This is not a very worthwhile learning aid for Old Icelandic (Old Norse). What one gets in its 72 pages are a few basic noun and verb paradigms and some reading passages with interlinear glosses, but it stops just as one has started to make any significant progress with the language. Chapman’s effort (which feels like little more than well-typeset lecture notes) may have filled a gap when it was first published in 1964. However, Valfells & Cathey’s Old Icelandic: An Introductory Course, which appeared a few years later, is also based on new paradigms followed by exercises, and it will take the student well beyond the material in this book, all the way to being ready to tackle a whole-length saga.
