The Walking in Grace (formerly Daily Guideposts) devotionals are always a mixed bag. The majority of the readings are what I could call "warm and fuzzy," but every now and then, one of them takes me by surprise and really "rocks my world."
I have my favorite writers in these books, and some that I don't care for at all. And at least one of those writers has, over time, moved from the "don't care for" category to one of my favorites.
With some of the authors, we get deep, heartfelt, emotional writings that delve into the depths of their pain and heartache, whether it be spiritual or physical. With others we get examples of their somewhat privileged lifestyles, with which I find it impossible to relate. But throughout the year, there are always a handful of them that really resonate with me, so it's worth reading.
One thing I do like is the pages at the end of each month that are set aside for writing single-line reflections. Sometimes I only write one word there. I also like the section at the end of the book that gives us a glimpse into the world of all of the writers that appear in the pages of the book.
I do believe that they could do a better job of editing. Every so often, at the bottom of the page, in the "Digging Deeper" section, a nonexistent Scripture reference appears. That always leaves me scratching my head.
I recommend this, though, for anyone interested in an easy-read devotional that doesn't take much thought to get through.
