At once a dirty joke and a highbrow novel, this tale tells the bizarre story of Ramon Maria, a balding, middle-aged. trumpet player who wakes up one day with a massive neverending erection. Hailed across Europe as a masterpiece of literary parody, it is bound to be one day seen as the biggest rival yet to Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint.

i have a cure for that endless erection: castration. i've no idea how this won whatever awards.

Can't understand the hype around Monzó. He basically writes about body parts and intercourses, most of which unsatisfactory - although said like this, it sounds quite more interesting than it is. He is trying to be ironic and cynical, but he is just obvious or at best sounds like somebody dressed in a kitschy way who is commenting on the kitschy way other people are dressed in. Anyway, the only thing I can state for sure about this author after 3/4 of this book and some 20 short stories by him, ...more

Though definitely an intriguing mix of ribald humor and bleak morality, this book ultimately feels like a joke carried a bit too far. I much prefer Monzo's short stories which are replete with provocative ideas and strange characters which push a reader from his comfort zone but don't overstay their welcome.

About ironies in life. About misunderstandings, about unsatisfied sexuality, about death.

There is a slapstick-comedy style dirty joke running through Quim Monzo's intriguing book 'The Enormity of The Tragedy". Ramon-Maria, a trumpeter, finally hits lucky with Maria-Eugenia, sex-goddess star of the theatre show where he works. Alas on the first night a combination of over-thinking and booze mean he can't perform. He stares at his limp penis wishing it were different. And next morning it is. Ramon-Maria is erect and ready to make love. He performs faultlessly. He performs again immedi ...more

I read the Catalan version - in fact it was the first Catalan book I read (after a friend recommendeded this author to me)! I think it's one of those authors whose style you love or hate. I fall in the former camp!
