I purchased this book in 2022 when we lived on the island of Hatteras in the Outer Banks. We lived and worked at Camp Hatteras RV Park from spring until fall. Soon after we arrived in the spring a noreaster came through which was my introduction to living on a sandbar. The only road on and off the island was shut down because of the sand and water covering it. So for a few days, we were cut off and truly battening down our hatches, living in our motorhome, riding out the storm. To learn more about the area's history, we visited the life-saving station of Chicamacomico, and saw the museum and the re-enactors teaching how they used the life-saving equipment. So I was well-primed to read this book which I purchased in their gift store.
My experiences helped to bring these stories to life as I read the book and I enjoyed reading about the shipwrecks and the surfmen from the life-saving stations who saved sailors from the wreckage on the dangerous waters of the Outer Banks.

Enjoyed the book greatly, a quick and easy to read book. Gives an overview of some of the interesting cases of ships wrecked along the Outer Banks.

This book wasn't particularly well written, and desperately needed a good editor, but the stories and the history of the area made up for the faults. These were fun to read to my family.
