It's understandable that some children appear bored or distracted during sacrament meeting. Many young Latter-day Saints are probably unsure about the true meaning of the sacrament and why we attend. With this in mind, bestselling author John Bytheway has composed a delightful poem (inspired by a short poem by Walter H. Horne) to help Latter-day Saints young and old apprec ...more

This is a poem about a young boy who goes to visit his grandpa. They have lots of fun and when Sunday comes, it's time to go to church. He's not very enthused about this and while he's sitting in Sacrament Meeting, obviously bored, his grandpa, whispering, tells him a story of when he was young and how he came to appreciate the sacrament. This leads the boy to reflect on the covenants he made when he was baptized and how he can improve his behavior during the sacrament.

This is a great book for y

This is an excellent teaching tool for children on the sacred meaning of the sacrament. It's easy to get distracted during sacrament meeting, children and adults alike, as this book pointed out. Such wondering of thoughts makes one forget the reason for the ordinance.  This book through verse did the trick for getting across the understanding of who the focus should be on.  It reminds the reader that the reason for reverence is Jesus.

I take my three children to church with me each Sunday and at

Sacrament meeting is such a tricky time when you have young children and as a mother I am always grateful for books that help make it easier. The Sacrament by John Bytheway explains the importance of remembering the Savior and the covenants we make at baptism in words and illustrations children will understand. The story of a young boy staying at his grandpa's house who feels bored in the chapel while the bread and water comes around. Grandpa describes that he once felt the same way, but as he l ...more

I loved how this book teaches a concept that is hard to implement with children. A young boy is visiting his Grandfather. He is having a wonderful vacation full of activities that includes picnics, fishing, and star gazing. He was surprised to discover that he had to go to Church on vacation.

At church he is easily distracted and would rather be sleeping. His grandfather picking up on the the clues shares with him a story from when he was young. The grandfather's story is one that is applicable t

A beautiful book that nicely illustrates the importance of taking the sacrament. This ordinance is an important part of worship in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). The story reminds the reader that while it is easy to get distracted in church, it's important to pay attention to the reasons for being there. The story revolves around a young boy who goes to church with his grandpa while on vacation and who struggles to stay awake and focused. Then his grandpa gently teach ...more

An AMAZING book about the ordinance of the Sacrament!

Beautifully illustrated!
Wonderfully told in poetry form!

A young boy goes to visit his grandparents.

While attending church with them he finds his mind and attention wandering especially during the Sacrament.

His grandfather lovingly shares with him about the time he was a young boy and how he

"...couldn't help but wonder what the Lord Himself would say,

Should He walk into the chapel while His Saints behaved this way."

Through this the boy learns t

This is an excellent children's book! John Bytheway's story is such a great reminder about why members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints take the sacrament on a weekly basis. I love the lesson the grandfather taught about focusing on what is important, and not getting distracted by everything else around us during this sacred time each week. I also really liked the section at the end that tells about the symbols of the sacrament. It is so important to understand why we do things ...more

A useful and well-written book for teaching about the importance and symbolism of the sacrament. This is one of those children's books that aims to teach adults and children alike. I was concerned that some of the examples of distractions from reverence during the sacrament were too adult to register well with my young children (e.g., a woman envying the hairdo of her neighbor, a girl interested in one of the teachers preparing the sacrament, and a man focused on his checkbook), but the overall ...more

This is a beautiful poem with wonderful illustrations about a little boy who is on vacation and has to go to his grandfather's church service. He's bored and easily distracted until his grandfather gives him some good advice we can all ponder during the sacrament. It was an easy verse, but had lots of things to ponder and talk about. In the back there was an explanation of what each symbol of the sacrament meant (bread, water, white tablecloth, etc.) that could be used for a Family Home Evening ...more

This book came at a perfect time for our family. We have been working hard to be more reverent during the Sacrament, but really focusing our thoughts on the Savior sometimes doesn't happen as my husband and 15yo help administer and pass the sacrament and the 11yo tries to help me keep the little men quiet. This book really made a difference for all of us through the sweet story with the author's grandpa and the beautiful pictures. I think it would make a fabulous gift for anyone and especially f ...more

I bought this for my son who was just baptized in January. GREAT BOOK! It holds the attention of him and my 4 year old. Hopefully the message will sink in.

THANKS, John Bytheway - for giving us 2 heroes: Grandpa, who teaches such a great lesson, and Christ who is the ultimate hero!!

The illustrations are also great.
