The author stays true to the characters in this series yet offers an insight not shown in the TV show. The subject matter of this story, the history, the scenery are all well-developed and moves along quickly. A quick read, yet heavy enough for an adult reader. The majority of the novel takes place in San Francisco and its Chinatown. Deals with issues of slavery, prostitution, some violence but isn't gratuitous or graphic. Hoss is the central character of this book of the series and is portrayed just like you would want to remember him, down to the language, dad-blame-it. If you enjoyed the TV series, read the novels for a walk down memory lane.
