So cuuuuuuutie. Anyone who likes demons should read this, it was so much fun in a small book, made me completely and utterly happy.
Should that have been more? Yes, absolutely!!! And does it end when it's just really nice? Yes absolutely, to go crazy!!! But still, so wonderfully beautiful.
Told from the perspective of Jamie, a "boring" human who has no magic himself and therefore lives at the bottom of the food chain. He is sweet and interesting. And yet I got the impression that the only person in this book was Lyn. This demon is the most wonderful creature there is. I am in love.

“I could be getting myself railed in three different ways right now, but no! You just had to summon me and inflict your rotting ick on me. Unsolicited, I might add!” 🖤😂🖤

“Look at how weak and pathetic you are,” they breathed in awe. “You’re so cute. I wanna bundle you up and carry you around in a pouch like a kangaroo.” 😍🖤😍

This book is just a story of getting to know each other a tiny bit, there is almost no romance, basically it's "just" about saving Jamie's life.

“Let’s go home and get you some clothes.”
They blushed beautifully, one of their tails circling his waist and squeezing as they fell into step beside him. “Did you like my war hammer?”
“Yeah, that was pretty badass.”
Lyn pumped their fist. “I knew it. I used to have a battle ax, but there’s just something about a war hammer.”
🖤😂🖤

And folks, no sex, well so faded to black that you can't count it as a sex scene. It's enough to make me tear my hair out and yet I'm totally satisfied. Because, this kiss … 😳🫠🥰

I’m sorry but ..why isn’t this short book more popular??? OH MY GOD, I LOVED LYN THE MONSTER!!!
Enby, femme, sassy, endearing, sweet, clumsy, powerful, brave, this character is absolutely AMAZING. Gosh, I loved this short story , I really really did. The supernaturals, the world building, the dialogues, the banter , the sexual tension , Lyn’s look and aspect ..such a quirky monster , I just..I’m so hyped right now !
Oh whhhyyyyy, why didn’t the author make it a normal length novel, whyyy was she so cruel as to deny even a tiny tiny (explicit)sex scene whyyyy???😩 And most importantly whyyyy isn’t Lyn on the cover ?? What’s with that boring cover??? I need some graphic art because I’ll be forever miserable if I don’t see what Lyn looks like .
Jamie, the human was interesting too but he pales compared to Lyn and I don’t think that was the kind of monster he had in mind when he summoned one 🤣 Lyn trying to feed him by cooking him a rather disgusting feast was hilarious and also everything..gah I wanted to smother them in hugs and kisses.
“Free” on KU , I TOTALLY recommend it if you want a heartwarming short story with a sassy and sweet yet powerful monster, banter, sexual tension, action/adventure and ..just a feel good story. Too short thus not quite a 5⭐️ but see if I care 😁

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

This little novella was all kinds of zany, and was seriously rocking some intense "Clueless" vibes that sent me spiraling fondly back to my '90s to noughties era movie binges! (Shout out to Drew Barrymore who pretty much defined the goofy romcom of this era...I'm looking at you, Julia Guglia 😂)

Uhhh ok right! So back to the review for this novella lol!

I thought this story was well written fun and pretty darn adorable. And ofc Jamie and Lyn were all kinds of silly and sweet. The world was also fantastic! I wouldn't mind reading an entire book set in NK's New Chicago, so hopefully there'll be more to come after this!
So yeah, for my second NK title I thought this was really good! I'm definitely looking forward to exploring Knight's backlist as well as everything else to come from this talented author in the future!

This book was actually good, funny and cute. I missed a lot of the fun vibes during the first half, but I do think it’s entertaining afterwards. I love their banters a lot. Ridiculous, but fun. Fated mates who knows they always have a choice, but can’t get enough of each other 😛😛 Kinda wish it was a full length, I would’ve enjoyed it better. I like Lyn for their flirtiness and Jamie simply being an easily annoyed person hahahaha

for a novella with zero gratuitous sex scenes, this really hit the mark for me. i swear Lyn had me in stitches even though the way they talked was so ridiculously modern and will date itself within the next five years, it was like reading some of the shit my own friends say and that tickled me endlessly. this isn't typical romance by any means, but the plot was good and for being just over 100 pages, quite a bit happens. i'm super impressed with this and i loved the prose. the setting gets established in the first couple paragraphs, which honestly blew my mind. my only gripe is that i would have LOVED dual POV for this, especially with the fated mates bit. i feel like i missed out not getting first person with both Jamie and Lyn, but you know what? i'm not gonna complain cos this was just too much fun.

“Then you lie that gorgeous, little ass off.”
“You think my ass is gorgeous?” he blurted before he could stop himself, and Lyn grinned, black eyes glinting dangerously.
“Honey, I’d snack on that ass for days,” they crooned, and Jamie flushed to the tips of his ears. He shoved their hands away.
“Would you stop saying shit like that?”
Snickering under their breath, Lyn ran a hand through their teal hair. “Like you haven’t checked out my ass.”
“I would never!” he spluttered.
Lyn smirked, their expression infuriatingly condescending. “Please. You’ve seen me naked. Don’t act like you didn’t like it. It’s insulting to my intelligence.”
“You naked is literally the last thing I’d ever want to see.”
“Hmm, that’s a lie.”
Jamie stammered nonsensically. “Your ass is flat and ugly.”
“Um, hurtful, but still a lie.”
“I don’t like you!” he seethed, and Lyn clasped at their chest, simpering unfairly.
“You’re lying. I love that for us.”

didn't want to leave off without giving a snippet of what had me giggling so much.

anyways, i'm so glad i got this as an ARC from GRR. & as always, my review is my own x

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“For hell’s sake!” the demon cried, stamping one silver, crystal-studded pump against the pavement. “Summoned mid-blowjob? Seriously?”

I don’t have tons of thoughts on this one, but it was quite funny, very well written and entertaining. I had a good time reading it, and both main characters were interesting.

“I told you, when shit hits the fan, I’ll bring the badass.” “Shit is hitting the fan, Lyn. And you got your face smashed in!”

There’s no spice (not explicit at least), and the characters get together at the end, so I would look at it more as an ‘adventure’ type story more than a romance. The main characters just also happen to be soulmates with good chemistry, lol. It was all very cute. Oh, and I mentioned funny already, but it really was.

“Yeah, it really wants to kill you.” “I know,” he seethed, pointing viciously at Lyn. “That’s why I summoned you!” Understanding dawned, and they shook their head vigorously. “Oh no, I’m not dressed for this.” Jamie gaped at the demon, and they waved at their feet. “Um, I’m not getting ghoul pieces on my Jimmy Choo’s, thank you very much.” “But it’s going to eat me!” They sucked on their teeth, then offered him a patronizing simper. “That sounds a lot like a you problem.”

“You literally just beat a ghoul into a bloody pulp with your handbag, and you’re grossed out by a little spit?”

“I’m going to disembowel him.” Lyn grinned darkly, flashing too many teeth. It was the most demonic they’d ever looked, and Jamie was mortified when his dick twitched behind his zipper.

surprisingly humorous?? just looking at the cover it looks like a normal mm grim, dark fantasy novella but its definitely not. lyn is dramatic and funny and colorful(literally and figuratively) while jamie is pessimistic and slightly insecure. there's an interesting mixture of grumpy x sunshine and demon x human but the demon is the 'sunshine' character and i love it :DD (plus the bonus surprise of fated mates!!)

the plot is pretty good and wrapped up nicely as well for a novella (cos most novellas i've read just have a really simple storyline and focuses more on the romance).

My Opinion: Whilst plot is serious enough to make it a very solid little read, entire banter was so amusing I found myself laughing through a lot of it, and quoting more of it to friends, in hopes it’ll entice them to read it too. From a very fun definition of a demon to a very nicely woven intrigue around service to evil mages, and what would it take to leave said involuntary service. Very short, very amusing, highly recommend for an afternoon good time.

A 4 out of 5, give it a turn.

I really enjoyed How to Survive a Summoning, a novella about Jamie, a human who summons demon Lyn when he's trying to outrun a ghoul. The world building was impressive and I'd love to read more in this universe.

Nikole packs so much humour, plot and emotion into this novella and I loved it. Jamie and Lyn were both compelling characters. The story was relatively short but really satisfying.

Angst: 3/5, not between the MCs

4⭐️ story (just because I want a more solid hea)

This novella is perfect for the closed door fantasy lovers! Jamie finds himself on the wrong end of a ghoul chase and just so happens to have an amulet that allows him to summon a Demon. The demon he gets though is Lyn, the enby, sassy & powerful fashionista demon. The rest of their story is mostly lighthearted and humorous with some great “who did this to you moments” and a very sweet final act. I definitely wish this was a full length book or hope we get to see these characters again in the future!

A fast-paced novella that is left fairly open-ended for the possibility of adventures to come.

This was low heat/fade to black, which worked for me in this case. I like the subtle flirting and their banter. Their relationship felt genuine and like it would continue to grow.

There's some action and plenty of magic. I really liked the world-building and descriptions the author used though it is never explained that the demon is a they, that pronoun is just used automatically.

A fun read and one I'd likely pick up again.

This was not what I was expecting from a novella, even though I'm not sure why I'm surprised because Nikole always seems to deliver. Between the mystery and humor, mixed with the sexual innuendos, the satisfaction felt in such a short period of time is astonishing.

The storyline was incredibly well-written and the character development was completed nicely. Nothing felt hurried, allowing ample time for their budding romance to ignite. Lyn stole the show with their antics, and Jamie just added to the fun, though it would have been better with dual POVs, but the wittiness wins it all.

Lyn for the 🥇

Having previously read the novella, it was nice to put some voices together with these characters. Though I have to admit, I was not impressed with the narrator even though he did do a great job depicting Lyn’s character but Jamie is another story. I did forget about the humor involved with this story, too, and how much I enjoyed their dialogue and development together as a couple.

Lyn still stole the show with their antics, and Jamie continued with his contributions. I’ll hopefully remember Lyn’s debut, especially with the interruption Jamie was responsible for, only to wind up with the most incredible outcome for both unexpecting characters

This short story was a rollercoaster of a ride. It's full of danger, mythological beings, magic, humor, innuendos, sweetness and sass. Indentured slave/servant Jamie needs help and his help is summoned in the form of snarky, sassy, demon Lyn. These are two opposites who are fated to be together and their differences compliment each other well. I enjoyed ow they get to know each other. it's really only a super short amount of time, but so much happens in that time that it seels like they get to know each other rather well. It feels a little like the ending is a mix between a HFN and a HEA and I hope there might be more with these two as their relationship develops because I think they could seriously become a powerhouse couple.

I've read the ebook and I've listened to the audiobook. Nick Newport is a new narrator for me and I enjoyed his reading of this story. His portrayal helped bring the characters to more life and brought a sense of fun.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Audiobook - lovely narration that really captured the wonderfully dramatic demon being that was Lyn. They were absolutely brilliant and really unique in the best ways. Although Lyn and Jamie the human were fated mates the story was sadly too short to have them progress further than a kiss (although that was amazing). I would be happy to read a whole series around Lyn.

Independent reviewer for GRR, I was gifted the AUDIO version of this book.

I like to listen to books I've already read, but this one jumped out at me, and I jumped straight in!

I loved this!!

It's only short, some 120 pages/ 3 hours and 6 minutes listening time, but it packs a powerful punch!

We jump straight into Jamie being chased by a ghoul, after he broke into the house guarded by the ghoul. He summons Lyn, using a stolen amulet. But Lyn wants their amulet back, so he can be free of Jamie. That is, until they touch. Now Lyn wants to free Jamie from the warlock who has him shackled.

Like I say, LOVED this. It's a bit scary, a bit funny. It's got some dark moments, and some much lighter ones. It's got violence, quite graphic in palces, but I think it really is needed to show how scared Jamie is of the warlock and his minions. (They had a proper name and creature title, but I couldn't get it, so minions they are!) I loved that Lyn is really NOT how they appear. Given the fact that Lyn is a demon, they do not come across as very demon-y. Until Jamie is threatened, that is, and then Lyn unleashes they true form. Granted, they still come across as LYN, with all their sass and humour, but the demon is a bad ass, and I loved that surprise!

What I loved most about this, though, was how almost CLEAN it is, on the smexy times! I mean, the whole book takes place over pretty much 24 hours, and it's hard to pack so much in a short listen, but I don't this was let down by the lack of smexy times, AT ALL! Jamie and Lyn do get their moment, yes, but its all off page, faded very much to black, and I really did love that.

Only one thing could of made this better, and that was if Lyn had been given a say. But I'm just greedy like that and it's my review and I always want more!

Nick Newport narrates.

First I've listened of this narrator. A quick looks shows me more for me to get my teeth into, just as soon as credits allow. I loved the narration here. Newport gets across all of Jamie's fear of Cyrus and the minions. All of his growing attraction and feelings for Lyn. Lyn's voice is perfect for them. But again, the emotion comes across in Newport's voice for Lyn, and you feel for them both.

I can't really fault this, bar me being greedy so it can only get:

5 stars across the board!

I loved Jamie and Lyn's story! To be honest, I love everything Nikole Knight writes, and once again she came up with a unique and fascinating universe with lovable characters to get to know. Jamie was a human forced into working for a warlock, and Lyn was a fabulous demon who had a vibrant personality to match their fashion style. After one of Jamie's work assignments went horribly wrong, he summoned Lyn in a desperate attempt to keep himself alive, and thus their story started. It was so entertaining to see the way Lyn and Jamie interacted at the start, and though their lifestyles seemed incompatible there was something about them that just worked. The two of them had their ups and downs as they hunted down the missing amulet and tried to free Jamie from his warlock's magic, and I was utterly captivated for every single moment. Jamie wasn't exactly thrilled to find out he and Lyn were fated mates after having zero agency over everything else in his life, and for a long time I thought that connection was destined to fizzle into nothing. But working together naturally brought Jamie and Lyn closer together, and when Lyn showed time and time again that they wouldn't push boundaries or force anything between them, I was hoping Jamie would eventually soften to the idea of having a mate. In the chaos of recovering the amulet and freeing Jamie I almost forgot that Lyn had no reason to be on Earth once his deal with Jamie was fulfilled, but thankfully Jamie didn't let too much time go by before giving Lyn the sweet declarations of love they needed to run off into the sunset together.

“I mean, it’s technically illegal to summon a demon.
Especially if the demon goes on a rampage.”
“Rampage? Bitch, I just saved your life.”

❥ Single POV
❥ M/X Romance
❥ Short Story
❥ Paranormal
❥ Fated Mates
❥ Demon x Human
❥ Grumpy x Sunshine

💕 This was such an enjoyable and fun listen, and short too, only 3 hours long. But it was plenty of time to get a full story, where Jamie is trying to survive a bad situation with a shady warlock, who may or may not want him dead, and therefor had Jamie in a situation where his only choice was to summon a demon with the amulet he’d just stolen, an amulet which the shady warlock is desperate to get his hands on. But giving the amulet to the warlock would have bad consequences for the demon James summoned, a demon who’s quickly becoming someone James cares about.

💕 Jamie and Lyn were both really interesting characters. Jamie is a bit of a grump, and he tries so hard to be immune to Lyn’s charming ways. Lyn on the other hand is quicky and sassy, and it was so much fun reading about those two together. The sexual tension is high, but there is no explicit sexual content, which was almost disappointing with their chemistry.

💕 Nick Newport is a new narrator to me, and he did amazing. He totally nailed making Jamie and Lyn their own characters, and the switch between the “voices” were flawless, especially with Lyn’s more feminine and sassy way of speaking.

Jamie ran for his life, it looked like he’d lose it to the ghoul, a quick summon with one of the stolen amulets saved his life… for a moment it seems.
Poor Jamie, his life belongs to an angry warlock and now his soul to a Demon, both want the amulet.

Losing Lyn’s amulet, they insist Jamie helps to find it. Because, hey, Jamie gave his soul to Lyn.

When Jamie touches Lyn, strange sensations are flowing through him, Jamie is suspicious it’s manipulated by Lyn.
Because they can’t be fated, can they? No, no, nope. Still, he had to trust Lyn when they said they would protect Jamie and find the amulet.

Lyn, Demon from the seventh circle of Hell, wearing Prada and Jimmy Choo’s, is theatrical hilarious, oh-em-gee outbursts, it was super duper fun.
Lyn is definitely the highlight of this story, a magnificent creature, they are full of fun, is emotional and so lovable.

This author writes in an absolutely breathtaking style and crafted this story in such a lively way, that I felt as if I was in a movie. Watching the events was just an amazing experience! A story with all the feels, that earns all the stars.

Eminently enjoyable and utterly devourable queer paranormal short story. I absolutely loved sassy femme demon twink Lyn, and totally agree with other reviewers that we need some character artwork to fully visualise our NB pink demon in all their Louboutin-stomping glory. It’s a romance mostly only in that that’s where you know these two unlikely fated mates will end up, the story is very much focussed on our human MC Jamie’s attempt to escape a grisly death at the hands of various paranormal beings, which is the reason he summons – almost accidentally – Lyn. As a result there’s almost no on-page action but the story is so good I found I didn’t mind. If this was a full length book I’d have been even happier.
“I left a hook-up with a Cerberus for YOU?! Do you know what a Cerberus is famous for? Well I’ll tell you, it’s not the 3 heads on their SHOULDERS”

The audiobook is short and sweet, well paced and characters well characterised. NB. How to Survive a Summoning first appeared in the Fated Mates Charity Anthology in 2023 and so far as I can tell is unchanged from the original.

This review is for the audiobook.

This is a fun, quirky, entertaining story. It's different from other stories I have read or listened to from Nicole Knight. There is minimal angst or real danger or drama. It felt mostly like a comedy to me. While I enjoyed the story, I felt it was missing a few things, like history/world-building, and romance. I wanted to know more about the world Jamie and Lyn live in, and I never really felt the attraction between them (maybe a little from Lyn, but not Jamie). I can definitely see them forming a long-term friendship, but not romantic/sexual love or fated mates. That's okay by me, but not for a story billed as a fated mates romance. I loved the MCs, especially Lyn's mix of over-the-top fem and bad-a$$ery. I recommend it as a funny enjoyable story. I received a free copy of the audiobook, and I enjoyed the narration. Nick really captured Lyn's fabulousness as well as Jamie's uptight doom-and-gloom mentality. I was surprised to see the human as the 'grump' and the demon as the 'sunny' in this grumpy/sunshine story, but it really worked.

MM Fantasy Fated Mates

Although a relatively short audio, it was packed with laughs and a great read/listen.

Jamie is a human who is in trouble, full stop. His whole life is a mess. He then summons Lyn, and boy, does it get worse first.

An absolute joy of a read. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.

Nick Newport's narration was a delight. His clear and distinct voice, his ability to switch between different character voices, and his knack for keeping the listener engaged made the experience truly enjoyable. I found myself speeding up the narration to 1.20 on Audible, which is my norm.

Jamie is running for his life from a ghoul when he decides to use the amulet he stole to summon a demon to help him fight that ghoul. Now he has more on his plate than anyone can handle – a soul debt and an angry warlock. Now he also has to worry about his heart in addition to his soul.

This was a fun short story. I love this as it was captivating from beginning to end. Jamie had so much to deal with and was quite overwhelmed. Summoning Lyn was the best thing he could have done, except now he owes Lyn. Lyn was an incredible monster, filled with contradictions. It would be nice to see more of these two. They could do a lot together. Sweet and quite complete, How to Survive a Summoning is sure to be a pleasing read.

How To Survive a Summoning by Nikole Knight is a very different take on a romance/ fantasy/ paranormal type romance. For me I loved the concepts. They are truly different and refreshing to see something out of the box I actually love that from an author. However a romance to me this book is not. It feels like the author forced that a lot. Which made me sad cause really the concepts are great.
I loved Jamie. He is goofy at times, cute at times, and in his own way badass at times.
Lyn is the same but with more sass. Which I appreciated.
Overall I have very mixed feelings about this story. I love it and I don’t at the same time. I would recommend this story to someone who likes an off beat storyline and is willing to suspend too much reality, and just look at this story as a fun read.

I loved this story when I read it in the Fated Mates Anthology last year (Story review below), so I was excited to listen to it in audio. Nick Newport did a wonderful job bringing this story and these characters to life. Just like when reading, Lyn was the star for me. Nick gave them all the sass and snark they deserved and made me laugh. This is the first time I've listened to Nick's narration and I hope to hear more.

“What [ ] are you doing, sneaking up on a demon like that? Are you trying to separate my soul from my body?”

This was such a fun read. I liked this world and the story started off exciting from the start and probably the best meeting of two characters that I've ever read. Unexpected and make me cackle! I loved demon Lyn so much and could read of whole series of books about them alone. I loved it!
