The Stage 1 Biff, Chip and Kipper Stories provide humorous storylines to engage and motivate children. This is one of a series of readers titled 'More First Words' which introduce children to simple words and the characters' names.
This book is about a family which consists of parents, their 2 sons; Chip and Kipper and their daughter; Biff. They are at the beach, where dad has got a big floating banana for them to all sit on, whilst on the sea. One by one each sibling gets on the float, eventually when all 3 siblings sat together on the float, the float couldn't hold them all. This caused them to fall off the float and splash into the water, making mum and dad wet whilst the float hit dad on the head.
This book is more suitable to early years and key stage 1 children’s who are learning simple words and are just beginning to learn how to read. As each page has maximum 3 words, it makes it easier for early years to be able to read these sentences and understand them. The book repeats many words such as; get, on & and, this allows children to familiarise themselves with the words and allows them to use their understanding of phonics. The book is brightly illustrated, so it therefore attracts younger children. This book would also allow children to develop comprehension skills, by reinforcing the story again through simple questions such as; who got on the float first? I believe this book would be very useful to use in key stage 1 classes or early years, as it will be an easy and interactive way to teach how to read and use phonics. Other books by Roderick Hunt with regards to Biff, Chip and Kipper can be used to further develop the children’s understanding.
Get on,Biff.Biff got on. Get on,Chip,Chip got on. Get on,Kipper.Kipper got on. Oh,no! (Where was the family? Who got on first? Why did the children all fall off?
