Firstly, I was drawn to The Battle For Brisingamen by Harmony Kent by the word Brisingamen in its title, having been interested in Norse mythology for a long time. The Brisingamen, otherwise known as the Brising Necklace, was made by dwarf smiths and worn by Freya, the daughter of Njord and Skadi, and sister of Frey, according to the Elder Edda. I think it is wonderful that here in 2013 the name of the necklace of Freya, Brisingamen, can be used as a key to open the door of the world of Norse my ...more

As with most of my recent reads, I found some buzz about this on social media. I did a little research on Brisingamen (and found it was part of Norse mythology), and I had to read it!

Synopsis (from the author): There is a World not too Far Away ...

Beneath the north sea a land of magic lies undetected. The lives of many are drawn inexorably closer together in a race against time, as both energy companies and evil beings attempt to destroy the magic which is protecting not just this land but all

The set-up of this book intrigued me: Strange undersea artifacts, unexplained maritime phenomena, scientists and ship captains as main characters. The book continued to be very imaginative, but it turned more Tolkienesque and lost some of its beginning uniqueness.

I found myself very distracted by the numerous comma splices, especially the ones where the punctuation made it hard to interpret. Example: "The dwarves and Irina were already running at full pelt, feeling useless he followed as fast as

This is the abbreviated version of a joint review I did on this book. For my full review, please click The Review Board.

All of the elements are here for the makings of a wonderful story. The key to these elements is how well they are presented and executed.

The author did a great job with spelling and grammar.

The resolution to this read was also satisfactory, leaving just enough lingering to predict that a sequel may be in this book's future. There was also consistent conflict and very descripti

There are some books that a person reads and knows the novel they’ve read, if it were to hit its market, would be a smash. Brisingamen is one of those novels. Deeply complex and intricately plotted, Kent brings the reader something into which a public can really immerse themselves and come out feeling as though they’ve read they’ve learned something. If you think this means I loved the novel, you would be wrong. It could be the time in which I read but I found myself somewhat confused while read ...more

Harmony Kent has brought a complex, fast-paced, delightful adventure to life with "the Battle for Brisingamen". The story is woven from threads of modern and ancient times, of lands above and below the North Sea, and characters of many worlds and wonders. I'm reminded of characters and places in Tolkien's trilogy of Middle Earth, Rowling's Harry Potter, and Stephanie Meyers' Twilight Series throughout the novel. The action is quick, moving rapidly between time, places and characters. A patient r ...more

I love a good fantasy book, especially one that contains: elves, dwarves, vampires, werewolves and dragons like this one does. “The Battle for Brisingamen” starts with two main characters and what I thought was a love story. It quickly went from that to an adventure that never lets up. Ms. Kent takes us into a magical world that is hidden from most humans or Doggerland. The story line draws us into a battle while questing for Brisingamen through several points of view. I really had to focus to k ...more

Great review for the author. I was pulled in with the hidden treasure effect from the beginning. The book has a detailed plot that takes you to places only your imagination can.

The underlying message centers around sacrifice for the good of all. The characters are well developed and tend to make you root for them or not.

Overall, I found myself totally immersed in the characters and what they were going through. Heartbreak, sadness, excitement...it had it all.

Great action, adventure novel for t

A truly brilliant piece of writing! The first three chapters really draw you in. Smiles.

I have to say that this isn't my usual genre.. I'm more of a legal thriller kind of girl..

So I was pleasantly surprised with how enthralled this fabulous novel kept me!
Way to go Harmony with your first book - I am so looking forward to your next one!

Epic story, above and below the waves.

This is a complex tale that begins with Aart, a Dutch fisherman finding an ancient jawbone that scientist Dirck believes could come from Atlantis. When he and his assistant Gemma go missing, they stumble cross a magical world that draws them into a battle between mythological creatures, oil drilling companies and gods and goddesses craving the power of the necklace Brisingamen.

It works well as an episodic fantasy story, and fans of the genre will really enjo

What you don't know CAN hurt you

Trouble is brewing beneath the surface of the North Sea. Unbeknownst to those “up on top,” an entire world of magic has been hidden under the sea for hundreds if not thousands of years. Now a plot is coming to fruition that has the potential to destroy the source of life itself, both above and below the surface. Compounding their own problems, the undersea world is also threatened by the eminent drilling for oil from the surface world.

This book has all my favorit
