Oh My Gosh. By overanalyzing them in College, I had forgotten how depressing and whiny these characters were. Also,

Jean Racine's writing stays brilliant, though. Hence the 3 stars.

Andromaque merits at the same time both five stars and one star. It is a five-star play because it is highly representative of Jean Racine who created a model that was followed for two hundred years afterward throughout Europe. Shakespeare was throughout this period generally thought to be a greater playwright but no one understand how to follow in his footsteps. Racine who combined the display of the implacable working of fate from Greek drama with the courtly language of Medieval Romance provi ...more

Racine does write the best tragedies. I never enjoy reading a French book as much as when I read one of his plays, they truly make me connect to my own language and I think this is really beautiful. (And he also chooses the best stories.)

Andromaque ..

Oreste, fils

The afterward notes that this is a play about love as a fatal illness, I believe it depicts love as a pure virtue. The three characters, Orestes, Pyrrhus and Hermione, who express unrequited love are each faced with tragedy in the end, but their feelings did not encapsulate true love. Their passions reached a point where they consented to inflicting harm on those they were pursuing in order to satisfy their own personal desires. It was only Andromache that expressed true love, for both her son a ...more

Scarcely a generation removed from the events of the Iliad, the hatred between Greece and Troy remains fresh and is apt to explode anew. Andromache, the widow of Hector, and her son are held captive by Pyrrhus, king of Epirus. The Greeks want the Trojan heir dead to quell fears of revenge years later, but it is Pyrrhus’ love for Andromache which compels him to protect the last remnant of Hector’s line. Political pressure and capricious feelings of love threaten the tottering balance between Troy ...more

The complex ties which bring the four protagonists of Andromaque together and make their downfall inevitable are the essence of the beauty of this tragedy, and Racine, having set up this conundrum, explores it poetically through human feelings – succeeding in both never revealing the hopeless outcome and always reminding us that it is there, waiting, at the end of the last act. The reason I found this play so engaging was, perhaps, that it has every element of a Shakespearean comedy and romance ...more

Man, how time flies. . . . I read this as an undergraduate in a class on French literature at Bradley University. In French! Now, I can scarcely make out more than fragments here and there! This is, though, a fine tragedy from Jean Racine, one of the great classical French tragedians. Looking at my marginal comments reminds me of how much of my command of French has disappeared (probably forever). . .

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". My first introduction to Racine through the 1960 blank verse translation by Muir, this strong tragedy from one of "The Big Three" of post-Jacobian French drama (along with Molière and Corneille) is an adept look into the lives, loves, hatred and psyche of the heirs of the Iliad. Though not nearly as compelling, poetic, or rich as those of the Elizabethan theatre (read: Shakespeare), the pathos is solid; a fully cathartic play.

Recommended in Landmarks in French Literature and my first Racine play, Andromaque is a robust play. Succinct and fast-paced, it is nonetheless very vibrant and the emotions its characters express are varied and follow seamlessly one after another.

One of its main advantages is that it builds upon Homer's The Iliad working with famous character and a renowned backstory. This spares this piece the drawbacks of exposition.

However, the most paradoxically delightful, yet unpleasant, element is t

Not one of my favorites

Because Marcel Proust was so fond of Racine, I was hoping that I will like his work too.
Marcel Proust is the best writer I know.
But alas, I did not enjoy Andromache as much as I perhaps should, even if Racine comes with such important credentials.
It is my shortcoming and this is happening to me often enough: I do not take it to heart and then the work makes me think of other things.
At least in this case, Andromache has reminded me of Literature as
Andromaque by Jean Racine

This is in many ways a classic, but it did not capture my attention.
I may have or develop an ADD- attention deficit disorder.
Whatever that may be, I did not concentrate on the play.
There is a divorce which may affect my abilities to grasp a play, but I tend to miss on Corneille, Racine…
There may be a tendency to accept more of the modern writers- since I enjoyed Room at the Top and others like it.
Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Educating Rita are two other modern works that hav

Jean Baptiste Racine was a French dramatist, one of the "big three" of 17th century France (along with Molière and Corneille), and one of the most important literary figures in the Western tradition. Racine was primarily a tragedian, though he did write one comedy.
