Sadly, I'm not at the point of retirement yet, but every five years or so I read a book on retirement because I want to make the most of it when I finally get there.

The Good Retirement Guide is a completely UK-focused detailed reference guide to all things retirement. It covers things like finances, leisure, working in retirement, health and funerals. There is quite a lot of detail on tax, which is useful. Many pages are filled with long lists of organisations you can contact, which is practical but not particularly inspiring to read. Practical is the word I'd use for the whole book in general, and it's probably most useful those who are just retiring or are newly retired. For me, as purely speculative read, it was not terribly relevant but that's not a reflection on the quality of the book.

The guide is tightly packed with information most of which I already knew having read a few finance /retirement books already; but I did find a few new useful morsels. Despite the density of the information I actually thought that the book spread itself too thin and I wanted more depth. Some bits are rather odd inclusions, e.g. food hygiene (with some questionabe suggestions such as washing eggs).

A rather dry read but not a complicated one, and readers who are lucky enough to be retiring imminently may find the guide quite useful.

I know my personal retirement plan will involve finally getting down to some serious reading and reducing all the unread books in the house!

I have only just started reading. Reviews from others make it a promising read. BUT: there are references/signposting throughout the book to a Directory, downloadable from www.koganpage.com/GRG2025 , which I get a 'page not found' error 404 message. Not a good start.
