This was a fun and quick read (although I also listened to it at times). Ranee Clark is a fairly new author to me but I really liked this story although I thought the ending was tied up rather quickly.

Blanche is very wealthy, unmarried, 27 year old woman, but her money is controlled by her maternal grandfather, who cut off her mother after marrying someone he didn't approve of. She loses $1,000 in a foolish wager and knows she can't get the money to pay it off without her grandfather finding out

A Lady and a Spy is everything I love about historical romance.

Pros:
The story is original, with an unpredictable twist at the climax of the story. The writing is quite lovely and the dialogue is witty and believable, natural. Clark did a wonderful job with pacing and flow. The characters developed in their relationships without it feeling hasty or rushed. I was totally absorbed in the story and breezed through it in a couple of hours.

Cons:
I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the endi

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought the plot was well thought out and had some unexpected twists that not only caught me by surprise, but really added depth to the story. The characters were engaging and likable. They were well written and had distinct personalities. I found myself laughing, horror struck, grinning like a fool, and hopeless at different times in the book. I was impressed with the author's voice and style.
Very well written! I would easily suggest this book to anyone who enj

A cute afternoon read. Alex, our hero was so dashing and sweet, I really wanted him to find love with someone who deserved him. Blanche is a rich orphan who makes a lot of bad decisions. Sometimes it was really hard to relate to her and all the lying she did to the people she was supposed to love. But, this is somewhat of a redemption story, so that was nice to see. I loved the secondary cast of the best friend and little sister, and for a novella, they were nicely fleshed out. The vill

Fun and engaging story

I really enjoyed A Lady and a Spy. It kept me engaged and had a few different elements than the usual Regency story, hence the "spy" in the title. Great quick read!

Parts of this one were promising, but it just felt really unfinished.

This was a great clean Regency novella. A lot of novellas and short stories feel rushed, but for the most part I felt like this one had enough time to grow and flourish, although I thought the end was wrapped up a little too quickly. I would like to have seen that drawn out a little more. It had great characters, real dilemmas and a fresh story line. I could completely understand how Blanch would do anything to avoid her Grandfather's disappointment. One thing that caught me off guard was that t ...more

I need to disclose that I dislike lying and deception from the main character--so how I came to buy this book is anyone's guess. However, Despite my discomfort, I enjoyed this story. I did feel the end of the book was too hurried and so I was a bit disappointed there.

During her early years of reading, Ranee` S. Clark devoured fantasy books, which continued into her adulthood—since she often believes that a well-written romance novel is a delightful fantasy. Though raising three boys can sometimes hamper both romance with her own Mr. Charming and her writing, she tries to get a little of both in every day. And most of the time she succeeds. ...more
