Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor, Vol. 23

Rate this book
Collects Thor (1966) #337-348 and Annual (1966) #12 and material from Marvel Fanfare (1982) #13.

Walter Simonson begins his character-redefining THOR run! "DOOM!" With that iconic effect, Walter Simonson shattered all expectations. As both writer and artist, his THOR was nothing short of a revelation - one that has been held up next to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's as the greatest of all time. Simonson's stories instantly establish cosmic stakes and a mastery of the series' characters. As his epic unfolds, he introduces Beta Ray Bill - a hero so bold and true that he can lift Mjolnir - and Malekith, a villain so cunning that he could unleash the Casket of Ancient Winters…and worse! And so the Marvel Masterworks are very proud to begin their presentation of Walter Simonson's MIGHTY THOR, painstakingly restored from his original art and matching the coloring of the original comics!

Here begins Walt Simonson’s incredible, game-changing run on Thor. If you’ve not read this, you’ve not read Thor. Beautiful stuff.

In here you get the first appearances of Beta Ray Bill, Malekith, Algrim (who would become Kurse) and the Enchantress’ sister Lorelei. You also have the shedding of the Don Blake persona and the establishment of Thor’s new secret identity, Sigurd Jarlson. There’s even a guest appearance by Clark Kent and Lois Lane, but don’t tell DC; I don’t want to get Walt in trouble!

The only reason I’ve not given this the full five stars is because this collection also includes an annual that wasn’t done by Walt and… well, it’s not good.

4.7 stars.

Now THIS is what Marvel Masterworks is all about! Brilliant artwork and stories from Walter Simonson as he transformed Thor into the best title that Marvel was then publishing. An absolute gem that everyone should read and thoroughly enjoy.
