Liō #4

Reheated Lio: A Delicious Lio Collection Ready to Devour

Rate this book

Distinguished by Variety as a fast riser, Mark Tatulli's morbidly mirthful comic strip Lio proves that happiness is indeed a modified Snuggie for you and your favorite eight-armed cephalopod. Reheated Lio, the fourth Lio cartoon collection, includes 40 weeks of color Sunday strips as well as black-and-white daily strips.

Drawn in the style of cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A. J. Volck, Lio is a pantomime strip that tells its story without any dialogue or cartoon captions. Fans of Lio recognize the spiky-haired ghostly pale youngster as a curious scientist, a comic-book fan, the defender of the defenseless, and the creator of a legion of zombie bunnies, flanked by his creepy coterie of friends, including giant squid Ishmael and the scythe-carrying grim reaper.

Inside Reheated Lio, readers learn how Mr. Sneaky's Jokes and Gags can make archery practice more fun, along with the many uses of spiders--including their essential roles in Girl Scout cookie procurement and as a quality pizza condiment. Cozy up to your favorite Snuggied cephalopod with Reheated Lio.

Lio, the comic, is one of those comic strips that's just rare to see published in the paper these days...it doesn't conform to the norm. Lio breaks all of the rules and loves to play with monsters, giant squids, give zombies makeovers, and routinely invents robots that an take over the world (or can serve coca and cookies on Christmas eve.) And this collection captures these amazing strips for continued enjoyment.

I give the book 4 stars for two things:
1) They goofed and repeated one of the Sunday strips twice (the one of Lio and the Squid sitting on Santa's lap for a picture...much to Santa's confusion.
2) Some of the Sunday strips are harder to read/see the detail because they've been reduced in size to fit on the page.

Other than that a fantastic collection and well worth buying (and devouring)

Even though the Comics is still the first section of the paper I grab every Sunday, I actually only read a handful. This is one of them. Lio is simple, funny, sweet, and a bit twisted--basically everything a mainstream comic strip should be. It's probably the closest in spirit to Calvin and Hobbes that we have today.

Delightfully macabre.

Good for a modern newspaper comic, but it's nowhere near the quality of Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts, despite common claims to the contrary.
