Godzilla 2000 is the second of four Godzilla novels that Marc Cerasini had published around the end of the century. The title is a little misleading; it has nothing to do with the film of that name, but refers to a video game the protagonist plays, as well as the fact that the novel concludes at the start of that year. Big G shares the stage with an outstanding line-up of co-stars this time around, including Ghidorah, Mothra, Varan, and Rodan. The story centers on a young man named Kip Daniels and his enrollment in a team called G-Force. It's a fine story, lots of fun, and I was humming the Godzilla theme all the way through... in between chomping on the popcorn.

Was here for the kaijus, did not care for the humans. This explains why my interest in the story kept wavering; at this point I would just watch the movies – a heretical stance for an avid reader, I know.

Shout out to my boy Varan, a true icon. Eat, poop, sleep, repeat. Such is his mantra and I strive for this existence.

Thoughts and prayers to my girl Kathleen whose happy ending was to marry Døn@ld Trumpet 🍊💩 This did not age well through the year of our lord 2k25

Pretty good all things considered. Very much leans in to the horror element of some of these Kaiju, some of them are described eating people in truly gruesome detail. I love King Ghidorah so I was very glad that he’s the main antagonist of this book, I thought the setting of Ghidorah and Godzilla’s showdown was in New York City, a very cool place for a Kaiju battle. Loved most of the monster action, and how it felt like the military was actually able to do something every now and then. The human plot was less engaging than the last book, but the monster element makes up for it so I’ll give it a pass. Again I’d probably give 3 stars if this weren’t a Godzilla novel but I thoroughly enjoyed it just for that.

New Years Eve 1999 is approaching and people are reporting more and more monster sightings, including Godzilla.
and people are starting to wonder if it has anything to do with that strange comet approaching the earth.

A great big monster movie of a book, with lots of familiar faces rampaging through various famous landmarks, all leading up to a big monster fight in New York on New Years Eve!

This series was really good at bring back the awe of these huge creatures and showed us how we mere mortals feel when encountering them.

Marc Cerasini plays to his strengths in this exciting action story that makes good use of most of its kaiju, especially Mothra. On the other hand, the Kamacuras and Rodan serve close to no purpose, and the final battle is disappointingly short.

In preparation of the the upcoming "Godzilla vs Kong" movie, I am reading both a Godzilla book and a King Kong book. This is the Godzilla entry.

This book is a follow up to the previous Godzilla book. But this one is ALL over the place.
[Let me advice the reading - this book was written during the last days of the 20th century. So, over 21 years ago. Things are VERY different.]

First, there is the threat of global annihilation from a pair of asteroids hurling towards the earth. (Hmmm - where did I hear about that, back in the late 1990s?)

Then, there is a series of spontaneous monster attacks in the heartland of America. That a meteorite hits the ground, and mutates surrounding insects into huge monsters.

Next, there is the sudden appearance of a hydrogen fueled monster in the Gulf of Mexico, which is causing havoc.

Oh yeah - I forgot to mention the kid who scores an near unbreakable score on a video game who finds himself "drafted" into being a pilot in an advance aircraft, designed to fight a war for the planet. (80's Nerd points if you recognize this plot)

And finally - GODZILLA. But wait - this time, Godzilla comes ashore in San Francisco (which sounds family- just 17 years later). And makes his way across the country. (Ok, side story- as a kid, on top of Spiderman, Superman, and Archie comics, I LOVED reading Marvel's Godzilla comics. And I went back and read the whole series in 2014, before the Monarch Saga of movies began. PArt of the Godzilla comic series finds Godzilla crossing the country, ending up in NYC).

Now, you would think the world would be on edge with THIS many disasters at once. (Look at 2020- pandemic, killer bees, creatures from the wild invading cities that are devoid of people. And remember how we reacted to all THAT!?!?!). But no - it is very low key worries.

After the world launches nukes, to destroy the asteroids (you almost forgot about those), they release yet ANOTHER monster - and this one is the most powerful of them all. And that Bad Boy is now coming to Earth - but not before destroying Mir and a Space shuttle. (Again - I have to wonder if the same gypsy the Simpsons writers visit for their ideas was visited by the author of this book?!!!)

And then we come down to the show down in NYC. Godzilla in one Corner, King Ghidorah in another, and just for fun- hey, It's Mothra. (Oh yeah - I forgot Rodan. Yeah, see, you get so many monsters going on in the book, you end up with the Middle Child syndrome - "Wait, did I forget something?!?!").
Couple of things. First, it dawned on me that the NYC battle was on NYE 1999/ 2000. Basically, less than a year after the Matthew Broderick Godzilla Film came out - where THAT Godzilla also invaded NYC). Second, I did cheer when King Ghidorah took out Trump Tower/ Hotel. (At the time of publishing, this would have been "oh no" to the reader. Now, thanks to Ex PotUS 45, its "YEAH!!! KNOCK THAT DOWN!!!"). Third, when the Army tried to take down Godzilla, they fought in Gary, Indiana. In December 1999, I was living on the city line between Gary and Merrillville, Indiana. Which means that I either would have seen the battle or been loaded up in my truck, with my then wife and a ton of Cats and our dog, fleeing the scene of the battle to come. Sadly, both the destruction of one of the World Trade Center buildings and the loss of a space shuttle are part of the story - again, some of the BIG national sadness we experience in the first 36 months of the new century. Finally, the book has an Afterwards, where things are discussed. Like X PotUS 45 marrying the USAF pilot who flies is private plane while he travels around, trying to rebuild his empire. "Oh look - the OTHER 3rd Mrs Trump. I wonder how well SHE would take learning he was paying to bang some porn star while the 3rd wife is having his child?!?!"

Ok, starting to get snarky. Going to end this.

Good book - a bit dated in some respects and almost taking elements of past movies in making the book. (I'm excluding those events that occurred AFTER the book was published. Cant just an author in the present for something they wrote in the past). Kinda leaves the ending a bit open - what happened to the other monsters? Oh wait- that is why there is 3rd book in the series....

Holy shit...

This. was. bonkers.

America uses a video game to recruit teenagers for the G-Force program.

Graphic depictions of human casualties and gore. Hell, we have one character almost drowning in an ocean of Kaiju excrement complete with half digested corpses.

GODZILLA FIGHTS A TORNADO!

All culminating with a fantastic giant monster battle at...

...the World Trade Center. *oof*

It's a coniacopia of poorly-aged references and ideas as even our boy Donald gets dragged into the situation.

It's pure insanity and I loved it.

This book is pretty bad, but if you ignore the inept writing and storytelling, theres a pretty okay “Americanized” Godzilla screenplay hiding here.

The characters are pretty much non-existent, and the story frequently stops to show off the authors knowledge on military vehicles. The kaiju stuff is what kept me reading. As a long time Godzilla fan, i couldn’t help but read on.

Absolutely nothing special, but if you’re a big Godzilla fan its worth the curiosity. Or if you’re 10 and its 1999.

read its sequel first by mistake
Still held up well.
Same complaint as before though.
Why cant the movies be more like this
and less like, well, many of the ones we
were given.
The little single scenes of "nameless"
characters give the human element to
story. It also shows whats at stake beyond
a monster fight. Honestly those scenes go by
really quick.
I read the epilogue through twice to find out
what happened to everyone.

The book is very well written with great character development and fairly well detailed settings. Cerasini's military knowledge is always on display in his Godzilla books.

Unfortunately, like "Godzilla Vs. The Robot Monsters," the kaiju action is a bit lacking. While we do get more kaiju action, it is briefly covered and many times a kaiju's actions are mentioned in passing without much detail. The final battle, like the book mentioned above, is very short. It's action-packed, but I felt like it ended way too quickly.

Nevertheless, "Godzilla 2000" is good read for any Godzilla fan. Cerasini's prose is setup in a way that the book is very easy to read and the reader will be able to brisk through 100 pages before they even realize it. His writing is well done.

I recommend this to any Godzilla fan.
