Despite a record-breaking college career, Pennbook University's star quarterback, Breaker Lawson, has been passed over by almost every team in the NFL, nearly ending his pro dreams before they have a chance to come to fruition.

But Breaker Lawson is a real tough kid.

When his name is read off on the last day as the two hundred and fifty second pick for the season to the San Francisco Redwoods, Breaker is thrilled to have his chance in the big leagues, even if being crowned 'Mr. Irrelevant' means spending the foreseeable future warming the bench.

Thrilled, that is, until he receives the phone call that changes everything. After a year of doing his best to avoid his former best friend, Breaker will yet again be suiting up on the same team as Lennon Griffith- the man who managed to shatter Breaker's heart with one simple word.

Brother.

When a string of injuries force Breaker off the bench and onto the field, he and Lennon are forced to shove their awkward animosity to the side and become the in-sync duo they once were for the sake of the team.

Will playing together be the shove these two need to get over their insecurities and see each other for what they are? Or is their relationship heading for a three and out?

It took me a bit to get into the story, but I liked the idea of the book. Sadly, the execution didn't work for me, at all.

The story is told in first person present tense, alternating pov.
There were many time jumps, but they didn't bother me much.

What didn't work for me was the way the author developed the plot, and the writing style.
(This might get slightly spoilery, not contentwise, but in reference to the book's romance-pace).
.
.
.
.
The author jumped from months of basically no communication about what mattered, to thick as molasses monologues (sorry for the visual, but at one point in the story the air right before the orgasm hit was thick as molasses (?!?), so I had to let you feel that effect, too).

There's sweet and romantic, and there's overly sappy and unbelievably cringey. Unfortunately the middle part of this story is the embodiment of the second variety.
Around the 50% mark the author dropped all pretense of restraint and seemed to think: LET'S GO!!
The MCs threw all the honeys, babies, sweet things around that were available, it was insane, no way to escape the pet names. And the dialogues.. they weren't really dialogues but one monologue after the other, full of intense feelings, so, so many overwhelming emotions.. I have never read anything like this (and I hope I won't ever again).
Afterwards I felt exhausted and had to put the book down for the day. The next day I tried to push on, but I gave up at 80%.

This seems to be the author's first mm romance. I guess I won't try her fm romances, lol.

Ps is there a law that says that every man who gives his first blowjob has to be described as (and I quote) "what he lacked in experience, he made up for with raw talent and enthusiasm" ?!?

Tldr:
Long periods with next to no real/useful communication, followed by, BAM! all the intense and exaggerated communication immaginable (with lots of giggling and pet names), then there's lovey-dovey sexy stuff, also obviously football stuff, and then I gave up.

I'm at a loss for words to describe how this book made me feel 🥹. It was such a beautiful, romantic, and short book (and I hate that it was short 😔). Breaker and Lawson are the kind of characters that slowly creep into your heart, and when they finally settle in, you immediately know you want them to stay there forever ❤️. The way the author wrote about them was so loyal, lovely, and sweet that every negative interaction in their relationship made my heart ache 💔. I've been a Swiftie since 2012, and when I read this book with its Taylor Swift references, I loved it even more! 🎶 Every line, every song. I hope to read more from this author 📚.

I dnfed at 70% - okay I skimmed to finish it

It started off well.
Truth was they both had secret feelings for each other and once that was out in the table - what was the point

Honestly it felt very juvenile. These were not college graduates playing at the NFL level. Maybe it would have been better as a college book.

I think I lost some brain cells reading this. If you want a light, idiots to lovers, over the top, obsessed with Taylor swift book - here you go.

I freaking love it. I loved it soo much, I finished it in one sitting

It occasionally had me giggling and screaming at characters. Was pretty involved throughout the book

I loved the transition from a crush in college that developed into a relationship
The whole bromance to romance 🤭

The characters were pretty much perfect. The chemistry was good. I was so happy after reading, you know, the giddy feeling and all.

I also liked the side characters, be it the mom, owner of the franchise and his family or their friends. It was so well put together

A massively refreshing read!! Breaker really had me hating him for a while - Lennon was the sweetest most genuine guy and Breaker kept breaking his heart - I sure had some tears especially the locker room PR interview scene - ugh!!! What I so appreciated here was that when Breaker finally grew a pair and apologized to Lennon (but only after being forced to talk by shoved in a pantry) we didn’t just brush past the apology with them falling madly in love afterwards. NOPE! Breaker done fucked up and Lennon was not going to just forgot all the hurt that he caused. I loved how Breaker didn’t just apologize through pretty words but through action. And it didn’t happen instantly which was satisfying for me. I love a good grovel. Yeah these boys were hot AF once Breaker figured his shit out. A spicy, very sweet, heart wrenching time was had and I would love for this author to put out more MM romances!! There are more boys on this team that I want stories for 😬❤️

DNF 22% in because if the selling point is that one MC is in anguish because of his feelings for straight best friend then 22% in is too early for the 'straight' best friend to have realized a BLOODY YEAR ago that he was in love with the gay one.

I want to work for it a little. Sorry.

No star rating because honestly I can't say I really read this. Nipicked one thing and noped out.

Shout out to Truly Yours PR and the author for the ARC copy. This was my first M/M romance and it was pretty good. It was hard for me to keep the storylines of the two main characters straight because I felt like the dual POVs were the same. I couldn’t remember which one was “out” and which one wasn’t because neither were really vocal about it. However I did enjoy the football perspective seeing as most people can’t understand how men of a certain caliber/career can be attracted to other men. All in all it was a solid read and I give it a

Oh, this one was good; I laughed a lot, Breaker and Lennon were beautiful, i really liked their friendship, even though there were moments when I wanted to grab Breaker and shake some sense into him, I ended up liking him a lot. This is the first book I've read by the author and I think I'll read all her books because I enjoyed her storytelling style.

Now, about the story, it's good, a beautiful friends-to-lovers with a touch of drama. The best part? The author provides a timeline (present and past) and we get to see exactly when these two fall in love but here's the thing: while Breaker is openly bisexual, our guy Lennon isn't and Breaker doesn't know this, and some things happen that leave them both with hurt feelings.

Now they both play for the same team, and everything continues more or less the same until they finally realize their feelings. It wasn't too late into the book, which I appreciate, but it did make me suffer a bit. As for the sports aspect, I don't know why, but I felt like I was watching a game by the way the author wrote it, while reading, vivid images played in my mind and I'm not one to watch American football unless it's the Super Bowl and only during halftime, but i really liked that part!.

The story is a quick read; there's not much drama beyond what I mentioned at the beginning, and overall, the characters were so lovely and I had a great time reading it.

📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

1. Una buena playlist.
2. Fans a muerte de Taylor.
3. Referencias a Taylor y Jason Kelce.
4. Referencias a los Philadelphia Eagles.
5. Spicy (obviamente).

Another amazing read by Emily, she is absolutely one of my favorites and auto buy/read author for me.

Starting off strong with Lennon who is this big teddy bear and you just fall in love with him and his personality definitely golden retriever energy. Breaker is more reserved and to himself and he is openly out as Bi and my heart just broken for him when he mentioned how he acts in the locker room to keep everyone comfortable even if they didn’t openly have an issue with him.

This is dual timeline going between their college days in Philly and Breaker’s rookie year in the pros. In college Breaker realized his feelings for his best friend and when a miscommunication happens he decides for his heart it would be better to create some distance. Of coarse fate steps in and Lennon is traded to the team that has drafted Brekaer and Lennon is set on getting his friendship back.

Tension rise and I will say I was more upset with Breaker than I was at Amir in You All Over Me, the hallway scene I mean rip my heart out and stomp on it. Once they communicate like the adults they are it is beautiful and perfect.

Side Note: James Cat Daddy Adler YES. I was so excited to see him and Georgie as well as Kira and a small cameo from Amir and Rachel, but James stole the show and reminded us all why he is just perfect his love and obsession for Georgie still going strong. The twins I am still laughing at the twins.

Add this to your TBR for a little of everything swoon, laugh, heartbreak and spice.

Overall, this is a simple, fun, and enjoyable read. The story isn't too complicated, there isn't much angst, so it's a nice stress-free read. I love both our MCs. Breaker and Lennon have a complex relationship. They are best friends who have fallen in love with each other, but won't say anything in fear of ruining what they already have. I did like the dual timeline aspect of the story since we were able to get more background on Breaker and Lennon's history, so that was definitely a nice addition. That said, I did struggle with some of this. The writing seemed a tad unimaginative and one-note but also showed potential. This is only the author's third published novel, after all, so I'm curious to see what growth there will be in future books by this author. Also, the pacing felt off once we hit the halfway point. It's a nice slow burn that I was definitely here for during the first half. But once our MCs finally get their ducks in a row and get together, it felt rushed. And the ending felt like it was cutoff, which was a surprise when there wasn't one more chapter or an epilogue. Overall, this is a simple and enjoyable read that's good for the brain and gives you the serotonin. Definitely a fun time.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I have honestly never enjoyed a football romance more than this one. Taking a break from the hockey of it all (and now baseball??) this author clearly loves the sport and can make it entertaining for plebs like me.

One of my favorite parts of this is that it is a bi awakening and NOT panic. Those stories are absolutely important and I read them too it’s just super fun to read a character come into their queerness in such a self-accepting way. There’s not a homophobia, internalized or otherwise, storyline and sometimes you just really want to read a happy romance like that.

But don’t worry there’s still angst from other sources. These 2 have drifted apart in recent years, Breaker absolutely knows why while Lennon is clueless, and come back together when they are brought on to the same team (having previously played together in college as solid BFFs). There are flashback chapters but not too many and I wouldn’t call this dual timelines as a result. Some memories were called back upon at just the perfect moment.

They are just so GOOD for each other. There’s no OW/OM drama. There’s moderate spice, it’s open door. Thank you to the author Emily for the eARC!! It was so fun to see my faves from GOMM as well getting some side character action (still a standalone)

Thank you so much to Emily Shacklette and Truly Yours PR for selecting me to read this eARC in exchange for an authentic, honest review. This book is available July 9 2024.

Two former college football friends have finally made it to the big leagues, and on the same team! Breaker and Lennon were unstoppable and inseparable during their college days. When feelings get hidden, a simple word broke their hearts. Now having to play together in the NFL have made them force to face their feelings, build their teamwork, and be honest. This story is heartwarming, inclusive, and leaves this reviewer satisfied.

Breaker and Lennon share a lot of the same qualities, of course with their own quirks. The romance was a slow burn, yet quick paced at the same time. I read this in virtually one 8 hour sitting and I was craving more. It was great to read a LGBTQ2S+ story that had a supportive group of side characters- especially in a world where not everyone has a strong community.

Emily is a new author for me and I am very happy to add another must-read author to my list. This story was written well- no gaps in the story, the dialogue made sense for the characters, and the story got its closure.

If you are looking to add a new LGBTQ2+ story to your romance collection please consider The Brotherly Shove.

This book had a cute premise, but the execution and plot were not for me. The constant jump between past and present felt off, I would have much rather had it be half a book set in the past and then the other half in present. The entire book is mostly a miscommunication trope, which admittedly isn't my thing. And then the book ends super abruptly with no real conclusion or wrap up of things between the characters and their careers. The spice was ok, and the romance between the characters cute. But all in all, it was just a meh read for me.

ATE THIS UP! was i screaming at these characters to get a grip and communicate? yeah. was i surprised at the speed in which they flipped to calling each other baby and honey? a bit. but i was too darn entertained and invested to give a shit about any of that. lennon was like a big teddy bear and breaker’s anxiety connected with me on a deep level. overall i lived, laughed and loved (even though there were probably far too many taylor swift references but hey i recognized them all so 🤷🏼‍♀️)

The Brotherly Shove follows Breaker was a great college quarterback. He finally gets drafted, after years of getting picked over. He is thrilled to finally be playing in the big leagues. But everything changes when he finds out he will be playing with his college teammate Lennon. They used to be best friends but had a falling out. Breaker is bi and has always had a huge crush on Lennon. But Lennon is straight so Breaker thinks. Soon Lennon and Breaker reconnect. Will they finally share their love with each other?

I thought this was a cute read. It was also pretty fast paced. I do feel like Lennon was very unlikable at some points. But once the main characters got together I was hooked. It was just a really cute sports romance book.

Thank you Yours Truly PR and Emily Shacklette for the arc of this book.

✨eARC Review ✨

Breaker and Lennon are probably some of the most lovable idiots you’re going to meet in a romance. They’re nerdy, dumb, strong, blind to the truth, but oh so freaking lovable and honestly, at times, relatable.

What I find incredibly relatable about this story is the frequency with which we see right person, wrong timing. As someone who played that back and forth game with partner for over 3 years (YIKES, I know), I LOVE when stories don’t show an insta-love/insta-romance blossoming. Sometimes it happens, but other times, it literally takes time. Breaker and Lennon are that perfect pairing to showcase that time and conversation and clarity aren’t always easy. Neither is putting your heart on the line.

The dual timeline of this story really helps showcase the growth of all characters involved — both in this current romance story, but also back weaving in on previous storylines Emily has written. It’s like it’s all coming together, and I absolutely love that.

What this storyline highlights: a beautiful friendship, the little details that they notice in one another, and the sacrifices one is willing to undergo for the sake of love.

For anyone who loves a good friends to frenemies to idiots to lovers (and not necessarily in that order), you will love this text.

Would read again: Yes!
Would recommend: Yes!

Thank you so much to the author and Truly Yours PR for the advanced copy of The Brotherly Shove!

I had not heard of this author before seeing this ARC sign-ups, but I was intrigued by the description of the book and gave it a shot! I'm excited to dig into her previous works now. There was a couple (non-main characters) in The Brotherly Shove that I felt got some special focus, and it turns out they're the couple in Georgia On My Mind!

Football Teammates
Bi-Awakening
“I Love You, It’s Ruining My Life”
Dual POV
HEA, obvs.

This is one of my favorite quotes from The Brotherly Shove:
I flop him right onto the center of my unmade bed, and he wastes no time curling up under my blanket and snuggling his face against my pillow. I chuckle to myself, unable to squash the thoughts that creep in. The ones that say that the way this muscled, athletic, manly quarterback melts into a puddle so easily in my presence is just so… Fuck it. It's so goddamn cute.

I really loved the secret wanting/pining (from both sides) in this book. The Dual POV and varying timeline really gives you a look into the relationship between Lennon and Breaker and how they really cared for each other from the start. From teammates to best friends to ex-friends and back again.

-Breaker and Lennon were super sweet as teammates and best-friends. I loved them bonding over Zelda and video games. Them always sharing a bed when their hotel rooms (for away football games) always had two beds for them. Just some cozy best buds - who were each secretly harboring feelings for each other!
-At a certain point, Breaker got a bit incel-ish to me, when he didn't want to be friends with Lennon anymore after the conversation. It was heartbreaking to see how he treated Lennon who just wanted to be close to him, in anyway, as their relationship changed. Even more heartbreaking when you get Lennon's POV of the same scene and see he panicked because of the look on Breaker's face, and broke his own heart just as much.

-One of my reading updates was something about being unsure if the book was going to read like the author just pushing two Ken dolls together and telling them to kiss. Like, was this just a checkmark to complete for a representation to-do list, or if there was going to be more to it for these characters. While not perfect, I did enjoy reading this couples journey. Some of the mixed timelines and mixed POV really showed you both sides and the bit of miscommunication / misunderstanding of each others true feelings - but at the same time, it felt a little all over the place when it was more than two timelines.
-There were a couple times in the book that I made a yikes face, like two times where someone said something about not being a pervert. It felt pretty unnecessary, and honestly in a book with a same sex couple, and the types of prejudice queer folks face on a daily basis, I just didn't like the idea of perpetuating any of that, even if it's to expressly say they're *not* - it just shouldn't be in the book at all.

Overall, I enjoyed the read, and I'm interested in seeing some of the authors others works.

Not really a spoiler but marking it as one because it's a gripe with this unfinished ARC I read but it really doesn't matter, so I'm hiding it *shrug*

This is the first MM romance I've read. Let me be honest, I'm not into MM romance like so many other girls. So it wasn't an easy decision to sign up for this ARC.
When Emily first posted about this book, I was like "Damnit why does she do that?". I loved both of her other books and when I love an author, I need to read all their books. But I said, no to myself. Then she announced that James and Georgie Adler would be in this book. And I thought the same again. And again I said no to myself.
But I'm weak. I'm just too weak to stay with a no for Emily's books. So here I am, writing/posting my first review for a MM book 😎
And do you know what? Come on, you already know it because you saw my rating! Yes, I loved it. This book is so good 🤩
I laughed so much. And I'm still convinced Emily is crazy 🤣
The scene in the supply closet. And the scene later in James Adler's office... 🙈🤣
And don't let me start with the Adler twins. No, I just can't 🤣

Breaker and Lennon are so cute. They are so perfect. And this chemistry ⚡🔥
Breaker already outed himself to be bisexual. I loved that his teammates never had a problem with it/him. And neither had his best friend Lennon. They had the perfect bromance. Until both fell in love with each other. And here started the problems. First falling in love with your best friend and second falling in love with your straight best friend...

This book is written with two timelines. The now and also flashbacks to the past. Situations where they realized their feelings for each other. Situations of flights, disappointments... Sometimes it hurt to read it 💔

Oh, and I so loved Breaker's mom. She is the best and she can always call out his BS 🤣

And the end of the book 😱 Parts I didn't see coming but one I did. It's the only scene with homophobia. If you have read Emily's other books, you will know what will happen... 😁

I think this might be a case of the book just not being for me. It’s a cute concept, the writing’s not terrible, and I do appreciate that one of the guys is actually big and burly and chubby, which is not something you see often in these books. However, I think it was a bit too saccharine for me. Once they finally talk and get together, they immediately start calling each other honey and baby, and well, I’m just not a fan of that

There’s also too many real world references for my tastes, as those always take me out of a book. In particular it seems the author really likes Taylor Swift and wants you to know about it. And I get it but it felt a bit heavy handed. There was one time where one of the characters mentions something about not liking Marvel movies, how if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all, and like, true, but also it didn’t really have anything to do with anything and sort of felt like the author just sharing her own opinion apropos of nothing

Another admittedly minor thing that made me roll my eyes was the habit to glaze previous characters a bit too much. One of the MCs mentioned how both people in this couple were hot, how rich and cool they are, how all the ladies in this group must be awesome, etc. And I get liking your own characters! But it just gets to a point you know, like their additions in the story were more about showing them off rather being there organically

Also there’s two times where the mcs try to announce they’re dating but both times the other characters are like “oh we know, we could tell, we had a bet lol” and it felt too tropey and dismissive. And it was kind of hard to differentiate the povs between Lennon and Breaker, it felt kind of samey after a while

I imagine there’s people out there who are looking for something light and fluffy and tropey that will have fun with this book, but for me personally it just missed the mark and I found it more grating at times than enjoyable

Please don’t come at me…This was my first MM romance. I started this book on 11/5 evening and it was exactly what I needed to help distract myself. I finished on 11/6…it definitely lightened the dark cloud hovering over my soul. A sweet love like Lennon and Breaker was much needed, especially at a time when I was so angry and hurt after the election.

Breaker and Lennon are best friends, and college football teammates. Not only are they important partners in the game, they become inseparable. Breaker is out as bisexual. Lennon is straight…but meeting Breaker has him realizing he‘s not as straight as he thought. On top of the connection their friendship brings, both are sexually attracted to the other. But they both keep it to themselves it wanting to ruin their friendship or the team dynamic. But a moment and a few words changes everything!

This dual timeline story was full of mutual pining and angst as “Idiots to Lovers” Lennon and Breaker go from 1)teammates to strangers to teammates, and best friends to ex-best friends to lovers. I was sad for Break first and I get he was hurting but then I was so mad at him, boy went on my shit list for a while because of how he treated Lennon. I love that big burly Lennon owns his feelings. And his heartbreak hurt me so deeply! He is my baby teddy bear!!! After they come together, I was proud of their healthy communication and how they dealt with their relationship! For my first MM romance with bi/gay awakening, I’m so happy it was with no panic or worry. I wish we could live in this world Emily wrote while there was a moment of homophobia the majority of this story and the organization B and L played for was not only accepting but were vocal and adamant allies. My heart was so happy with the James and Georgie cameos. 🥰🥰

After a last round draft pick in the NFL, college star quarterback Breaker Lawson is heading to SF. The only problem? So is his former best friend, crush, and teammate, Lennon Griffith. Also known as the man who broke his heart. The two were known for their untraditional football play in college that no one could seem to figure out how to defend. Even though Breaker joined the team as a third string quarterback, Mr. Irrelevant is called to the field as a starting quarterback after the injuries sideline other players. Can the two of them work through their past and get back on their winning streak like they were before?

This was such a cute book. I was kicking and giggling for a good chunk of it. My heart breaks for Breaker for what he and Lennon went through when they were in college, thinking so wrongly of what the other's feelings were. While this book is a textbook, CLASSIC miscommunication trope, I think that the relationship was extremely redeeming once everything was out in the open and they were able to re-hash through everything that happened that fateful night and get back on track. Real idiots-to-lovers though, but once they finally figured it out, I was so happy for the two of them. And shout-out to the Adlers for being absolute ALLIES in their relationship. Fricking coach.

I like don't watch football at all, I only read about it, so I'm actually curious if the brotherly shove/tush push is even a legal move? I need to ask my football friends lol

4.5 ⭐️ "I told you, B. We are inevitable. We were always meant to be." 🥹

Breaker and Lennon have been best friends since their first year playing college football together. Their friendship has drifted apart since Breaker’s feelings shifted and he realized Lennon didn’t feel the same, until they find out Breaker just got drafted to the same NFL team Lennon got traded to and they have to play side by side again.

I absolutely ADORED this book and these boys 😭 this is one of those books where I just wanted to keep reading and avoid all my responsibilities 😂 Breaker and Lennon are both so soft and sweet with so much love for each other. There were flashback chapters to their college days which really helped to build that connection as friends but also see where their feelings got muddled in the middle. Low stakes love but there was a liiiitle bit of angst, just enough to make my heart race. I was swooning and sweating and just loved them to pieces! 🫶🏻

The title is something you’ll get as you read.. but they’re not brothers or anything of the sort 😂😂

Microtropes & moments I loved:
The slip of “baby” when he didn’t mean to say it 🤭
One calls the other honey 😭
Subtly Swiftie coded (unless you’re a super fan you probs won’t even notice)
The pantry
Lennon’s hotel room 🫠
Soooo much pining and secret feelings

Tropes:
Friends (idiots) to lovers
Secret relationship
Mutual pining
NFL teammates
MM
Forced proximity
Bi awakening
