This is the other of my favorite bird books for the place I live now. It is the perfect companion to my beloved "Birds of the Puget Sound Region" by Bob Morse, Tom Aversa, Hal Opperman. Here's my review of that one:

Since regaining my sight, I've recovered my enthusiasm for nature walks, including identifying the birds around me. This particular book stands out because of the format and the illustrations. The rounded corners and sturdy but flexible cover make it particularly delightful for throwing in a pack or really large pocket/pouch while out and about, and there's a bit of room on each page for notes. The matte finish pages make it easy to write on, unlike the other book, which has glossy pages. A checklist at the rear is necessary in each bird book, imho. It's there.

Write-ups are good, and the pictures are lovely when they are present. But, I just opened up to a random page. Page 50 lists 3 species on top (Parasitic Jaeger, Long-Tailed Jaeger, and Pomerine Jaeger) and has exactly one picture (of a Parasitic Jaeger, light phase adult). You're left to read the text and try to guess how to differentiate between "two elongated central tail feathers" and "two long streamers". Trying to ID gulls with this book made me sad.

A great book for the Pacific Northwest. Artists rendition of the birds can be a little off making identification difficult at times. Good information about the habits and nature of the birds.
