This wild and woolly book covers most or all aspects of pro wrestling from the 1800s through the early '70s. Its strongest suit is as an anthology of hilarious road stories and blood-soaked match descriptions, all described by someone who loved them for what they were. Although it came out in the mid-70s, the author's best insider source was his father (Brother Frank, the Mormon Mauler), so most of the material centers on the 1930s and 40s. A dated, semi-kayfabe history of interesting road stories and other as-told-to old wives' tales compiled by SI writer and wrestler's son Joe Jares. A classic of the genre--probably the first halfway decent pro wrestling history since Griffin's Fall Guys.
