Party in the woods
The story takes place in Ireland and revolves around a family drama. At first, I found the idea of the story very interesting, but it became quite slow in the first half. The themes of trust and belief are important in this book.
I was curious about who killed Declan and why everyone seemed so nice all the time and continuing on as if nothing happened. However, the plot didn't live up to its potential. Even though the premise caught my attention at the beginning, the book didn't meet my expectations as the story progressed. Aside from the main character Lizzie, the supporting characters felt flat and didn't make a lasting impression, more drama than thriller apart from the last few chapters.
I was still waiting for the promised party, but it never happened. Instead, the story focused on hikes and family meals going on as if there wasn't a body hidden in the freezer. Not an awful story at all, just different than what was promised.

Butler Hall
Lizzie war monatelang in einem Sanatorium. Nun hat sie ihre Probleme weitgehend hinter sich gelassen. Ihre Mutter hat gerade wieder geheiratet. Gemeinsam mit dem neuen Ehemann George, seiner Tochter, deren Ehemann und Lizzies Bruder Liam verbringen sie das Wochenende auf Georges Besitz Butler Hall, ein schönes, aber halb renoviertes Haus mitten im Wald, zu welchem lediglich ein Fußpfad führt. Zunächst lässt sich die Party auch recht gut an. Zwar tut sich Lizzie etwas schwer mit der unerwarteten Hochzeit ihrer Mutter und ihr Bruder Liam ist seltsam zurückhaltend, aber vielleicht hängt es auch damit zusammen, dass sich die Familie erst wieder aneinander gewöhnen muss.
In diesem Thriller geht es um eine Wochenendparty die nach und nach immer mehr aus dem Ruder läuft. Das deutet schon der Prolog an, nach dem man annehmen muss, dass das nicht gut ausgehen kann. Und auch mit Liam will sie wieder eine bessere Beziehung aufbauen, obwohl es ihre Schuld war, dass er bei einem Unfall verletzt wurde. Im Laufe des ersten Tages lernt sie auch George, seine Tochter Freya und deren Mann Hudson besser kennen.
Leicht und locker beginnt dieser Thriller. Natürlich nicht in jeder Sekunde, denn Lizzie will klarmachen, dass sie die Probleme überwunden hat. Doch George verbreitet gute Laune und Clair unterstützt ihren Mann, um das neue Glück zu unterstreichen. Auch Hudson und Freya sind ein Herz und eine Seele. Beim Lesen denkt man zunächst, dass Lizzies Anwesenheit den Stein im Schuh des allgemeinen Glücks darstellt. Bis zu einem überraschenden Ereignis, dass eine Kette von Reaktionen in Gang setzt. Nach und nach wird die Handlung immer spannender. Immer mehr Geheimnisse der einzelnen Hausbewohner werden enthüllt. Dabei erscheint vielleicht Manches ein wenig weit hergeholt und beinahe jeder verliert Sympathiepunkte, aber die Anspannung wird so hochgehalten, dass man nur eine Chance hat: Weiterlesen.
Das Cover passt sehr gut zu der Vorstellung, die man sich von dem Haus macht.

Review for 'The Party' by Triona Walsh.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have also read her debut novel 'The Snowstorm' which I would also recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing and eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. I enjoyed 'The Snowstorm' by Triona and of this is as good as that one I'm guaranteed to enjoy this one too!! The synopsis stated that this book is 'A totally gripping psychological thriller, packed with secrets and gasp-inducing twists. Fans of Lucy Foley,K.L. Slater and Shalini Boland won’t be able to put this down'. I am a huge fan of K.L Slater and Shalini Boland so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 11 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Ireland 🇮🇪, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.I have actually holidayed in Ireland so am intrigued to see if I recognise places based on anywhere I visited while there.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Lizzie. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all feeling the hair raise on your arms and feeling the sweat run down your back.
This book is an interesting 'locked room' mystery set in one of my favourite places in the world... Ireland!!! I listened to this book on Audiobook and absolutely loved listening to the Irish accents which Roisin did a fantastic job portraying along with bringing the characters to life. We meet Liz who is fresh rehab after an alcohol and drug addiction. Liz's mother Claire picks her up from rehab with her soon to be husband George and Liz's brother Liam, to take her back to George's isolated country house. Claire's first husband and Liz's father Declan has been missing for years and is presumed dead. When they arrive at the house Liz meets George's daughter Freya and Freya's husband Hudson. Liz is in for several surprises starting with finding out that her mother has in fact already married George!! Liz promises herself that she will do her best to get along with George, Freya and Hudson as she could do without the stress anyway. However, things are made even harder as her own brother Liam is even refusing to talk to her. The next shock is a mind blower for everyone when the door knocks during the dinner party to celebrate Claire and George's marriage and when the door opens it is to none other than Liz's missing presumed dead father Declan!!! Declan refuses to go anywhere until he wins back the love of Claire and his children. Why did Declan fake his death? Will he be able to win his family's love back? Is he really there to do that or is he hiding something? Why is George's cook Mia blackmailing him? To find out the answers to these and many more questions then grab your copy today!!! This book is a slow burner but it is also ram packed with tension, drama, twists, lies, mystery, family, secrets, red herrings and much more! The fact that it is based in a remote location gives the book a chilling and ominous atmosphere which makes it a perfect book to read on a winters day in front of a fire or wrapped up in bed especially during the moments that make the hair on your arms stand on end. The suspect list is quite small so you are continuously guessing which of the small group is a killer. There were several twists throughout the book. I love how everything is wrapped up and explained at the end leaving no loose ends which I am not a fan of at all so well done Triona. The only niggle I really had with the storyline itself was the fact that I expected more of a an actual party than just a dinner party and it was just that little bit too much of a slow burn for me. However it is still a gripping and intriguing book with shocks I never seen coming and considering how many crime books I have read that is definitely a huge bonus as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Roisin Rankin who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Roisin did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Triona but also to listening to more books narrated by Roisin!
The characters were all realistic although I would have liked to see them more "filled out" as, personally they just fell that little bit flat for me. This normally puts me off a book but the twists and turns and Roisin's fantastic narrative skills made it easy to look past this fact. I wasn't a huge fan of many of them although I did like Claire and my heart went out to her throughout the book. This is a book filled with lies, twists and one where you have no idea which characters are telling the truth or who are hiding secrets so I won't go any deeper into my feelings of the characters as I don't want to spoil it for future readers.
Overall a suspense packed drama filled with twists you won't see coming!

Lizzie struggled with the death of her father Declan and is fresh out of rehab when she joins her mother and brother to celebrate her mothers new marriage. They are at the new husbands remote estate when suddenly Declan turns up alive and well! A gripping thriller with twists and turns. Who can you trust?

Nur wenige Thriller faszinieren mich auf Anhieb. „Nachtwald” von Tríona Walsh hat mich sofort neugierig gemacht. Ich beschäftige mich gerne ab und zu mit meinem Freund über alles rund um Outdoor, weswegen mir das Setting im Wald besonders gut gefallen hat. Das verfallene Herrenhaus ermöglicht eine mysteriöse Stimmung, welche die Protagonistin ebenfalls sofort wahrnimmt.
Das Cover finde ich sehr cool gestaltet! Es passt wunderbar zum Buch, ist nicht zu düster und macht Lust, das Buch zu lesen. Bisher habe ich noch keine anderen Bücher der Autorin gelesen, was ich aber nachholen werde. Ihr Schreibstil hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Die Autorin schreibt flüssig und nutzt zum Spannungsaufbau verschiedene Stilmittel. Insbesondere die authentischen Dialoge zwischen den Charakteren haben es mir leicht gemacht, mir die Geschichte bildlich vorzustellen.
Protagonistin Lizzie ist ein interessanter Charakter mit Ecken und Kanten. Sie ist sich ihrer Fehler bewusst und kann es auch nicht lassen, die Grenzen ihrer Familie auszutesten. Letztendlich möchte sie nur die Aufmerksamkeit ihrer Familie und Vergangenes ruhen lassen. Ihr Verhalten konnte ich durchweg nachvollziehen. Lizzie verhält sich menschlich und fehlerhaft, sodass man sich gut in sie hineinversetzen konnte. Weitere Charaktere wurden in ihrem Verhalten weniger authentisch dargestellt, da man sie als Leser in gewissen Situationen verdächtigen sollte. Um nicht zu spoilern, gehe ich nicht näher auf die einzelnen Charaktere ein.

Ich habe zu jedem Zeitpunkt mit Lizzie mitgefiebert. Das Ende war für meinen Geschmack sinnvoll und nachvollziehbar. Ich hätte es mir lediglich ein kleines bisschen weniger abrupt gewünscht.

Wow, what a book! This was one twisty read! I could not put it down! Suspenseful, intriguing, an absolutely brilliant page turner. Loved it so much!

This is a psychological thriller set in Ireland, and the voice narrator, who did a great job, has an Irish accent, which sounded lovely.
The story is about a woman called Claire whose husband dies, and she then marries a man called George, who along with their children, are having a holiday celebration, when Claire's husband turns up. This is shocking for Claire, and she just can't believe it. There is then a murder, and they all have to try to find out who the murderer is. They all then find it hard to trust each other.
This is a good family drama with a lot of suspense and tension. The ending is a bit shocking and crazy, but very enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Liz is fresh out of rehab and the last thing she needs is stress, so when her mom Claire picks her up with her new husband George Liz promises her self she will do her best to keep the peace and be the good daughter she hasn’t been in the past. It doesn’t help matters when her brother Liam refuses to even speak to her. When they arrive and George introduces his daughter Phaedra who also has a surprise, she two is newly married and introduces the group to her American husband Hudson. Liz, her mom and brother Liam cannot get over the grand estate George has taken them to he first said it was just a crumbling cottage but the remote home they arrive that is more like a country estate. This isn’t their only surprise however that night at the wedding dinner to celebrate the two couples they get a surprise guest NH Declan the fatherless thought was deceased and as far as she knew he had been for the past five years but he’s there alive and well. He claims he is back to win the love of Claire and his children but Liz thinks it’s for other reasons. Since the house is so remote they decide to wait until morning and George will escort Declan back to civilization but By the time morning comes it will be too late at least for Declan it will. When they have a family meeting and agree they will bury Declan since he is already legally dead in Ireland that doesn’t stop Liz from wandering who killed him. The only ones who didn’t have a reason was Phaedra in Hudson. Liz cannot stop thinking about how she saw Liam When she woke up to get something to drink in the middle of the night go into the garden and come back with dirty hands and that isn’t the only strange thing she notices about her brother Liam then when she goes to walk around the grounds she hears George and the cook Mia arguing it seems Mia is blackmailing George and while she ease- drops George is far from the easy-going golly Gee stepdad she has come to know. this book is a doozy of a thriller and although I didn’t understand how ultimately it seems Liz started running the show even though in the beginning they acted as if due to her previous drug and alcohol addiction she had no credibility maybe that means nothing but it was just something I noticed. I love thrillers and this is a pretty good one I also love books by the author and I will be honest and say I didn’t like this one as much as I liked her previous works it’s still is a thrilling re-packed with surprises and oh so many secrets. I received this book from Bookoucher I Netgalley but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

The narration on this book was great! So many different characters voices coming from only one person and it was always easy to tell who was speaking! The story kicks off with a bang with the main female character just getting out of rehab and joining her mom, moms brand new husband she’s never met, and brother at a secluded house in the woods to celebrate the marriage. It all goes south pretty quickly as secrets starts being revealed. So many different twists, some I saw coming and other not at all! If you like psychological thrillers give this book a try!

Lizzie ist frisch aus der Entzugsklinik entlassen und wird sogleich von ihrer Mutter und ihrem Bruder eingesammelt, um in das neue Familiendomizil Butler Hall zu fahren - neu, weil während Lizzies Abwesenheit ihre Mutter Claire einfach mal einen neuen Mann kennen gelernt hat und ihn nach sehr kurzer Zeit geheiratet hat. George entpuppt sich als charismatischer Lebemann, der außerdem auch eine Tochter in Lizzies Alter hat. Freya bringt außerdem überraschend ihren ebenso frisch angetrauten Ehemann Hudson mit. Und so treffen nun alle in Butler Hall zum ersten Mal zusammen. Das große Anwesen steht auf einer riesigen Länderei und befindet sich mitten in einem schwer zugänglichen Wald. Eine perfekte Location, um die Familienmitglieder zusammenzuführen und näher kennen zu lernen. Wäre da nicht ein ungebetener Gast, der am ersten Abend unverhofft zu ihnen stößt...
Nachdem ich den ersten Thriller "Schneesturm" von der Autorin sehr gemocht hatte, habe ich voller Vorfreude auf das neue Buch von ihr gewartet. "Schneesturm" hatte mich vor allem mit seiner toll beschriebenen Kulisse begeistern können und auch die vielen Infos zur irischen Kultur und Sprache haben mir gefallen. Auch "Nachtwald" spielt erneut in Irland, dieses Mal lernen wir die Natur jedoch in drückendem Sommerwetter kennen. Auch diese Kulisse im tiefen Wald hatte seinen Charme und hat vor allem wieder dieses Locked Room Feeling aufkommen lassen. Butler Hall zu verlassen, ist ohne Ortkenntnis nahezu unmöglich und setzt einen langen Fußmarsch voraus. Mir hat hier leider ein wenig die "irische Seele" gefehlt, die "Schneesturm" so besonders für mich gemacht hat. Im Grunde war es völlig irrelevant, dass Butler Hall sich in Irland befindet, es hätte auch jeder andere Wald sein können.
Unsere Hauptprotagonistin Lizzie war einige Monate in einer Entzugsklinik wegen ihres Alkoholkonsums. Nun wurde sie trocken entlassen und bringt einiges an Wissen und Hilfen mit, um nie wieder in die Sucht zu verfallen. Dass aber vor allem ihre zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen unter der Sucht gelitten haben, merkt man deutlich an der Kluft zwischen ihr und ihrer Mutter, auch ihr Bruder Liam verhält sich sehr distanziert. Das Thema fehlendes Vertrauen zieht sich durch das gesamte Buch. Eigentlich gäbe es also genug zwischen diesen Dreien aufzuarbeiten, so dass das Wochenende nicht nur der Familienzusammenkunft dienen soll, sondern eben auch Lizzie mit Mutter und Bruder wieder näher zusammenrücken kann. Lizzie als Hauptfigur war recht gut ausgearbeitet, während alle um sie herum leider etwas blass geblieben sind.
Nachdem das Buch einen recht guten Einstieg hatte und es den ersten großen Knall gab, ist die Spannung leider etwas abgeflacht. Es dauerte eine ganze Weile bis das Tempo wieder angezogen hat und leider ging das allgemein auch mit völlig abstrusen Entscheidungen der Charaktere einher. Es wirkte letztlich dann doch etwas zusammengeschustert und unglaubwürdig, vor allem da ich durch den Klappentext ein wenig etwas anderes erwartet hätte. Für Fans von Familiendramen könnte "Nachtwald" gut geeignet sein, wer hier einen echten Thriller erwartet, könnte eher enttäuscht werden.

Für mich konnte Nachtwald im Punkt Atmosphäre allerdings nicht ganz mit den anderen Büchern, die ich von Tríona Walsh gelesen habe (Schneesturm, The Other Couple), mithalten. Auch der Plot plätschert zu Beginn sehr stark vor sich hin. Das Buch ist in vielerlei Hinsicht häufig mehr Familiendrama als Thriller. Dabei erfindet Walsh das Rad auch nicht unbedingt neu, sodass erfahrene Thriller-Leser einige der Plot-Twists bestimmt schon kommen sehen konnten. Vertrauen und Wahrheit/Ehrlichkeit sind als übergreifende Themen in diesem Buch sehr präsent. Auch die Dynamik der Familie von Protagonistin Lizzie nimmt einen großen Teil der Geschichte ein. Dadurch passiert über viele Seiten hinweg nicht besonders viel außer Yoga, Wanderungen und langen Gesprächen. Irgendwie konnte mich die Spannung erst gegen Ende wirklich erreichen.
Im Grunde bleibt Nachtwald ein solider, atmosphärischer und nicht allzu blutiger Thriller, der besonders für Thriller-Einsteiger zu empfehlen ist. Wer Lust auf ein ausführlicheres Irland-Setting und mehr Action, Intrigen und plötzliche Twists, ist bei den anderen Titeln von Tríona Walsh gut aufgehoben.

Sehr langwierig
Als ich gelesen habe, dass es sich hier um einen Thriller handelt, war ich erst mal ziemlich
vorsichtig. Langsam anfangen, damit mich die Boshaftigkeit nicht direkt überrollt. Als dann
nach einer ganzen Weile aber immer noch nichts Spektakuläres passiert war, bin ich auf das
Hörbuch ausgewichen und siehe da, damit ging es besser.
Allerdings war die Story jetzt trotzdem nicht so Hammer. Es zieht sich ohne Ende und dann
diese verqueren Denkansätze, die auf die falsche Fährte locken sollten. Hat anfangs auch och
gut geklappt, aber irgendwann wurden selbst die etwas langweilig. Der Showdown, der dann
wohl richtig erschrecken sollte, hat mich dann vollends enttäuscht. Einziger Lichtblick war
der Zusammenhalt, der am Ende Früchte getragen hat und sogar ein gutes Ende nahm.
Die Sprecherin war überzeugend und hat das Buch sehr gut umgesetzt, nur hat mich leider
das Buch selbst nicht überzeugen können. Gut unterhalten hat es mich zwar, aber von einem

This book takes place in an isolated cottage in an Irish forest, where a family is celebrating the marriage between George and Claire. However, things go terribly wrong and only escalate from there.
Despite what the blurb seems to suggest It’s Claire’s daughter (Lizzie), and not Claire herself who is the main character, and the POV we read from. I was initially skeptical of this, but it did work out great for the book, and I definitely felt like this was the right choice for this book. I also felt like the narrator of the audiobook, Roisin Rankin, felt perfect for the voice of Lizzie, and it really made the book more enjoyable.
I love isolated thrillers, and while this book felt a little slow in the beginning, I was still kept fairly entertained and the ending made it all worth it.
If you like a slow paced Domestic/ Familial thriller, or anything from Lucy Foley, this could be a good fit for you.

Leider war das eher ein durchschnittliches Leseerlebnis. Mir hat von Anfang an die Spannung gefehlt, die nur am Ende ein bisschen aufkam, dann aber durch das langsame Voranschreiten vorher etwas too much auf einmal war. Die Idee hinter dem Plot finde ich eigentlich gut, aber die Charaktere hatten in meinen Augen wenig Charakter und die Story um den überraschenden Gast und wie sich das ausspielte wirkte auch etwas flach.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I can't decide whether I liked it or hated it.
The first third of the book was slow going and i nearly put it aside but I persevered and kept going. If I had been reading a physical book rather than an audiobook I probably wouldn't have.
The middle third got slightly better but I loved the last third. So many plot twists and unexpected turns.
The narration of this audio was wonderful. Ranking irish accent was perfect for the characters and kept even the most longwinded parts interesting.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I have also read her debut novel 'The Snowstorm' which I would also recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its intriguing and eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. I enjoyed 'The Snowstorm' by Triona and of this is as good as that one I'm guaranteed to enjoy this one too!! The synopsis stated that this book is 'A totally gripping psychological thriller, packed with secrets and gasp-inducing twists. Fans of Lucy Foley,K.L. Slater and Shalini Boland won’t be able to put this down'. I am a huge fan of K.L Slater and Shalini Boland so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 11 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Ireland 🇮🇪, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.I have actually holidayed in Ireland so am intrigued to see if I recognise places based on anywhere I visited while there.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonist is Lizzie. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all feeling the hair raise on your arms and feeling the sweat run down your back.
This book is an interesting 'locked room' mystery set in one of my favourite places in the world... Ireland!!! I listened to this book on Audiobook and absolutely loved listening to the Irish accents which Roisin did a fantastic job portraying along with bringing the characters to life. We meet Liz who is fresh rehab after an alcohol and drug addiction. Liz's mother Claire picks her up from rehab with her soon to be husband George and Liz's brother Liam, to take her back to George's isolated country house. Claire's first husband and Liz's father Declan has been missing for years and is presumed dead. When they arrive at the house Liz meets George's daughter Freya and Freya's husband Hudson. Liz is in for several surprises starting with finding out that her mother has in fact already married George!! Liz promises herself that she will do her best to get along with George, Freya and Hudson as she could do without the stress anyway. However, things are made even harder as her own brother Liam is even refusing to talk to her. The next shock is a mind blower for everyone when the door knocks during the dinner party to celebrate Claire and George's marriage and when the door opens it is to none other than Liz's missing presumed dead father Declan!!! Declan refuses to go anywhere until he wins back the love of Claire and his children. Why did Declan fake his death? Will he be able to win his family's love back? Is he really there to do that or is he hiding something? Why is George's cook Mia blackmailing him? To find out the answers to these and many more questions then grab your copy today!!! This book is a slow burner but it is also ram packed with tension, drama, twists, lies, mystery, family, secrets, red herrings and much more! The fact that it is based in a remote location gives the book a chilling and ominous atmosphere which makes it a perfect book to read on a winters day in front of a fire or wrapped up in bed especially during the moments that make the hair on your arms stand on end. The suspect list is quite small so you are continuously guessing which of the small group is a killer. There were several twists throughout the book. I love how everything is wrapped up and explained at the end leaving no loose ends which I am not a fan of at all so well done Triona. The only niggle I really had with the storyline itself was the fact that I expected more of a an actual party than just a dinner party and it was just that little bit too much of a slow burn for me. However it is still a gripping and intriguing book with shocks I never seen coming and considering how many crime books I have read that is definitely a huge bonus as it is getting harder and harder to surprise me.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Roisin Rankin who did a great job bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Roisin did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Triona but also to listening to more books narrated by Roisin!
The characters were all realistic although I would have liked to see them more "filled out" as, personally they just fell that little bit flat for me. This normally puts me off a book but the twists and turns and Roisin's fantastic narrative skills made it easy to look past this fact. I wasn't a huge fan of many of them although I did like Claire and my heart went out to her throughout the book. This is a book filled with lies, twists and one where you have no idea which characters are telling the truth or who are hiding secrets so I won't go any deeper into my feelings of the characters as I don't want to spoil it for future readers.
Overall a suspense packed drama filled with twists you won't see coming!

Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the read/review of #TheParty by #TrionaWalsh. This was a first time author for me an I was pretty impressed. The book was twisty and wild. Being secluded is a fear all in itself. Would recommend.

Ein Herrenhaus mitten im Wald. Ein unerwarteter Gast. Ein Wochenende, das zum Albtraum wird… Der Beginn des Klappentextes sagt schon das Wichtigste. Und ja, das hat man so oder so ähnlich schon x-mal gelesen. Aber wenn es gut gemacht und geschrieben ist, lese ich so etwas eben gerne auch noch x weitere Male. Und Triona Walsh macht es hier definitiv gut.

Was mir positiv aufgefallen ist: Die Autorin hat sich weiterentwickelt und an entscheidenden Stellen nachgebessert. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger kommt die Geschichte in NACHTWALD deutlich schneller zur Sache. Sie hat auch insgesamt etwas mehr Drive, wie ich finde. Außerdem gibt es diesmal keine ungewöhnlichen irischen Begriffe und Namen, die einen beim Lesen unnötig aufhalten. Das geht einerseits zu Lasten der irischen Atmosphäre, ist aber andererseits gut für den Lesefluss.

In anderer Hinsicht bleibt Walsh ihrem Stil treu. Sie arbeitet auch in NACHTWALD mit einem überschaubaren Personenkreis. Wir haben sieben Charaktere, die in einem atmosphärisch inszenierten Setting platziert sind. Das hat mich auch diesmal wieder an Agatha Christie erinnert. Obwohl NACHTWALD ein Thriller und kein Krimi ist, erinnert die Machart schon irgendwie an einen klassischen Locked Room-Mystery – nur eben in die Moderne transportiert. Der Handlungsverlauf macht entsprechend großen Spaß. Die Autorin hat Spuren gelegt, denen ich folgen konnte. Teilweise haben sie mich in die Irre geführt. Aber es gibt auch zahlreiche scheinbar lapidar eingestreute Hinweise, durch die man tatsächlich auf die Lösung kommen kann. Man hat also eine reelle Chance zum Mitraten.

Ich habe hier ein spannendes Familiendrama erwartet bzw. erhofft, da sich der Klappentext ganz spannend und interessant angehört hat und der Einstieg in die Geschichte fand ich auch ganz gut, aber nach und nach gab es dann doch einige Längen in der Geschichte, die den Spannungsbogen einfach geschadet haben, was ich schade finde, denn ich mochte die Idee der Geschichte, aber irgendwie scheitert es teilweise an der Umsetzung. Die Handlung blieb jedoch hinter ihren Möglichkeiten zurück.
Die Charaktere sind solide gezeichnet, aber haben nicht wirklich einen Wiedererkennungswert, obwohl Lizzie (die Hauptprotagnistin) noch am besten dargestellt wird und wenigstens etwas Tiefe besitzt.
Der Schreibstil ist sehr flüssig und angenehm, sodass man dennoch schnell durch die Seiten fliegt. Es ist jetzt nicht langweilig gewesen, aber stellenweise etwas lahm und irgendwie brauchte die Handlung einen kleinen Anstupser, was zum Ende auch gekommen ist.
Zum Ende hin wird es dann auch endlich mal wieder interessanter und spannender und konnte den lahmen Mittelteil wieder gut machen, auch wenn man schon die eine oder andere Vermutung hatte, die sich hier auch bewahrheitet hatte, dementsprechend ist das Ende auch nicht sehr überraschend gewesen, vor allem da der Personenkreis sehr klein gewesen ist.
Insgesamt ist es für mich eine solide Geschichte gewesen, die gute Ideen hatte, die jedoch meiner Meinung nach teilweise an der Umsetzung scheitern. Kann man auf jeden Fall lesen, aber man muss es auch nicht.

Widow, Claire and her children, Lizzie, freshly out of rehab and Liam are back together for Claire’s wedding to George, after a whirlwind 6 months romance. They are joined at George’s remote mansion by his daughter and newlywed American husband. However, the day takes a dramatic turn when Claires dead husband shows up. Declan admits he faked his death and left Claire to pick up the pieces of his failed business. Emotions become fractious and Declan says he is not going anywhere without reuniting his marriage and family life. However, the next morning, Declan is found dead and this time he is definitely dead. Due to the remoteness and high security surrounding the mansion, the murderer has to be one of the wedding party.
Plenty of twists throughout, some of the characters seemed rather flawed and a little unrealistic but persevere, an entertaining read and the ending is worth it.

This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. All the twists and turns were crazy. Just when you think you have it figured out, nope! Definitely can’t wait to read more by Tríona Walsh!

Die Geschichte klang so gut, aber die Umsetzung hat mich nicht gepackt. Erstens ist es in meinen Augen eher ein Slowburn Thriller, denn so richtig Spannung kommt erst auf den letzten Seiten auf. Und da gingen mir die Protagonisten schon so auf die Nerven, dass mir egal war, was mit ihnen geschieht. Bis etwa zur Hälfte war die Geschichte noch ganz interessant, doch dann erging sich die Hauptperson in wilden Spekulationen und handelte so dermassen unlogisch, dass sie mich nur noch aufregte. Das Ende war leider auch vorhersehbar, daher von mir nur zwei Sterne.

Das erst zweite auf deutsch übersetzte Buch von Triona Walsh. Wie auch Schnee Sturm war dieses Werk voll mit Details über den Schauplatz und spannenden, unvorhersehbaren Wendungen!
Für mich war es noch nie so einfach sich Vorstellungen über Protagonisten/innen und Orten zu machen wie bei diesen 2 genannten Büchern! Ich freue mich auf weitere Bücher die ins Deutsche übersetzt werden und habe hohe Erwartungen :).

This started out promising but I quickly lost interest. I didn't like a single character in this book and frankly didn't care what happened to them. It felt like gothic horror rather than a thriller. I found myself rolling my eyes numerous times. I enjoyed The Snowstorm by this author but this one just wasn't for me.
