This silly ghost story may entertain children, but I was not impressed. Then again, I am not the target demographic, of course.
As stated in the front of the book,"this easy reader contains only 50 different words, repeated often to help the young reader develop word recognition and interest in reading."
With large fonts and only one short sentence on each page, it's a fast read. Perhaps it's more engaging and effective with young children than with middle aged librarians-in-training.
The illustrations are very cartoonish, with plain white backgrounds, pastel colors, and few additional decorative details to convey the concept of a haunted house.
Read this book with one of my students, and we really enjoyed it. It's not really your tradition Halloween story, in that it's more amusing than scary. It's an entertaining story about one little ghost who is goofy, tripping over things and not being able to boo and hiss properly. One day, though, he finds that his particular set of skills comes in handy. I liked it not only because it was a good book with cute illustrations, but mostly because of the positive message it sends about how are differences make us better. I highly recommend it for beginning readers, parents and children, or classroom libraries.
