Field of Screams: Haunted Tales from the Baseball Diamond, the Locker Room, and Beyond

Rate this book
Baseball and ghost stories are as American as apple pie. Enjoy both in this unique collection of otherworldly yarns.   From the authors of the popular Haunted Baseball  comes this all-new collection of spooky stories from ballplayers, stadium personnel, umpires, front-office staff, and fans, exploring the sometimes amusing and often eerie connection between baseball and the paranormal. The haunting of Yankee Stadium, the ghost of Babe Ruth, and inexplicable encounters at the Hall of Fame are among the many tales herein. While spotlighting numerous major leage teams, Field of Screams also includes minor league ballparks, hotels, and baseball memorabilia, and concludes with a look at major league pranks that players indulge in to spook one another.   Featuring Major Leaugers   Torii "People say when you go in [Yankee Stadium] you just have this chill that you're going to lose. Like the ghosts are whispering in your ear the whole time you're walking to the clubhouse, to the dugout, on the field."   Tim "I'm not answering that door! If it's a ghost or a real person, I'm not answering it!"   Roy "I don't know what it was, but I called the front desk to change rooms."   Adrian "It was haunted, man. I'm dead serious. I was real scared."

I won this through the Goodreads First-reads giveaway program and I received my autographed copy just 2-days after winning it! So, a big thank you to the authors and goodreads for this one.

Baseball players, as a rule, are probably some of the most superstitious people you will ever run across. So, it makes sense to me that they would be a little more likely to believe in ghosts or the paranormal. What surprised me most about this book though is the sheer number of stories told and the number of players who report odd occurrences. I'm sure a few of the stories could be explained away as pranks perpetrated by teammates but I don't think that's the case with all of them. Some say that ghosts/spirits will linger in an area that was important to them in life. So, why wouldn't an all-time great baseball player linger at his home stadium?

There were also a few stories that I thought I knew already but come to find out, I only knew part of the story. For example; there was the story a couple years about the construction worker who, while helping build the new Yankee Stadium, buried a David Ortiz jersey in the structure in an attempt to curse the Yankees (god bless him). Reading this book, I found out that he was only one of several people burying things like that in attempt to either curse or bless the team (depending on who they rooted for). It almost makes me worry about the structural integrity of the stadium with all the paraphernalia buried in it!

Bottom line; this is a fun read for pretty much any baseball fan. Even if you don't believe in ghosts or the paranormal there is still a lot of interesting history written about here.

Not exactly what I was looking for (spooky Halloween-season read), so I didn't enjoy it as much as you might. Baseball fans like my mom will probably love it (if they like reading, that is).

I won this book as a First Reads and I have to say I found this book very enjoyable. I am not one for baseball all that much, but this was an entertaining read! Kind of makes me want to go to all these hotels and stadiums and see if I have any ghostly experiences. :)

This wasn't as good as first book book but still great. These books aren't ghost stories as much ad they are telling about old stories, stories behind myths, and history of the game. If you love baseball and appreciate it's past, I recommend. Loved it!!!

I thought the stories became a little off topic towards the middle of each of them. Though, overall, I had to say it was very good.

Very poorly put together. More fan superstition garbage than ghost stories. Don't waste your time.
