I received this book through Goodreads first reads giveaway.

This is a beautiful book. The crochet trim instructions are for beginner to advanced. They are easy to follow instructions that also include pictures (in color) and diagrams (also in color). There is a crochet refresher course which is helpful for beginners or anyone who has not picked up a crochet hook for a while.

I am left-handed and have not always been able to translate instructions for crocheting left-handed. This book is easy for me to understand and make it work for me. I think even someone who has not crocheted before could follow the instructions in this book.

4 & 1/2 stars:

Caitlin Sainio presents a wide array of thread crochet trims in her new book, "75 Exquisite Trims in Thread Crochet: For Edgings, Corners, Crescents & More." From traditional patterns such as the Simple Chain or Pinapple Lace trims to whimsical and unique designs such as Teddy Bears on Swings or Rainbows, there is sure to be a perfect trim for you, whether new or experienced in crochet work.

The instructions are clear, with foundation rows written out with crochet abbreviations, but the main pattern is written using crochet symbols --no need to fear if you are not familiar with these, as the book contains a symbol chart for easy reference. Every pattern includes instructions for turning outer corners (such as if you were to trim the edge of a table cloth) and for turning inner corners (such as trimming the inside of a square neckline blouse).

There are clever holiday themed designs and ones that would be perfect for children. However, there are also more stylish patterns that teens and adults would be comfortable wearing --perhaps edging a scarf or as another accent. There is also a brief section on project ideas and samples on how to utilize the trims.

As these patterns are designed for thread crochet (with small sized hooks), I'd recommend this book to crocheters who are at least comfortable with the basic crochet stitches and techniques before tackling trims in this book. However, none of the trims look too difficult and should be accessible to intermediate and more experienced crocheters.

The photographs are clear and allow you to easily envision the finished designs. They are so tempting, even to me --someone who rarely uses crochet thread-- that I want to pick up a spool and steel hook and start one now! I look forward to starting one soon...

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads and am excited to keep this as a resource for future projects.

While I've been crocheting for awhile, I haven't worked with thread crochet or made any trimmings before. This book is a great resource for people of all levels looking to complete some new projects and try new crochet challenges. I like that the book provides a brief review of stitches and crochet basics as well. All the patterns, even the advanced ones, are understandable and clearly written. None of the stitches used are very complicated, so it's nice that these patterns use basic stitches that anyone can easily learn. I think that some of the patterns will also provide me with some stitch ideas for regular (not just thread) crochet projects as well--it's nice that the patterns are straightforward and simple and allow for flexibility in how you wish to use them.

One thing I would have liked to be different is the order of some of the patterns. I think it may have been useful to have them grouped together so all the basic patterns are shown first, followed by all the intermediate, then the advanced. The order of patterns isn't a huge issue but might make selecting a trim to try a little easier for those who are not ready to tackle an advanced pattern.

I was fortunate to win this book in a First Reads giveaway. It is an fantastic book, with beautiful photos and excellent instructions on how to crochet 75 different trims, or lace, as some might refer to it. The beginning has very nice instructions, along with illustrations, for someone just beginning to crochet, on most of the major stitches. After the main section, with the instructions for crocheting the trims, is a small section with project ideas - ways to use the trims. The trims themselves range from simple lace patterns, to butterflies, flowers, boats, and even seasonal trims like snowmen and wreaths. The lighting of the photos is perfect, showing intricate detail on the trims. Overall, a very high-quality book!

So many beautiful trims with difficulty levels that seem appropriate . I hate when books say easy and it should say hard. It even starts with a quick lesson in crochet, just in case you have forgotten how to do it and need a refresher.. I will enjoy using these trims.
