I really struggled getting through this book.

I typically enjoy Taylor V. Donovan's work. She writes complex, imperfect characters that I find myself rooting for. But they also put me through the ringer and by the end, I can feel I've invested myself, my time, my energy, in to her books and I like the feeling of being rewarded with a great story and strong characters.

Hearsay, for me, lacked that depth I'm used to reading from this author.

In blurb form it might feel like it would be really engaging: 2 lawyers, inter-office roma

UPDATED JUNE 7, 2014:
Since I read this book in late May 2014 and wrote this review on June 1st, Taylor V. Donovan has added the following disclaimer to the blurb:
"“Hearsay” is the first installment in “Bylaws,” my new series about attorneys working for Acosta, Bradford & Chadwick, LLP, a fictional lawfirm located in NYC. It is also part of a trilogy within the series, soon to be followed by “Gainsay.” and “Daresay.” All three titles will feature the same couple, Roman Bradford and Derrick Swain, and

Have you ever had a situation where you have said to someone in conversation, "I don't know if I could do what (insert name here) did?" in relation to an illness or taking care of someone. It is usually something we say out of awe or respect, or as conversation. Well, that is the primary plot driver behind Hearsay. If you think this book may include a court case, forget it, you would be dead wrong. It is a lot about a silly misunderstanding that blows up bigger than a parade float. Attorney's ar

Since I've read the Six Degrees series, I'm a Taylor V. Donovan fan. I love her writing and her characters! With this book, my feelings didn't change. This book, however, speaks of a reality that I don't see many often in the books that I read. I won't speak more about that, I don't want to spoil anything.

Roman and Derrick, both lawyers, both beautiful, completely in love. Roman is older than Derrick, but they have a great chemistry, and their relationship grows slowly, steadily... We can feel

I really enjoyed this first book in the Bylaws trilogy. I'm not going to recap the story as the blurb nicely sets forth what the book is about, but if you want more details check out Baba's review. This part of the story sets up the relationship between Derrick and Roman and lays the groundwork for the legal battle that will play out further in the next book.

Derrick is a planner, but he is also a romantic who is not afraid to let out his feelings and emotions to those who he cares for. Grow

I like this book and I also had issues with this book. My main problems were the agonizing pace, continuity errors, information dumps and oodles of dramatic antics. Hearsay is VERY romantic. It actually feels a lot like a bodice ripper and, truth be told, if one of these guys had wore a bodice I probably would’ve forgotten a couple of my issues. Alas, neither do. However, I do appreciate the message of this book and applaud Ms. Donovan for addressing a very serious issue with taste and respect. I did f ...more

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

First off. I would not consider this a cliffhanger. I keep seeing that thrown around. Are all the story arcs tidied up nice and neat at the end of the book? No. This is a planned series. From talking with this author last year at GRL, I know she’s a planner. She knows where she’s taking these characters. Have a little faith she’ll take care of us, the readers. She hasn’t done

I am a huge fan of TVD, and love her Degrees series, so I was really looking forward to this new series. It did not disappoint. But don’t go into this expecting Roman and Derrick to be carbon copies of Mac and Sam. These two boys come with a whole new set of issues and totally different personalities. We do still get the signature TVD storytelling and complete characterization even though this installment does end on a ”to-be-continued” note, which is kind of alluded to and expected when it’s th ...more

I was really disappointed in this. I have been waiting for a looooong time and thought I was going to get something different. Roman's "situation" and the reason why he kept Derrick at arm's length was very obvious to me from the beginning. I am not sure if it was meant to be a big secret or what. If it was meant to be a secret, it was very poorly done. If it wasn't, I can't excuse 200 something pages of beating around the bush when it came to it. Roman could have dealt with it in some fashion. Can I get at le ...more

After DNFing two of TVD's previous books I wasn't planning on reading this one. Then my good friend Baba told me how much she enjoyed it and she thought I might like it, too. She didn't think the problem that I had with the other books, that there being too many secondary characters to keep track of, would be an issue with this one. Well, she was right! I really enjoyed part one of Derrick and Roman's story and I'm looking forward to the second one.

I'm very sad for this rating because Taylor V. Donovan is one of my fav and an auto-buy author for me.

Derrick isn't very likeable, he's silly and childish and have an almost egomaniacal vision of the world. Roman is more bearable, but during a significant portion of the story he seemed somewhat timorous to me and without the temperance that would have been expected from a similar character; I admit that he has his reasons, but even so... Neither thoughts not even the conduct of both of them measures up w

I can't wait to find out what happens next. I'm finding that I've become a big fan of the serial sort of book, it's like watching a whole season of your favorite show, only in book form. I just wish it wasn't such a long wait between episodes!

What I liked: the storyline/setting of the story

What I didn't like:
** the ridiculously long pining for each other MCs. Seriously? who doesn't act on their feelings for six years? All I can think of is the wasted time!
** the endearments
** Both guys were at times too sappy

I am still curious about the sequel. Not sure I care about these two guys strongly so I hope some of the other characters will get their own storyline.

2.5 - didn't enjoy this one. Found Roman's evasive thoughts about his mysterious illness annoying and distracting. I guessed correctly from the start, but the way he constantly referrs to it without identifying it just annoyed me. And the whole drawn out allegations things...guh. Not a series for me.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this story and bought it immediately! I delved right into it and at the end of the story, the only thought I could develop was...hhmmm....

I think for me, using the "impending avoided conversation" as the focal point of the drama and tension didn't work, it was basically an exaggerated form of "the big misunderstanding". This took away from character development because I was thrown into a tense relationship, rather then seeing what lead the

Oh, what a beautiful punch to the guts! I was not expecting the emotional depth in this book. I haven't read all that many books that deal with chronic disease, so even though I could see it coming, the reveal, then all of the heart tearing and warming scenes following took my breath away.

In a Nutshell: Not the book for me though I did appreciate the emotional connection between the leads.

Why I Read This Book: I adore this author’s other books and was giddy to read this one.

What I Liked: Roman and Derrick have a palpable emotional draw to each other. Their mutual longing and desire to build a life together really resonated with me.

I also liked the brief glimpse into Roman’s business partner’s life. There is absolutely a story there and I want t

I've really enjoy the Separation series. I'm waiting on pins and needles for Agony. I say that because I was really surprised how Hearsay disappointed me. SPOILER ALERT!

THIS IS NOT A CLIFFHANGER. This book was long enough to get to an adequate end. Too much time was spent eluding to an illness and a possible arrest. Chapter after chapter kept me hanging on. Get to the freaking point already. I even considered (and did) read another book while we floated on the never ending *I'm going to die* an

Beautiful! And a good worked out plot and characters! I'm very interested in the issues that will be dealt with in this series.

But I have to admit that for me the characters in this book, both main and secondary, weren't as likable as the characters in her other series, By Degrees. I felt less connected too. Maybe because we don't actually witness them falling for each other. That happened months/years ago. We only witness the MC's lusting after each other, followed by (v

This book was a disappointment. I was really looking forward to it since I liked the other books but I'm not sure if I want to continue this series. Through this whole book I had to keep reminding myself that it was about two men. Derrick was such a chick that I didn't remember it was an m/m book, it drove me nuts. I didn't care to much for the language used either, I mean who says someone looks dashing !?!

This started out pretty slow for me. It took me awhile to get into it because I generally hate being kept in the dark in books. But once the story picked up around the 40% mark, I was completely hooked! Derrick was a bit naïve and childish at times and Roman made me want to strangle him when he closed up, but they were magnetic together. As always, I love the way Taylor Donovan writes and I can't wait to continue this series!

For it's a truth universally acknowledged that Gyn only gives five stars to tales of great epicness, and although Hearsay didn't quite get that fifth star, it does bring to mind one of my favorite five star books, Pride & Prejudice.

Let's talk about all the ways Hearsay is like a modern day version of a most beloved classic.

The plot:

Pride & Prejudice was built around gossip, also known as... you got it! Hearsay! There are all kinds of crazy rumors and t

2.5-2.75 stars. It's breaking my heart because I'd waited for this so long and wanted to love it so much but just couldn't : (

The beginning is so cute, Derrick and Roman slowly getting to know each other then Roman's health changes and he cuts off contact entirely. I was hooked by that prologue but the rest lost me.

The book, especially the beginning, contains many discussions between and among many parties discussing rumors of the very large law office. The problem is we don't know

Liked it! Except for the big revelation.. I was expecting it, but so hoping I was wrong. If it had been something different I would have given this book 4 stars.

Derrick and Roman have been crushing on each other for years. The fact that Roman is technically Derrick’s boss does not stand in the way of them falling hard for each other.
