When best friends--Maggie, the "sexpert" at a trendy fashion magazine; Chandra, an African-American business executive; and Apple, a wedding photographer--become contestants on a reality dating show, they compete against one another to find Mr. Right and win a million bucks. Reprint.
This was a great summer read. Although I am far from being single and dating and going out with girlfriends, I still enjoyed this book very much. It's a great beach or swimming pool read. A couple of parts were predictable and a couple parts seemed overdone, but overall it was fun entertainment.
After watching Girls' Night Out sit and collect dust on my shelves for years I finally overcame my prudishness and gave it a read. The result: I was pleasantly surprised!
Skipping over the raunchy sex scenes (really not my cup of tea, though what I did glimpse was well written (for all that I know)), Girls' Night Out is a fun, compelling, chick-lit adventure. The glitz of early-2000s fashion, the drama of a reality dating show, the allure of NYC in wintertime; this novel has it all, and is written with an insider's confidence.
I really enjoy Roz Bailey's writing style! Her storytelling is creative and youthful, yet still complies to the rules of Good Writing. I never imagined I would buy another book from her, but I found myself reading the bonus chapters at the back of the book anyway, desperate for more!
On the down side, I will admit that the beginning buildup was awfully slow. Further, I felt that the relationships were too serious in too short a time-frame (although, keep in mind that this is reality tv). I was also confused about the characters constantly acknowledging the camera crew. That didn't seem right to me... But what do I know about early-aughts dating shows? Also, Chandra's backstory was a big, jumbled, inconsistent web that never really was clarified.
I'm glad I finally gave in to this tempting cover and read Girls' Night Out! I honestly look forward to reading more of Bailey's works. Sometimes a girl just needs a little light-hearted fluff!
This is the 5th & final book I won in the bridal shower gift basket mentioned in my review for Liar, Liar. This was the best of the bunch. A fun read, if you ignore how easily the main characters got over their deep issues.
This is just an every day story of 3 really good friends, I'm sure every girl can find at least one of the girls to relate to. I was in the mood for a girly novel when I bought it, and it accomplished the girly feel, but it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. It was a little boring at times. Some of the stuff in the book makes you think "who cares".
