Let me preface by saying that I think Kimberly Cates is a talented author. I enjoyed her book Morning Song, so I decided to try Crown of Dreams. The difference being - the characters in Morning Song actually had the opportunity to develop feelings towards one another. I can understand Myles pining for Devlin (who names a heroin Devlin?) and being in love with her for years. But the deep seated hatred Dev expressed for Myles for about the first half of the book made it hard for me to believe she instantaneously discovered her earth shattering love for him after one night... albeit their wedding night. There was just no time for them to explore this new, finally mutual, love interest for it to be believable.

Also, you will never read the words 'magic' and 'dreams' more in your whole life. I get it - Crown of Dreams is the title. But I literally could have played a drinking game with the amount of times those words were used.

Bottom line is, this book was alright. However, if you're set on reading a Kimberly Cates novel, this isn't where I would start.

Couldn't put this book down and had to read it in one sitting! I love how the magic and backstories were weaved so intricately within the entire book! :)

The handsome, muscular, heroic and charming Lord Myles Farringdon and the argumentative, intelligent, oustpoken and beautiful Devlin Chastain, have known each other since Devlin came to live at Myles's family home when she was very young and they have fought like cat and dog ever since!
Myles is the golden boy hero, who is loved and admired by everyone and Devlin is unloved by her mother and others around her, so she puts up a prickly wall protecting herself, from her loneliness and despair. Everything about Myles irritates her, his winning smile, his practical jokes, but the frustration works both ways between the two..... therefore, could this frustration really be something else between them? This all comes to a head when Devlin is set to marry the Honourable Braden Tracey.
A set of events spiral out of control and whilst on this dangerous and frightening adventure, they realise that they both love each other.
Devlin is afraid to show her true self and her true feelings, as she has been let down so many times in the past. Myles knows that Devlin has been ignored and treated badly, but how can he bring this beautiful woman forward, so that she will open her heart to him and embrace the life he wants to share with her.
From the first few paragraphs, this story unfolds, filled with humour, plots, love and passion, twists and turns abound!
But for me, it is the way Kimberly explains how life would have been at that time, both historically and factually. It is the way she describes the fruitlessness of war, the waste of young lives, when these innocent young men are coaxed into fighting for a glory that doesn't exist, only to be left on the battle field injured or dying in utter despair.
This romantic and passionate adventure is full of wonderful characters, which help to make this a very special love story. I adored this book!

Interesting read

This story tells of how Myles and Devin grow up with constant contention between themselves. As the story unfolds we see how the actions of one mother towards her daughter was a major influence. Meanwhile things get very complicated when Myles decides to fight for Charles Stuart which eventually takes him to that fatal battle Culloden Moor. What happens after that goes on to answer things Myles questioned from past situations.
This book highlights not just the cruelty and injustice of war but also how nothing really changes for the common man who fought to their death for their supposed rightful “sovereigns”.

Wonderful romance, we two unlikely lovers. You need to be patient with them until they FINALLY discover they have loved each other since childhood. Highlight is an exquisitely written love scene on their wedding night.

For those of you who have read Gather the Stars and Angel's Fall (book 1 and 2 of the Culloden Fire series) you are given a bit more insight into Gavin and Adam prior to the battle of Culloden.

Kimberly Cates delivers everything I want from historical romance. Myles and Devlin may have thought they knew each other from growing up together, but when a rash moment sends them off into exile, that's when things kick up a few levels. There's also the small matter of Devlin's betrothed to Myles's best friend, wars past and present, the ache of loss and betrayal, and, above all, the hope that only love can bring.

I've always loved stories involving Scotland.

We all have dreams! Most we never understand... I love the story of Myles and Devlin. The dreams of the Scotland before, during, and after the horrors of Colloden Moor. This story is woven intricately around friends, enemies, and lovers.

Wow

Superbly written. This book has plenty of twists and turns. An unlikely and steamy romance develops amidst the turmoil of the second Jacobite rising. I love the detail in this story. So many books rush the ending and this one took time to fully develop the story of which I am incredibly appreciative. Thank you for the good read!

Really enjoyed this

They'd grown up together but only got to know each other when she was nearly married to another. The story explores dreamers and realists, and the power of ordinary magic such as appreciating the small wonders around us, hoping and loving. I like how the husband imparts dreams to this wife and she later draws on them to heal his spirit when he is disillusioned.

Dreams can be true

It took me a few chapters to realize this installment in the Culloden's Fire series takes place in time before and right up to the timeline of books 1 & 2. It was a great story.....Childhood nemesis to lover. Also , war is an awful being. No one escapes unscathed but can be overcome with love.

This is one of the best books I have ever read!

I am reading the series and, of the three, this one is the most magical. Kimberly Cates weaves a wonderful story that draws the reader in until they feel as if they are part of the story. She doesn't spit out books without thought. I look forward to the next book.

CROWN OF DREAMS: is a great read. Beginnings of the book take some explanation and stall the story. Once you get into MYLES and DEVLIN the romance and adventure begin. My favorite part of the book is the writing ! I loved the flow of grace and charm throughout. Oh yes, we have troubles and villains…. Enjoy.

Get the tissues ready

A very well written historical novel with characters you will love, plenty of action, betrayal, forgiveness of sorts, and an emotional rollercoaster. Very enjoyable.

Too long

I don't know quite how to describe. It is exceedingly long, and boring at times, and Devlin is a witch for nearly half of the book. Myles was too much of a dreamer, which brings all kinds of trouble. Overall I enjoyed the ending, but getting there was a chore.

Great book

Another great book in this series but this should have been the first book. As I read the first two this one was the beginning of the story so I felt cheated that I knew of some things to come but also learned alot from this book.

Friends or Foes?

One of the most intriguing books I have read. This is truly a book you won't be able to put down. So have enough leisure time on hand before you begin to read.
Truly a book about knights rescuing damsels in distress!

Enjoyable

This book is actually before the first book. At times the enmity between the two main characters seems as though it would be impossible for them to ever be in a good relationship.

Loved the interaction between Devlin n Myles. Their bickering made me laugh. The way they showed their love for each other was touching and Devlin trying to help Myles Thru the trauma of Culloden Moors was heart breaking.

Crown of Dreams

I loved the characters, Dev and Myles. Cates painted such a clear picture of them, both physically and personality wise. The story pulled a lot of historical events in as well.
