I knew going in that this book would annoy me - as a Welshie (part of Great Britain since the 11th Century) I knew a book called the History of England would frustrate me. And boy did it frustrate me. For me it should of been the history of Britain and not England - as Wales and Scotland join the union.
However, whilst it did cherry pick a lot through British history (and pretty much skimmed the Empire and its devastating affects throughout the world), early history was well researched and actually made reading about the early monarchs far more interesting than I thought possible.
For the lack of detail, the cherry picking of events to focus on and the complete ignoring of Wales and to an extant Scotland and Ireland, its probably not worth picking up. Unless you want a quick and easy read of English history.....

I would like to have given this book 4-1/2 stars. In terms of accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is better than a 4. It provides a very well done survey of English history without getting bogged down in details. My major concern was the editing which, in my view, was sloppy. In one instance an entire line seems to have been deleted and no one caught it. Headings were also used and formatted inconsistently. Beyond that, it was a good read.

This was an excellent brief history of England - I feel like it was a much more effective teacher than my history lessons at school. All the highlights that I was peripherally aware of were included and a lot more to tie it all together. Highly recommend if you want a super brief overview of the last 2000+ years of England's history (up to WW2), it's a great starting point to then go looking for more depth from other sources.

England has a long and important history. I expected asynopsis, a quick distillation with little substance. What is is, it is not that. It is over 200 pages of history. A great start for anyone learning about England, a book that opens the door for anyone. Enough to tell the stories and let the reader understand. Enough to have a reader decide which, if any, to study further.

This is an excellent overview of the history of England and gives you an inside look starting from prehistory and Bronz era up to the incidents that shaped England into the country it is today. It is well written and easy to read making it a great book for reference.

Fascinating

I speed read this book and thoroughly enjoyed my refresher on history that I learnt at school. A unique monarchy and mother of all parliaments are but two gifts to the world. A superb read.

a very useful succinct history

This is very much an overview of key English historical events through the last 2 millennia but very useful for those like me who never had the opportunity to gain an overview of our history while at school. The style is direct and no nonsense.

A good overview of England. A history of events rather than personalities.

history

Thank you so much for condensing Englands history into a short readable lesson. Now my Viking movies and Regency books make a lot more sense.
