from SUN & MOON but thought of him as kind of flighty then. This time around he has grown up some and I just loved him. He has a huge heart and loves with every bit of it. Eva is a sweetheart that has a bunch of issues she has had to work through over the years. I love the person that Sebastian brings out in her though. He really awoken her spirit that was asleep deep within her. Together they are wonderful couple. Apart they are miserable.

The story was simply fabulous and I smiled most of the way through. I just couldn't help myself. Strauss did an excellent job writing this one…giving us a fairy tale romance of sorts and telling a story that was fresh and different. I look forward to the next book in the series, HEART & SOUL. Knowing Strauss, it will be just as excellent as this one. 5 Adoring Stars!

I am loving this series! This book is so different than the first book. We meet Sebastian Weiss in Sun and Moon but he has a girlfriend, Yvonne. Now he’s a rock star and has fans surrounding him wherever he goes. His life looks pretty great, but it’s actually not. He and Yvonne have recently broken up and he’s devastated. He’s not close to his parents because he didn’t take the career route they would have chosen for him. His band is on the verge of breaking up.

Eva Baumann is handicapped from a hit-and-run accident five years ago. She walks with a cane and feels like her sister, Gabriele, is living the life she wants. Her parents keep a tight rein on her but she’s okay with it because she doesn’t want to venture out much, anyway. She wants to sing at the Blue Note Pub but keeps chickening out.

One night, Eva becomes brave and sings. Sebastian is there that night so they finally cross paths. Eva has a hard time believing Sebastian might possibly be interested in her. Sebastian helps her come out of her shell and she starts to live again and it feels great!

There’s a major twist in the story as Sebastian’s been keeping a secret that comes to light. It’s devastating to them both and their love just might not survive. This is a story of forgiveness and second chances and making the most of your life under less than ideal circumstances.

I love Eva and Sebastian and the part that music plays in this series. Their relationship made me smile as I saw how he looked past her physical handicap to see who she really was and she looked past his rock star status to see who he really was. My heart broke for them when Sebastian’s secret was revealed and I had to cling to the promise that this is a Happily Ever After (HEA) book. I highly recommend this book and this series and am looking forward to the next one!

Content: There is talk of sex and characters sleeping together but there are no details. There is also some kissing. I consider this to be clean.

The writing in this series is so great - it just sweeps you away to Germany and places you into the lives of these two young music lovers. Eva is hurting - suffering the scars (and pain) of an accident that made her feel more like an old woman in a college student. Sebastian is a star in the German music rock scene, but he's got some demons of his own. When the unlikely couple comes together - they make each other better. Until they open up the scars and all of the hurt comes pouring out.
Told in alternating points of view, you really get a feel for both Eva and Sebastian and what they're thinking and feeling. But Strauss handles it seamlessly. I really love her writing.
This would have been 5 stars for me, but I felt the ending happened a little quickly. Even still, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's the first in a long time that has kept me up reading later than I should have! If you're a fan of the HEA ending, pick this book up. You won't be sorry.
I haven't listened to the music, but I'd love to hear the songs. I love the idea of combining books and music.

Lee Strauss has written yet another beautiful story in the Minstrel Series. Get ready to be whisked away to Germany as you follow Eva, a sweet, shy girl whose life has become defined by the accident she survived five years ago, and Sebastian, a successful singer living the dream--or so it appears.

There are many things I loved about Eva and Sebastian's story: a country I've never been to, the sweet, unlikely romance, the themes of overcoming fear and learning to forgive, and the music. The MUSIC! The songs are real, and what better way to enjoy this book than by listening to Eva and Sebastian's songs while reading their story? I suggest you click to the end of the book, follow the links to the songs, download them, then go back to the beginning and start reading :-)

What I loved about this book: I admit it, I'm a sucker for books about fame. I love to see how different characters (and people) handle fame, and how they balance the limelight with their personal lives. So I was particularly attracted to Sebastian, and later Eva, when she was being brought into his world. Another wonderful thing about this book (and their companion novels) is the music that goes along with it. I've always loved the idea of joining the arts and creating new combinations of expression. I love the idea of music and literature (especially in a book about a musician!) that Lee Strauss has come up with.

Not for me

I didn't connect with this book. I didn't care for the characters or the storyline. It could be me or it could be the book.

Sebastian Weiss is a rock star with all of his dreams coming true. On the outside it looks like everything is going his way. But on the inside he hasn’t been able to write new music for months, he’s been estranged from his parents for 6 years, his best friend of 11 years (and fellow band member) acts like he can’t stand him anymore, and his girlfriend of 6 years has just betrayed him. He’s in a pretty dark place when he finds himself walking into Blue Note Pub…

When she was 15 years old, Eva Baumann was a victim of a hit-and-run accident that almost killed her and left her physically handicapped. She has scars that will never heal and she has to walk with a cane. Five years later, the emotional scars haven’t healed either. It doesn’t help that she is watching her beautiful sister, Gabriele, live a fairy tale life. Eva knows that the first step out of her emotional pit is to start facing some of her fears, and the first fear she plans to overcome is the fear of playing her guitar and singing for a crowd. She brings her best friend Annette with her so she can’t chicken out and finally finds herself performing at the Blue Note Pub…

Eva has a huge celebrity crush on Sebastian Weiss; in her wildest dreams she wouldn’t have imagined him being at the Blue Note Pub that night – and she definitely wouldn’t have imagined him falling in love with her song – and she never would have imagined that he would come over to her table to praise her.

This story of Sebastian and Eva is incredible and inspiring! Eva believes that humans are made of more than flesh and bone, and that there must be something beyond her handicap. Sebastian makes her feel she can be accepted the way she is, and helps her rediscover confidence, courage and passion. Everyone wants her to be careful because of her handicap, but she’s tired of being careful. Eva makes Sebastian want to dig deeper creatively and to grow as a person.

But Sebastian is keeping a secret… a secret that is sure to destroy their future happiness.

Eva learns that someone can do something bad – or even some bad things – and still be a good person. And forgiveness is a gift we all need to receive, and a gift we all need to give. And when we give forgiveness, it’s actually a gift to ourselves!

And maybe when something bad happens to us, it gives us something greater in return. And when we can find that gift, then we can be thankful for even the bad things in our life!

Content: I would consider this steamy clean - there is some language and some talk of sex and characters who sleep together, but there are no details given.

Note: I received this book for free through Goodreads Firstreads.

Although this book was a good idea for a story it fell flat for me. There was just so much that the author was trying to make happen and go over in this book that it just felt rushed and incomplete in places. One example of that is when the female lead makes a decision to go to college after five years out of high school (even though she's only 20) and the story starts to go into that but then it stops with that train of thought and continues back into the main storyline of the love story between the male and female lead. There was also lack of details or research into the details included in the story. An example of this was that supposedly the male lead had only been trying to make his music/band career work and yet the author is trying to pass him off as this super popular and well known rock star. After just a year, even if it was a very successful year, he still wouldn't be recognizable to everyone like he supposedly in this book. Another detail that was confusing was that at times the female lead's sister was a great friend and supportive family member and sometimes the sister was this villainous character that was always out to get the female lead. Something that bothered me about the story was that it is advertised as an adult novel but the attitude, the writing, and the story feel more like a younger teen novel. The female lead constantly bemoans her lot in life and refuses to live her life like a normal person and move on from her life even though it has been five years since the accident. She just seems to blame the world for her problems instead of dealing with it like an adult should. The female lead is also a bit of a tease with her boyfriend. I know the author is trying to have the female lead stay true to her values and she's does for the most part. Unless things are going to get steamy with her boyfriend, then she allows him to touch a little bit before pulling back and cutting everything off. Her commitment to her values was sketchy mossy of the time and just made her seem inconsistent and wishy washy. Although I gave this book 2 stars or rated it as okay, I wouldn't read anything more by this author because she really needed to work on her plots and her writing.

I really couldn't put this one down. Ms. Strauss has a way of writing that really pulls you into the character's lives.

Eva Baumann was in an accident five years ago that has left her crippled. All the dreams she once had are shattered and she feels like her sister is living the life she once thought would be hers. Her parents are overprotective, but Eva rarely ventures out as it is, so that seems okay for the moment. Then, she finally gets up the nerve to sing one of her songs at The Blue Note and her life takes another turn.

Sebastian Weiss is living the dream he thought he wanted---he's a rock star with all the fame that comes along with it. But his life isn't how it seems on the outside. All of his relationships are suffering and he hasn't been able to write in months. When he wanders into The Blue Note, he's completely drawn to Eva and her song. She can't believe he'd ever be interested in someone like her, and see beyond her disability. He can't believe he's found someone like her.

It is such a beautiful love story that has a lot of ups and downs. There were a couple of times, though, where I wondered if this couple would be able to overcome everything that was thrown at them. Sebastian has a pretty big secret that was tough to watch them go through once it was revealed. Ms. Strauss is an expert at drawing on human weakness and emotion and figuring that into the relationship. It seemed very realistic and truly swept me away. A story I didn't want to put down.

Eva Baumann was a normal teenage girl until one moment changed her entire life. Now going through day to day with no spark, always wondering what could have been, is starting to wear on her.

Sebastian Weiss always knew he didn't want to follow in his parents footsteps but he didn't know it would cost him his entire family. After years on his own trying to get his big break, the work has finally paid off. Sebastian Weiss is now the lead singer for the up and coming Hollow Fellows.

When these two soul collide will it be the end of the loneliness they both feel? Can they help one another heal and move on from the past?

Lee Strauss has done it again! Flesh and Bone, the second book in the Minstrel Series, is fantastic. With deep rooted secrets and fears, the plot is suspenseful and the HEA is wonderful. Lee's characters - Eva and Sebastian - are once again written to the point where you feel as though you know both of them and the things they keep bottled inside. The setting - Germany - is beautifully depicted and mentions of new places have been add to this book.

Flesh and Bone is about forgiveness, redemption, and love - the love of yourself and the love of another.

Flesh and Bone is a fantastic read worthy of 5 stars! I can't wait for book three in this series.

This is the second book in the Minstrel series, and honestly I liked it much better than the first! This book put a smile on my face more than once, and everything that I had been disappointed about in the first book has been greatly improved in this one.

There are similar themes between Flesh & Bone and it's predecessor Sun & Moon, namely how they both focus on women who have specific challenges and pitfalls to overcome. In Sun & Moon, Katja was a poor aspiring singer-songwriter who had run away from her family. In Flesh & Bone, Eva is a handicapped victim of a hit-and-run accident who feels constantly overcome by fear and self-doubt.

I really liked the characters in Flesh & Bone. Eva and Sebastian, our two narrators, have real problems and realistic motives and are enjoyable to follow. And the minor characters also seem solid and realistic (I was excited by that since the minor characters in Sun & Moon seemed too flat).

This is a quick romantic read that does have it's cheesy moments, but underneath that there's a deeper story about forgiveness and being confident in oneself.

I will read anything Lee Strauss writes. This book was pure magic and full of feels and amazing things. I picked this book up at 11 in the morning and finished it at 9 at night. Lee Strauss is fantastic at writing books I just want to curl up with for a whole day and read. This series especially is brilliant.

I love how we're following familiar characters, but you don't need to read the books in order to understand them. I also love that this series takes place in Germany; it's so cool to experience something completely different from what I'm used to reading.

Sebastien and Eva were so beautiful and I loved getting to read their story. I'm so happy with how we left them, even though I also would've loved to see more!

I definitely recommend this series to anyone who's looking for a great, one-sitting read. These books are so fast paced, fun and cute. Definitely worth the read.

Overall, I really loved this book and can't wait to continue on with the series sometime in the future! I also can't wait to read more from Lee!

3.5 stars rounding up

I love the whole music vibe going on in this book and series. Love the setting in Germany. This story had so many great messages going on- betrayal, forgiveness, redemption, overcoming adversity, and of course, love.

The characters struggles felt real. I felt connected to both the characters and the story. I did really love this story I just wish I could take out the swearing. That's always my biggest gripe. And while the main characters didn't have sex, there are other sexual relationships spoken of.

Content: swearing, profanity, sexual innuendo

I think I almost liked this better than the first one, although Katja and Micah's story will always have a special place in my heart. I loved how real Eva was and how she navigated life in her own way not despite her disability but because of it. I did guess the major twist between the two lead characters but only a page ahead of when it was revealed, and the ramifications of that still shocked me in the best way. Such a good romance!

Beautiful Story

At first I didn't like Sebastian much, and then I didn't care for Eva for a while, but together? I loved them. Because love isn't perfect. It's real. It's messy. And this book is a beautiful, realistic love story.

The story was impeccably written and the themes were very bold, love, family, forgiveness, trust and redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed this book along with the musical theme. I cried and I laughed.

Good love story

I won't spoil it and tell you anything about the book, except to say it was a good love story. A few unexpected twists and turns that made it deeper than I thought t would be, but also made it better.
