3 1/2 stars. An entertaining, fast-paced summer read. It is a bit mystery-lite, or at least investigating-lite. The characters and their lives (and the cats antics) take up more time than the mystery. However, the mystery ties in well and even adds some flavor to the lives of Katz' great-aunt and uncle. It's just fun.

I feel the writing of this one is improved over the first book in the series. Fun, quick read. Some of the cat involvement seems a little forced (just putting in cat dialogue to be able to classify it a cat mystery) but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I will definitely continue the series!

The Cats that Chased the Storm

Another fun read from Karen Golden involving Katherine Kendall and her three cats, Lilac, Scout, Iris, and Abby, the cat she inherited from her great Aunt Orvenia, along with a Victorian mansion and 44 million dollars in Erie, Indiana. My reading of this second novel in the series was interrupted when the charging port on my Kindle failed just before Christmas. Just before New Years, I sent it off to be repaired (if you need Kindle repair, just ask me and I'll give you this gentleman's info -- he did a great job for a reasonable price and turned the project around quickly!) I received it back in early January, but was in the middle of reading a very long and complicated novel in paperback, so put off returning to this novel until I finished. Then, I decided as it had been almost a full month, perhaps I should start from the beginning, which I did -- from there it was finished in two days.
Back to the book!
This picks up just a short while after the end of the first book. Spring is arriving in Indiana, and those of us who live here know what that means. Katz is settling in, deciding what she'd like to do with herself in Indiana, looking into starting renovation to provide a classroom in which she would teach computer skills, and continuing her research into the history of the inherited house and its former occupants. But, in the middle of the night, a tornado rips through Erie and through Kathleen's old Victorian lady. She manages to get herself and the cats into the basement, but even there they aren't really safe from the storm's power. Katz is knocked unconscious by a flying object. When she awakes, she is fine, and so are the cats, but the house has sustained major damage, including the collapsing of part of the basement wall, revealing a long lost skeleton.
From there, the race is on to uncover not only the identity of the remains, but who has been breaking into the house, and who is trying to poison Abby, and why. Added to the original cast of characters is Cokey's nephew, Jake, who looks to be the Katz's love interest in the next novel. Madness and mayhem abound, with a last second rescue in the graveyard.
As usual, excellent proofing and editing. I only found one troubling thing -- and it is correct grammatically, just awkward. Made me stop and go back a couple of times to be sure I was reading it correctly.
Pacing is good, characterizations are good, plotting good and the writing style easy to read. Nothing to complain about. I do wonder why someone, like Katerine, who worked in a thriving New York business where working around sophisticated and complicated legal issues would be everyday fare, seems to be so suspicious of the estate attorney, Mark, who to my eye (and I worked in a law office for over 4 decades) has not done anything to make her feel so. I will assume that Golden has a plan for future novels that will either bear out that suspicion or put it bed (perhaps both literally and figuratively) once and for all. Right now, it seems to make Kathleen a bit scattered -- first she's attracted to him, then she's feeling sorry for him, then she's mad at him, then she's suspicious of him -- and I just roll my eyes.
I did like the little end bit in this novel, which was not related to the mystery of the story. Just before the final action scene relating to the mystery, Katz receives a phone call from her ex-boss, Monica, saying that Scout's sister, Abra (Scout having originally been named Cadabra) had been located and returned to the magician who trained both cats. He invited Katz and Scout to be his guest when he appeared in Chicago. The recounting of the trip, with the resulting addition of Abra to Katz's growing clowder, was a nice touch. Another assumption: I'm betting this new addition will figure prominently in the next book in the series.
Overall, I'm enjoying the series. I have the next two book in the series on my Kindle and look forward to seeing what new mayhem Golden imagines for Katherine.

I'm Loving "The Cats that" Series
I just finished reading the second book in "The Cats that" series by Karen Anne Golden. So far, this has been an entertaining and easy to read series. I'm having a great deal of fun following the happenings in the life of Katherine (Katz) Kendall, her new friends and acquaintances (some of who may be criminals - even murderers!), potential love interests, and especially her cats--I am loving the cats! They have their own large personalities, likes and dislikes and specific catspeak. I don't do spoilers, since I don't like reading them. I suffer from (sometimes severe) insomnia,so I read a lot at bedtime. This has been the perfect series to read. Ms. Golden's writing style is calming to me, even if Katz has just come upon a murder victim--I know it sounds odd, but it's true. I will stay awake to read because I am interested in reading more, not because my brain is too excited to sleep. It makes a big difference. I will now go and download the next book in the series. Keep on writing, Ms. Golden, and I will keep on reading. Thanks!

I really enjoyed this book. It's a light heart story of the escapades of Katz and her four felines. Another mystery awaits as a storm partially destroys Katz house, only to uncover a skeleton in her basement. I love this series,it's clean, entertaining, with a hint a romance and has cats. What more could you want?

I liked this book as well as the first one. It reminds me a lot of The Cat Who books with the same kind of Siamese who do certain tricks that tell their humans a clue. It is updated and has a kind link to the past in the Pink Mansion. I can't wait for the third.

This series is growing on me.
While the premise seemed a bit corny, Katz and her motley bunch of furballs have started to grow on me. Thankfully this book wasn’t leaning as heavily into the cats seemingly ‘extra’ computer related abilities and I’m fine with that. The mystery this time was a good old fashioned cold case mixed in with more fallout from Katz accepting her inheritance.
Mark was acting weird in this book, and there is a new guy on the scene that has attracted our protagonists attention. Not sure if Mark is just jealous, but if Katz feels she no longer trusts Mark completely then that’s that. Really hoping he’s not going to turn out to be a bad mastermind kind of character though.
Now that I’m in the thick of this, I’m just going to go ahead and pick up book 3 - cause I need to know 😉

Smells like treasure
Another great read. Alright I have read this before but it by no means spoilt it.
The cats are up to their old tricks, poking around and finding things that she knows mean something she could only decipher it. However when she finds an old accounts book, she keeps quiet about it. Even when two members of the Historical Society come over. The cats however have no such qualms and raid one of the handbags - pulling out a small coin purse that has interesting items in it. Then add a tornado warning, concussion, a skull, a tunnel and a story of buried treasure. Can she unravel the clues before she ends up like one visitor - dead! A great plot and the introduction of a new man was very well done.

The second book was every bit as good as the first one. Katz and the cats are now settled in the pink mansion in Indiana and the weather has turned pretty foul. Scout would make a great weather vane. The cats are into everything these days and Katz wonders where they find all the stuff. She has a few disturbing event that happen to her along with another mystery to solve. This was a fast paced, exciting murder mystery that I read today. I loved this book and I just know the entire series is going to be wonderful and exciting. I couldn't wait to see what happened by the end of this book and I wasn't disappointed.

This is such a fun series. Good mysteries and I love how well the author gave each cat a different voice and personality! (Sweet) Abby and (Ornery) Scout are my favorites.
I thought with the first book that this would become a favorite series, and now after the second book,I am anxious to get to the third, set during my favorite season(fall), and around my favorite Holiday-,Halloween,haha!

I read this book for What's in A Name 2018: the word 'the' used twice.
I enjoy reading books about cat owners and their cats. The cats in the book tell when a tornado is coming and find a skull. Katherine is living in a house that was owned by her aunt. She discovers that bootlegging had been going on in the house. The skull that the cat discovered helps solve the mystery of a missing relative.

Caution: Contains Bad Language
Reading the first book in the series was a little rough going, but showed a lot of potential, so I decided to continue reading. The second in the series was much better with one exception - a lot more gratuitous bad language. If that matters to you as it does to me, you may want to look for another cozy mystery author, which is what I'm going to have to do. Too bad.

An adorable story!
The Cozy Mystery Book 2, was a joy to read. I felt the story & the writing was much better than Book 1. The adventures of Katz are fun and mysterious. Her new love interest, is charming. Her lawyer is someone I hope the author develops a bit more in future books.

A nice, light read. More history than mystery, but enjoyable nonetheless. The characters build from the 1st book, and to be honest, I'm starting to suspect everyone as a potential bad guy! The cats are adorable, the writing is even and the history fascinating. I'm looking forward to the next installment for another quick, relaxing read.

This was a relatively short book but I really enjoyed it and it held my attention the whole way through. I didn’t want to put it down.

it wasn't an amazing book, but it was fun and fast, cats are obviously the biggest plus, plot was quite interesting

Needs work
Conversation is not smooth and does not flow. The action moves to swiftly and abruptly without enough set up. Good storyline, but not a good delivery.

I have missed Lillian Jackson Braum's "The Cat Who..." books since that author's death.
This was almost as good as the first book in the series. A little too predictable but still worthy of five stars. I do believe you should read #1 first so you know the characters -- and that includes the fur-babies.

I really liked this second book of the series. The catly crew has expanded and all these furry sleuths make me laugh. It's a quick read and the characters are interesting. Nice series.
