New York's favorite hockey player and bar brawler, Riley Huntington, needs a PR fix—stat—or he'll be kicked off the team for good. Enter Liora James, an ex Olympic figure skater with dreams as big as her heart and a past so dark it might break it.
Desperate to right her wrongs, Liora pins her hopes high on a new TV show called 'Grace on Ice’ where figure skaters team up with celebrities in hopes of winning a million dollars. But to even stand a chance, she needs more than skill on the ice––she needs publicity.
When their managers pair Liora and Riley together to make their goals come true, a fake relationship is their only way out. But with intense sparks flying between them, Liora's past catching up and Riley's image on the line, can they keep their cool, or will they risk losing everything they've ever wanted?
It's that book when you're in the mood for some trashy entertainment. I say that cause it's not a bad book but it isn't good either. The thing that interested me about this book was the cover and am not regretful about that decision. The book wasn't perfect but I had fun. Also, the artwork continues to deliver inside, some in spicy ways 👀🥵
The writing, although humorous, is very juvenile in some places. I believe this is where most people will have issues. The story and characters set up nicely but things happen too conveniently for them. If you want to enjoy this book, you might have to switch your brain off cause thinking rationally will not work with this one lol. Some of the dialogues are quite cringe and the way they think about each other is very Wattpad like writing. The book could have been 40-50 pages shorter.
The characters Riley and Liora are decent but one will forget about them soon. Liora is made to be seen as someone mature, and one with depth. But given her experience in life and at sports, she still manages to come across as immature and naive. One thing I didn't like about her at all was how she was judgemental about Riley and had double standards. Her mood swings with him gave me a headache. Riley is nice but doesn't stand out either. I believe I would have liked him more had he not been so horny all the time. He thought like a teenager who just hit puberty and it bothered me. Other than that, the way he took care of Liora, fought for her, made her feel safe and respected her boundaries do make him better than Liora, who offered him nothing fyi.
The romance is VERY insta lusty/lovey. This is something that hardly ever works for me. I understand attraction but I don't get the need to have sex immediately after first glance. I would have preferred some angst and tension. There are too many cliche scenes which am not gonna bother going over. The chemistry is there between the characters but how do you make that flourish is something that's a crafty skill. There are some cutesy moments which made me blush and giggle a lot. The spice is decent, some dialogues were a bit meh but it's okay I guess.
The ending was sweet. Liora's backstory was kinda predictable. I loved the epilogue tho, it was super cute. I loved how Riley grew as a person throughout the book. Overall, it makes for decent entertainment but could have been much better executed.
~•~•~ Am a simple girl, I see a hot cover and I go for it 😍
I want to start by saying that I believe this is the first book of this author, if we keep this in mind the book is not that bad but I just couldn’t keep reading it.
I was so excited to read this because it has some of my favs tropes and liked the cover at first glance too. The reasons why I didn’t liked this book is based on my preference so I would say that if you have it on your tbr you should give it a try and read it🫶🏻
⤷ my first issue with the book is that both mc’s act like teenagers, the dialogue between them would make more sense if this was a high school romance but no, the guy -Riley- is in his late twenties and the fmc-Liora- is 24 years old. Their interactions were so juvenile that I was rolling my eyes every time they interacted.
they were fighting because she ate his cereal…..
⤷ my second issue is the writing, for me it feels kinda basic (which is not necessarily bad) but it also had too many descriptions that didn’t added anything to the story. So it felt like I was reading bunch of nonsense sentences.
⤷ my third issue is the fmc, I already mentioned that both protagonists exhibit childish behavior, Liora, in particular, is utterly insufferable. she is poor, one step away from being homeless, however, when Riley requires to fake a relationship to fix his public image, his assistant conveniently selects Liora for the role, because of that she is living in his penthouse, doesn’t have to pay a single cent, they even provide her with access to a skating rink so she can rehearse her routines for an upcoming reality show, and she doesn’t need to worry about buying food. Essentially, she is living entirely free of charge. Despite this, Liora inexplicably behaves as though she is the one doing Riley a favor and it’s all like “you’re annoying” “I hate you” while she doesn’t have a valid reason to hate him…
I won’t complain about the smut content of this book, because when I open the book on my phone it clearly states it's "a steamy hockey romance," in the title so I was fully aware of what to expect but oh god, it is too insta lust for my liking.
2 stars because I think that the concept of the book had great potential unfortunately the execution fell short for me

I saw that some of the tropes are fake dating and hockey player x figure skater and I have a weakness for those, so I had to start this book immediately.
This book was probably most definitely one of my favorite books I'd read this year. I wasn't even counting the pages while I was reading 'Rinkmates' - which I do loads of times - I was flying through the (digital) pages. Yes, this was THAT enjoyable, I was hooked from the very first chapter.
An emotional, gripping and very steamy sports romance novel. I'm definitely looking forward to Nova Banks' upcoming works. I would also love if the side characters in this book get their own books.
Tropes: ⛸️ FMC (24) Former Olympic gold medallist figure skater 🏒 MMC (27) re-formed playboy and always finds himself in trouble NY hockey player ⛸️ Black cat x black cat 🏒 Fake dating ⛸️ Forced proximity 🏒 Height difference ⛸️ Enemies to friends to lovers 🏒 Emotional and vulnerable moments between the mc's ⛸️ FMC standing up for MMC and vice versa 🏒 A very interesting twist
_________________________ *Many thanks to Love Notes PR and to the author for providing me an early copy for this book!*
Star player Riley Huntington needs a PR fix--stat. Enter Liora James, an ex Olympic figure skater.
I don't think I need to read the synopsis any further, I need this book STAT.
DNF 11% 2☆ Saw the cover, salivated, and here we are. Unfortunately the h’s judgy POV and irrational hatred of the H were super annoying, and the coincidences were so far-fetched and convenient that I got bored quickly.🙄
It makes me so angry when the author makes the girl poor and out of nowhere she has everything and for free and besides with the guy we expected to be with her, daaaaag! i was mad at this girl because she didn't thank Riley at all, hey can you stop getting mad at everything? , it's too annoying, it promised enemies to lovers, but WTF, i felt like there was no reason, no background, NOTHING
I hate this girl for that damn cereal
Liora's behavior sucked, I didn't like her very much, and besides, their “romance” was too childish, I was bored with the “I love you but I can't” blablablablabla
I'm giving 4 stars to Nova's novel because it has its ups and downs.
I have loved Riley and Liora's relationship. They are actually really cute together. I didn't like the fact she kept one foot out all the time because of her past. She just was not 100% all in the relatioship and this put me off a bit.
I got the twist quite soon and I have to say i didn't like it much because I didn't add a lot to her story. Her past could have been enough without that particular. And it was not that thought out in the end.
Happy release day to this beauty!! I had the opportunity of reading Rinkmates and let me tell you it was such a good story and an amazing debut, loveable characters. Like figure skating x hockey player?? Sign me up Roomates?? Tension?? Spice?? Plot??😮💨😮💨 It was that good that i can’t believe it’s just a debut😮💨😫 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So if you’re looking for a good book that can be read in a couple of hours this one is for you. Happy release day miss @authornovabanks Thank you so much to the author and @lovenotes.pr for the arc🩵
Rinkmates is a sports romance featuring a hockey player trying to repair his bad reputation and an ice skater desperately in need of a place to live. The solution? She fake dates the hot player in exchange for a free room and a much-needed image boost.
As you can tell from my rating, this book didn’t fully convince me. Overall, the story is enjoyable and I flew through it, but several things kept bothering me.
The book started off strong. I was immediately intrigued, but unfortunately, after the initial chapters, the plot started to wander and drag. The more the book went on, the more I couldn’t feel a connection between the characters. Their relationship felt both forced and rushed. They’re attracted to each other from the beginning, which is fine, but there wasn’t much buildup to their actual relationship.
This is a long book, and I don’t think the pacing was handled well. The author introduces several problems and struggles but often seems to forget about them soon after. For example, when Lia is injured by glass shards, she doesn’t rest and instead goes right back to skating. The condition of her feet, despite the severity of the injury, is never really mentioned again. Also, the meeting with her abusive ex and her taking him to court at the end of the book were rushed through without much explanation.
What really made me lower my rating was the plot twist near the end. It didn’t make sense and seemed to be added purely for shock value without actually contributing to the story. Given everything else happening, it wasn’t necessary to throw in yet another "issue."
I really wanted to love it, but in the end it wasn’t for me!
This book was such a good read. Riley and Leora had me hooked, I thought they were perfect for each other both having their own personal struggles but together they’re unmatched. If you love hockey, fake dating, forced proximity a reformed playboy look no further! Go read this book!! 👏🏻
4.5!!! riley and liora were so precious and had the funniest relationship from the start!! their chemistry was off the charts and it was so fun seeing riley turn into the guy he wanted to be for liora 🥹🥹
Ever since I read From Lukov with love I've been on a hunt for more romances that feature ice skating. Considering how much I love it, there's no point in denying it: my expectations are high.
When I came across this book, months ago, it captured my attention immediately. The premise sounded very intriguing, and definitely up my alley. But oh well, turns out the final product wasn't really for me.
I kinda enjoyed reading the first half of the book, it flowed nicely and the things that bothered me were minor. I thought some details felt random and a bit up in the air, but I hoped we would get some more explanations as the story went on. That didn't really happen, in fact we got even more random details and a random twist (not to brag, but I also guessed it so not a really surprising twist either). The plot was a real mess, it’s just a cluster of random things that were supposed to keep the storyline interesting and probably mysterious.
Before I add this last thing, let me preface it by saying this: what I am about to say, it's my personal opinion (just like the rest of this review). But this in particular, it's the way I, personally, felt about this specific detail of the storyline. .
This story is incredible, and I can’t believe this is a debut novel! What’s even more impressive is that English is the author’s second language.
I fell in love with Riley and Liora. The way their friendship developed was so natural and sweet. Their chemistry was palpable, and their temperaments complimented each other so well that I couldn’t help squealing over their happy ending.
The story touches on so many key components in an athlete’s formative years, and their struggles to “make it in the big leagues.” The pressure, the failures, the struggles and emotional toll that all of these things take on a person so young were dealt with in a very sensitive and mindful way, and I really appreciated the author tackling such heavy subject matter with respect.
I highly recommend this book,if you’re in the mood for a slow burn, inspirational story of overcoming one’s circumstances, and the way your life can change when just one person believes in you. 4.5⭐️ 3🌶️
2/5 sigh i saw the cover announcement for this a couple months ago & was excited bc i loveeeee hockey romances but this was so disappointing:(
i don’t even know how to describe it but i was eating the book UPPPPP, but then it just sorta…stopped? it just started feeling like the book was just a compilation of classic romance/sports romance scenarios/tropes/topics yk idk it was just so weird bc I’ve never once felt like a book was overly trope-y, but smth abt this book just felt sooo jumpy to me like it was just trying to hit all the iconic sports romance moments idkkkkk
also whyyyyy is not a single person talking abt how he admits to her being his celeb crush when she was 15 & he was 18? & then getting nervous he maybe shouldn’t have said that bc he “was a hell of a creepy teenager” from chapter 21 ladies & gentlemen: “I remember watching all of your competitions after I found out about you. You were only fifteen, but you were magnificent.” … “I think the reason I get so worked up when I see you in your costume is because it’s become a kink for me.” She leans in. “Did you see my routine in Orleans?” “It lives rent-free in my head.” It was Moulin Rouge themed and the sexiest shit I’ve ever seen.” HELLO????!!!!!!! i cannot be the only person who thinks that’s insane???
anyways i don’t rlly know what else to say other than i just thought this book was bad. don’t get me wrong it sure was entertaining😭but there are so many better books w these tropes out there
also [[spoilerssss]]
i saw the secret baby coming from a mile away & i feel like it didn’t rlly add anything to the plot bc everything was so rushed into the ending
This was a good book to read to break up all my fantasy reads. I love hockey romance so figured I would give this one a try! This is your classic fake dating, falling in love, and HEA and I was very happy that there was no third act breakup.
I wish we got more details with the main conflict with Liora, when she finally tells Riley what happened and why she is in this competition, you’ll immediately want her to get justice. You get a little in the epilogue but I wish there was more.
Overall easy read to get sucked into and I will def read the second one hoping it’s about Riley’s sister…and Jayce 😉
This was so good! I loved Riley and Liora so much! I really enjoyed reading about Liora and watching her stand up for herself and stand up for Riley. There was so much good chemistry and tension between these two that I was devouring this in no time. I thought Riley might end up a major alphahole but he wasn’t. He was such a golden retriever and I love how he stood up for Liora and fought for her.
I really enjoyed how open this book was about the pressures of being a hockey player or figure skater can involve and how these two worked together to move past those pressures. And the spice between these two was perfect. I also enjoyed the glimpses of the side characters we got and I really wanted more of them.
Very good book. I have to say the twists were good and the fact that there was no 3rd act breakup was just the cherry on top. Riley has beem represented all his life as the nepo baby but he's so much more than that. All that he is and conquered was because he worked for it not because of his parents. I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him he was loved. That poor boy. Liora was so strong, with what happened in the past and what was happening in the tv show. The way they were together was so beautiful, I loved them. They supported each other and lifted the other up whenever necessary. The way they both protected the other, God I loved it
A hookey player, a figure skater, fake dating and hate to love? Hell yes, my fav tropes. I loved so much about this. It was funny and the characters (+ side characters) were great. The steamy scenes weren‘t too much and there was an actual plot (happens less and less nowadays in romance books😂) Towards the end it was dragging a little but all in all it was an enjoyable read 😊
This book was so unserious and it wasn't even trying to be. There were a LOT of discrepancies and the writing felt all over the place. The characters, in my opinion, were both great just not fleshed out well.
