If you don't know any music theory, this is a very good place to start. It covers the basic stuff (notation, intervals, scales, circle of fifths), while the chords/harmony is left for Book 2. The exercises sold me – they are not that much, but just enough to make you remember the stuff, once you've solved them. Frankly, I wouldn't mind a book only containing exercises. Haven't found one yet, though.
