This book is about the life of Cesar Chavez and his efforts to help farmers from around the country. Having come from working on the farm himself, he knows what it is like to get down and dirty, but he also wanted to make sure farmers and workers were being treated fairly and with respect. If farmers failed to do that, Chavez would lead protests or strikes to help the workers get what they needed.

This is a biography that outlines the life and achievements of Cesar Chavez from his youth to death. Cesar lived in Arizona but he and his family moved to California during the Great Depression to find work. The Chavez family worked on farms in California under bad conditions. Cesar formed the first farming labor union.

The book was realistic and factual. An added benefit for children was that the book adds explanations certain concepts that children may not be familiar with such as labor unions and slavery. The followed the typical biography chronological outline and contained plenty of interesting facts to hold a child's attention. I would recommend this book for children, especially in rural areas and farming communities. It is a great story of rising up and achieving greatness while overcoming adversity.

This book is about Cesar Chavez. His main goal was to help farm workers. He stared a union called United Farm Workers. He was born in Arizona on March 31, 1927. He knew what it was like for farmers and how rough life could be. When he was younger he worked on a farm in Mexico where he was treated like a slave. Cesar's family was affected during the great depression and lost their farm and store in 1937. Since this happened they moved to California to find work, which led to the farmers. In 1952 he started working for the Community Service Organization. He then quit this job to help create a union for the farmers. He led many strikes and boycotts, which some were successful. He worked for the union the rest of his life. Cesar was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Lots of good info on Chavez, but extremely boring. Nothing whatsoever to hold the attention of a child or even an adult, besides maybe the pictures, but even those are in black and white. They could have done a much better job than this lucklaster attempt at a biography.

The children's book is well written. We didn't have to wait till the middle or end to figure out what Cesar Chavez did in his life. The author let us know right away in three paragraphs, then went into his childhood and into the life he lived as an activist. Every page had a heading and each page was summarized by a sentence that summed up the important point the author was wanting to convey about Cesar. I loved the style of the book and would recommend it for any school age child to learn more about Cesar Chavez.
