Up Your HOA Hole

Rate this book
In the seemingly idyllic community of Sterling Winds, Gwendolyn Thornton, the unwavering Homeowners Association (HOA) President, maintains a facade of order and serenity. Beneath the manicured lawns and elegant facades, however, lies a brewing storm of tension and discord.

As the gatekeepers of the neighborhood's pristine image, Gwendolyn and the HOA navigate the delicate balance of maintaining the community's outward charm while grappling with the clash of personalities among its residents. The arrival of Preston and Carter Higgins, Sterling Winds' first openly gay couple, disrupts the established norms, exposing the underlying prejudices and biases that simmer just below the surface.

In a community where appearances are everything, not everyone welcomes the Higgins with open arms. From high-strung personalities to ruthless neighbors, the once-tranquil Sterling Winds becomes a battleground of egos, secrets, and suburban drama. Gwendolyn finds herself torn between upholding the neighborhood's image and fostering a more inclusive environment.

Amid the perfectly trimmed hedges and picturesque streets, Up Your HOA Hole explores the struggle for acceptance, the price of conformity, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of societal expectations. Will Sterling Winds weather the storm of transformation, or will the facade of perfection shatter under the weight of its residents' conflicting desires?

Thanks to NetGalley for my copy of this book (Meg are you proud?) This book was really fun and easy to read. Some of the characters were a bit boring at times, but the others made up for it. My only criticism is that it is clearly described as a queer novel although the queer characters weren’t heavily featured until about 3/4 through the book. The author spent more time developing the neighbors in this community, as opposed to showing us who Carter and Preston Higgins were. Otherwise it was a great book & a good summer read!

A complimentary copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Full disclosure, I only read this because of the title. I sooooooooo know that feeling. Also, I am kind of ranting below, with some very choice words thrown in so if you are offended by this, don't read it.

This started off okay, and I was doing good with learning about the community and neighbors. The HOA crap was really annoying, mostly because I've lived in a community with an HOA and they are a nightmare (don't do it!!!), and this community was extremely over the top and crappy. No thanks. So that was not to my liking, but that's not a fault of the book, it's actually a plus because it captured HOA's well (they stink!). But it was still annoying to be reminded of how crap they are. :)

I have several issues with this book, one of which is the wording choices. Instead of using contractions, it was the two words separately. Instead of "wasn't", it was "was not," things like that. People don't speak that way - we use contractions all the time in the real world and to read without it and believe this is how the people were really speaking, it was hard to get through some of those.

Next on my issues list is how over the top this community is. Like, come on!!! I barely knew my neighbors when I lived in an HOA. Mostly because I am an antisocial bookworm, but still. I would not care if I wasn't invited to a neighbors party, or was otherwise left out. Wouldn't have attended anyway. But in this neighborhood, all things are taken personally. Yikes!

And now, to the biggest of big issues. Carter and Preston have a fight, and not just a disagreement, an actual fight that was implied could have hurt their relationship. I don't think this is how a partner would react to learning the truth, which I'm getting to, and I really struggled with this and had some serious sighing events over it. Here is what happened: Yes, all of this bothered me.

How it ended is my final issue. The ending is so anti-climatic.

Lots of ranting there, so basically read at your own risk. :)

I know it seems like this was a horrible book, but as a whole it was fine. I would have preferred things been done differently, but I give great kudos to the author for writing, finishing, and publishing. Not an easy feat. A job well done for all of that!

While the book didn't live up to the spectacularness of the title, I don't think I will forget the story behind it.

2 stars for the story, 5 stars for the title and for that reason alone you should read it. :) Just don't expect to be blown away. My opinion. ;)

There is a media frenzy awaiting Gwen on her arrival back to Sterling Winds. As the president of the HOA she has cut her well needed family holiday short as duty calls! But how did we get here?

Well it all started when Sterling Winds received their first gay residents in this exclusive, picture perfect neighbourhood. As Preston and Carter settle into life in Sterling Winds, they find that not everyone is welcoming of them. They also discover secrets and power dynamics aplenty!

This was a lot of fun. Think Desperate Housewives and you would be right on the money.

The story starts with Gwen returning to the media frenzy, and then takes us back in time to Preston and Carters arrival. Each chapter is told from the POV of one of the residents of the neighbourhood. As you read through each of the events, you gain different perspectives of the neighbourhood dynamics. You learn about the motivations and the drivers behind each.

It really makes you laugh at how something so small could be such a mountain for the residents. How they constantly try to one up each other, or how they try to bend the rules for their own gains, or simply because they have nothing better to do with their time.

I tore through this because of how fun it was. I really loved each of the characters in their own ways, except the Conrad’s, they deserve everything they have coming for them 😂

Definitely recommend this one from @bjirons if you’re on the look out for a fun weekend or holiday read. (Also Christina Hendricks to play Gwen in the TV adaptation please 😂)

This story is a sitcom in book form. There are a lot of characters who's lives all intertwine in the Sterling Winds neighborhood. Gwen is the president of the HOA and her life seems perfect but the drama of the neighborhood tells a different story. Each character has secrets and they all love to gossip with each other and about each other.

I had no problem keeping up with everything going on and the story followed a short timeline. I would have liked a bit more drama with the resolution at the end but the ending stayed in line with story overall.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Despite the bad (bad!) AI cover, I was instantly drawn to the punny title (I'm a simple girl) and premise. And it was everything I wanted it to be! Until it fell apart a little bit...

I was enthralled by the drama during the first third of the novel; I loved the twists and turns the book was taking. Women being catty? Juicy gossip? Sign me up! I also enjoyed the cast rotation and 'slice-of-life' feel to it (for example, there are several 'one-off' chapters from the POV of residents we never see again—which makes the neighbourhood feel so much more lifelike). The writing was accessible and the author managed quite the feat by making the very large cast memorable by name, so that you never actually feel lost while following the characters around.

However, as I read further, the momentum began to wane. The plot, which initially promised so much, seemed to stall; I'd have loved to see escalation of the various situations brought up during the first half. The ending also fell flat for me; my goodwill for the book had dwindled by then, and I found myself increasingly frustrated by its few flaws and slower pace. The writing also lost its utilitarian quality and slipped into lazy territory. There are typos, a lot of repetition, the narrator jumps from head to head, and finally, the fact the prologue is copy-pasted as is in the climax irked me.

Despite these complaints, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the quirky neighbours in the first part. I just wish the story had maintained its initial spark and delivered more of those giggle-worthy twists!

I'm DNF'ing this book! I will give feedback for what I read. I believe Gwen the HOA president was supposed to be an anal retentive type A control freak whose main purpose is to be the best. From what I read, I believed she loved her community & was open to diversity i.e. LGBTQ and BIPOC in their community. However, not all felt this way. Gwen's old widow neighbor was over the top & in a silent competition with Gwen. Gwen's husband from what i read seemed far to passive & seemed to rely on Gwen for everything. I was beginning to wonder if this was just a facade on his part. After reading the part where the gay couple are welcomed to the neighborhood is when I started to feel bothered. I identify as queer & it felt like any gay stereotype was being used w this couple.
Instead of the antics being funny they were annoying. The story just started to get in my nerves so i chose to DNF.

This book was just not for me. I loved the idea of this book.
Thank you to the publisher for an E-ARC of this book.

Gwendolyn Thornton, the President of the Home Owners Association in the rapidly-appreciating property enclave of Sterling Winds, prides herself on running the association with a certain flair. She also fancies herself as a political Independent, whereas the area is quite conservative.

Hence, she is determined to ensure that the first gay couple in the neighbourhood is easily assimilated into the community. Unfortunately, in this gossipy, clique-ridden group of residents, things don't quite go according to plan...

I really wanted to like this book, but I found it unexciting. It was predicated on a single idea ("the new couple are gay!!!"), and the writing was pretty pedestrian, with strange errors in tense use and phrasing. I gather that many people liked the story, so I think maybe it was just not for me. The portrayal of the petty politics of the HOA seems accurate enough!

What a nightmare of a community to live in! It’s not often I read a book and don’t like a single character, but this one did it. I did like the gay couple until the very end, but didn’t like that they backed down and let the HOA win.

I went into it hoping to love it, and ended up thinking it was just okay. But it was an easy read that I did enjoy. I think it might have saved it for me if there had been one single character I liked and got attached to.

Some of the characters didn’t really seem necessary, like they got mentioned a couple times but didn’t play a part in the story. I also didn’t love how the characters were re-introduced nearly every time they were mentioned. The writing style just kind of bumped me a little.

Overall, I think this was a fun read. A nice break from the darker stories I gravitate toward.

Real life is stranger than fiction….
With an unholy host of colorful characters, BJ Irons deftly weaves together the disparate and desperate storylines of strangers-turned-neighbors in his newest novel, “Up Your HOA Hole.” Although the premise is simple – daily life within an idyllic, suburban community – the twists and turns of the plot are as spicy and potent as one of Gwen Thornton’s specialty cocktails. As president of the Home Owners’ Association, life in Sterling Winds blows along just as Gwen has planned until a cruel twist proves to her that rules are made to be broken. Catty and conniving in the best possible way, Irons uses the virtues and vices of an ordinary neighborhood to create the perfect summer read!

I recieved a free eARC of this book. Thank you for the opportunity to read it.

I admit, I chose a house in a non-HOA neighborhood, and this book shows admirably why. If you like books that are talking about behind the scenes backstabbing and negotiations of the upper middle class, you'll probably like this one"

. It's funny and a nice light read, and I suspect would make a good "beach book", and it filled time on an airplane, but that's all it is, and I can't help but feel that life would be better if no one was telling you what color to paint your mailbox, that you can't have a Virgin Mary Statue, or that you can't fly a Pride flag. Having said that, not all books need to be earthshaking.

This was a fun, quick read with a lot of sass and neighborhood drama. Up Your HOA Hole doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it easy to get swept up in the ridiculousness of HOA politics gone totally off the rails. There are some genuinely funny moments and plenty of petty chaos to keep things moving.

The main character’s journey from frustrated neighbor to full-on HOA warrior was entertaining, and there’s a nice layer of queerness and found family in the mix, too. That said, some of the story felt a bit over-the-top at times, and I found myself wanting just a little more depth in a few places.

Overall, if you’re in the mood for something playful, dramatic, and a little bit petty, this is a good pick. Light, campy fun.

A couple looks for a house, finds one and thinks that they have landed in a place where they can find peace, tranquility and set down some roots. And then they start getting to know their neighbors and things get interesting. The homeowner's association is often the group that gives people pause when considering where they want to live and boy did that show itself in this story. It was a hoot and a little bracing as well. The story overall was fun, illuminating and filled with an interesting look at the people in this neighborhood above and below the surface of what you see from the outside. This was seriously cool.

Big Little Lies if every interaction was in the walking-on-eggshells environment of rich people with nothing better to do but fake exuberant humility and kindness. also, no murder. perfect read for people who love to be a hater. if the most popular person in your neighborhood was the one who fined you for painting your mailbox a slightly-too-blue shade of gray to be within guidelines, just imagine what kind of a nightmare these people are as a collective. as someone who clearly loves to be a hater, i ate it up.

3.75 stars! I was laughing so much during this - the drama was DRAMAAAA and I was so here for it.

There were some very important themes in this book along with the hilarity and outrageousness and it was a great way to kick off pride month with this book, focusing on the first gay couple to live in Sterling Winds (think gated community vibes).

I don’t often love multiple POVs when they focus on more than 2 people BUT this was a pleasant surprise! I really loved getting inside the minds of so many different characters of Sterling Winds. They were crazy and hilarious!!

So glad I found this one on NetGalley and decided to download :)

Giving this book 3.5 stars.
The book was so full of drama. So if you like that kind of book this one is for you. This book was about a little neighborhood that had a strict HOA and a pretty straight forward style of rules that had to be followed. This book will also keep you on your toes throughout the entire book.
I didn’t really like how much this book went back and forth between different characters. I believe all the characters of this book were important but having every single characters perspective was a bit too much. It was a good read but it could have been a bit shorter.

This was a fun, quick book and the title really sucked me in. I know that this is not my usual genre, but I thought I'd try something different than my usual horror and magical realism. I liked parts of it, but I feel like it wasn't fully fleshed out. I did enjoy the characters, but I was hoping it would have more humor. I get that it was satirical, but I was hoping to at least a few chuckles out of it based on the title. It was quick and fun and I liked getting into the heads of the characters.

Fun and original, I liked the premise and the writing has a unique soap opera style to it that fits the craziness of the HOA members. The home owners of Sterling Winds are very much in each other’s business which brings both humor and pettiness to the story. It’s a cool idea and well executed overall, just maybe just too much melodrama for my personal taste and I would have enjoyed a clearer resolution to the drama a law suit.

No one writes stories about communities and all the dramas that unfold in them like B.J. Irons does. All the characters come to life with all their good points and bad points and their interactions reveal all kinds of secrets, hidden agendas and complicated relationships. If you were a fan of the multi-character series from the 80s like Knot's Landing, Melrose Place, etc. you need to read this book and check out the author's backlist for more great reading.

B.J. irons has created a world where everything is perfect, until it isn’t. On the outside, the lives of the residents of Sterling Winds seems ideal, but brewing just beneath the surface, there’s a sticky web of jealousy, lies, and deception. Written from the perspective of each member of the close-knit community, Irons shows the best and worst of suburban living. Great story and great characters make for a page-turning novel that is a guilty pleasure to read!

I really wanted to love this, but… I didn't.

A HOA dispute between neighbours and the new gay couple sounded juicy and interesting!

But unfortunately I found it slow, tedious and, meh.

I think it could have worked better with less character POVs and with more fleshing out of the core characters. I don't feel like I really knew too much about them. It was quite superficial.

???

The writing is good & the subject was promising. The stories related were, at times, really funny. However, I kept waiting for the story to blossom into a book with some purpose besides promoting the gay community. If there had been true discrimination I could see a purpose. Such a weak accusation & readily available proof showing equal treatment destroyed the storyline. To me, this looks like a lead in for a very weak cliff hanger.

This was Desperate Housewives meets the HOA board, with all the drama and crazy there is in subdivisions all over. While reading this I kept laughing and thinking about how close to home this book really hits with all the crazy things that HOA’s do, but also how crazy people can get in your neighborhood.

BJ Irons crafts an in depth look at what goes on in a quiet iddylic enclave governed by a stern rule follower that would rival any robot Stepford Wife or most devious Desperate Housewife.

Mix in a newly inducted gay couple, a sprinkling of old bitties and Bible beaters and top it off with a crumbling house of cards and you have this entertaining romp.

To start off with, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this book. What I did get was a full day of laughs and full of drama,I mean seriously. I thought my HOA was crazy and trust me it is but boy this HOA beat it by a mile. I could totally imagine the community with large houses that are kept perfect and well kept lawns to where not a blade of grass is out of place. I felt like it was a mixture of Neighborhood Wars and Desperate Housewives but with a lot more craziness. All the different couples, never knowing what you were going to get and everybody in each other’s business but an entire community full of secrets. I just had to keep reading because I was pulled into the drama and wanted to know the secrets too. This needs to be a TV show.

An ideal place where everyone seems to be having the best of their lives. Things will change when an open gay couple comes to the village. This will make things more interesting as secrets are revealed and the lives are not as idea as they wanted everyone to believe. How will it all go? Can live get better? Will the secrets ruin everything in the village? See just what is going to happen

Suburban Lifestyle With Homeowner Association Groups Have Always Fascinated Me When I’ve Seen Them In Any Form Of Media. I Just Love Seeing How As Grown Ups These People Almost Naturally Revert Back Into High School Mentality With The Forming Of Cliques And Drama Which Can Only Be Described As Petty. The Moment I Saw Bj Irons New Release Was Following A M/M Couple Moving Into A Neighbourhood Like This I Was Absolutely Solved & Said Bring On The Games 🤣😂

I Am Going To Just Start Off Immediately By Saying I LOVED This Book So Much. This Truly Was An Instance Of Being Invested In A Book From Page One. Having Read BJ’s Previous Works I Knew This Was A Writing Style That Was Both Familiar To Me And One I Felt At Ease Devouring. It Truly Felt Like I Was Hearing A Friend Tell Me Juicy Gossip From Their Neighbourhood. If You Are Someone That Likes Your Contemporary Or Romance Books To Feel Very Conversational Then BJ Irons Is Definitely An Author You Should Pick Up! 🤩

When Books Are Told In Multiple Points I Find It Can Either Make Or Break My Love For A Book & It’s Pacing. This Is A Fantastic Example Of How Multiple POVs Can Work Enhancing A Story & Plot. As This Book Is Told Through One Neighbourhood & It Is Brimming With Gossips & Rumours Having Multiple Characters Insight Really Allows Us As The Reader To Get A Fuller & Truer View. Can I Say I Loved Each Character & Their POV? No, However Even The Characters I Disliked Were So Developed And Progress The Story Further I Was Hooked! 😍

Want A Story That Is Fast Paced, Witty & Full Of Soap Opera Worthy Drama I Cannot Recommend Up Your HOA Hole Enough! 🥰

Whew chiii'le I just couldn't, I like my peace of mine/mind too much. IDC for ppl approved in any fashion to buy into this type of foolishness. All the characters signed, sealed, and delivered their own fate and misery when they decide to live in HOA communities. The storyline wasn't funny, it was narcissistic and sociopathic at best. But what I've seen online about it, it's true SMDH.🤦🏾‍♂️

I loved the drama and guilty read aspect of this book.
My issue was lack of sex between the Higgins husbands. They have several sensual scenes - yet it seems their sex takes place off the page. The other couples in sensual scenes have sex - some are detailed, others are not but not cut off.
