I adore James Flora's writing, and this was certainly a cute book, but I think I might have enjoyed it more as a child. As an adult, I found the wizard's antics silly, but not quite in the same way that younger Emmy would have. Still, a really cute book and a good read.
Wanda, an orphan on her way to live with her cousin the queen, rescues a wizard with a literal bag of tricks also on his way to the castle. Why did she have to rescue a wizard? Because he used to play hooky from wizard school so sometimes his tricks don't go quite the way he would like. Can he really serve the king when he bumbles so much? The pictures are old fashioned but cute. This is not brilliant literature, but it is a fun, simple story for those between picture books and chapter books.
