It was the perfect place to grow up…and the perfect place to die.

After experiencing a personal tragedy, Carmen McKenna finds Hunter’s Hollow—a bustling campground in rural North Carolina—to be her new home and worst nightmare.

Despite the promises of a chosen family and a safe place to grow up, living next door to the Hunters’ two sons comes with its own set of challenges. Jack and Dean introduce Carmen to a world she’s never known—one filled with young love, first heartbreak, and sinister secrets.

When a body is found at Hunter’s Hollow, instantly shattering the tranquil façade that has surrounded the campground, the residents are forced to accept the truth: a killer is among them. As the police search for answers to no avail, Carmen leaves the campground in hopes of clearing her mind and healing her broken heart.

Now, eleven years later and with the case still unsolved, Carmen returns to face the past and discover the truth about that terrible night. Before she can, a guest is reported missing from the campground and the circumstances are all too similar to the horror Carmen once faced.

They say you can’t go home again, but when buried secrets call to Carmen from Hunter’s Hollow, she’s determined to learn the truth about what happened back then—and what’s happening now—if it’s the last thing she does.

Returning to once again blur the edges between psychological thriller and romantic suspense, million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin brings us a sun-soaked, nostalgic, and completely twisted romantic thriller.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but that’s what you guys don’t pay me for, so here goes:

The premise of this book sounds amazing. An unsolved murder, sinister secrets, and another missing girl. Alas, this book definitely was heavy on the romance/coming of age side of things with the body discovery and the murderer being revealed in the last 20 pages.

The reveal was so anticlimactic I can’t even. And the way it happened was so dumb, which ending up feeling like the suspense/thriller aspect of this book was a last minute add on. Don’t get me wrong, I flew through this book and it kept me interested - but I felt mislead based on the book description. All in all if you are looking for a bingeable romance that reminded me of “the summer I turned pretty”with a smidge of murder this book is for you.

This is not Kiersten Modglin’s typically can’t put down twisty thriller, but I did enjoy this suspenseful romance. While the love triangle thing is not my favorite I thought this tale of Carmen being stuck between two brothers was compelling. I liked Carmen, her mom and the Hollow a lot. Carmen hasn’t been home in years, not since she ran and didn’t look back. But her mother has been bugging her to come down and since she is in between work projects she agrees to come home. The book is told in alternating parts of present and past as Carmen remembers and explores her relationships with family friends Jack and Dean. I honestly didn’t think Jack had much going for him ever, but I could understand how Carmen felt. But when Carmen left home in addition to the personal drama there was also the murder of her best friend which was never solved. So when another 18 year old goes missing Carmen can’t help but believe they were connected. If romantic suspense is your go to genre than run don’t walk to pick this one up.

With such a chilling cover I'd expect to be chilled, or even thrilled at least. This was basically about a love triangle between a girl and 2 brothers beginning in the teens until she's 30. Not what I want in my supposed thrillers quite honestly. I needed more on the dead body than I got, and what I got was gross and I'm not really talking about the body itself.

This is a well-written, entertaining, romantic suspense novel. It is fast paced, with vividly described settings, family and relationship drama, and an unexpected twist. I listened to the audio book, and the narrator, Ms. Diana Bustelo, does an excellent job voicing the characters.

In this addictive and atmospheric read by Kiersten Modglin, Carmen is planning on a two-month stay at a campground known as Hunter's Hollow. It has been eleven years since Carmen was at the campground. When she was thirteen, her mother moved them to the site and Carmen had some good memories, but most certainly haunting memories as well.

In this story presented in both past and present, Carmen's experiences as a teenager and now as an adult, especially with the two Hunter brothers, Dean and Jack, are quite telling. Carmen and Jack are the same age, and as teens they were drawn to one another. Dean was the typical annoying older brother, but had a powerful impact on Carmen's life.

Something horrible happened when they were teenagers, a crime that was never solved. This is rather haunting to Carmen now that she is back. During her years away Carmen carved out a very good career for herself as a book illustrator, leaving the campground and its memories in her rear view. Carmen always felt a strong sense of unease that the case years before had never been solved. Dealing with that, as well as how both Dean and Jack impacted her life during her younger years, deeply affects Carmen.

Having had some memorable vacations at different campsites while I was younger made it quite easy to put myself in Carmen's shoes. The angst felt so real, as well as the uncertainty of the dangers that were present for her, but also when it came to matters of the heart. Needless to say, Hunter's Hollow was unlike any campsite I ever spent time at, but I was no less drawn to this engaging read. In fact, I stayed up and read it from cover to cover in one sitting. Thank you to Kiersten Modglin for writing yet another compelling psychological thriller that definitely cost me some sleep.

Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This was a bit of a departure for the author, she’s well known (and really good at) writing super fast paced and twisty thrillers and this had a different vibe. It was slower and quieter, more of a coming of age story with some mystery elements and romance too. There’s dual timelines, both from Carmen’s POV one in the past when she first moves to Hunters Hollow and one in present day as she comes home. The past timeline is where the coming of age vibes comes into play as it follows her from being a new teenager through college aged. When the past collides with the present day things start to get more tense and the authors trademark suspense begins to shine through but at it’s heart this is about grief, loss and tragedy with romance playing a heavy roll, things even got a little steamy 🥵 I’m always in awe when an author does something a little different for them and this definitely impressed me.

While this is much different from KMod’s usually fast and charged thriller, this was a great coming of age romantic suspense that I thoroughly enjoyed. This atmospheric read really pulled at your heart strings and makes you root for love. I devoured this one so fast, I just could not get enough of it. The mystery element could not have been done better with the multiple timelines and it added to my overall excitement for finding out the secret that has been buried for years. When the final twist was revealed, I had to pick my jaw off the floor because it was so unexpected but made perfect sense. If you are looking for a romantic suspense, this would be a great choice.

****Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for the ARC in turn for an honest review and for having me on your ARC team!

My thoughts: 🔖Page 40 of 258 Chapter Six ~ Before ~ Age 13 - I almost want to abandon this book and wait for the audiobook, but I'm nearly 15% in and something is amidst so I'm going to try to stick it out.
🔖182 Chapter Twenty-One ~ Present Day - Okay, it's boring. I am not exactly sure what kind of book this is mostly filled with drama and not the good kind. There is a cold case but I don't have a lot of information about it so it's not suspenseful. There is a love triangle but it's very juvenile so it doesn't come off romantic. Basically, there's not a lot to latch on to, I'm not sure audio would help. Since I'm 70% in I'm gonna go ahead and finish this story later today.

I finally finished this one it was lacking even on the romance and suspense. I didn't enjoy this story I think if my expectations weren't for a psychological thriller I would have been less disappointed but I would have skipped this one if I knew the plot in advance. I will be reading The Stranger but I will consider reading the synopsis for future books. This is my 33rd Modglin book and she has been an automatic read for me but I may be screening in the future.

Recommend to others: No, but I'm sure some people love this and it's 5 stars for them.

An entertaining romantic thriller, that is a little slower-paced than some other Kiersten Modglin books I have read.

Set at Hunter’s Hollow campground in rural North Carolina, told through dual-timeline. Featuring found family, young love, buried secrets and a dead body.

I feel audiobooks are harder to rate coz why?? You find that narration is good but the contents not so much, so how do you rate them?? I really didn't want to rate it this low because I actually enjoyed the book and it kept me on edge as it is well written but there are huge huge problems with the overall book I had and let me tell you what made me leave a negative review here

* The book is categorised in mystery thriller but it is not so. The mystery takes about 10 pages of the book maybe, about 15-20 minutes of the Audiobook.
* It's more of a romantic suspense, kind of love triangle.
* It's more young adult and I wouldn't recommend it to those who are looking for hard-core romance as this wasn't it.
* Although it kept me interested the whole time, the love triangle was interesting but it just felt too cheesy ( I guess I just like cheesy stuff sometimes). I don't get it how do you not know which brother do you really like?
* Why people in these books have such poor communication skills?
* The pull and push so many times made my headache.

This is my second book by Kiersten Modglin and I definitely like her writing but this really is a big turn-off for me if I'm entering in the book thinking it's mystery thriller but it is not.

Audiobook narration : 4 stars
Book rating : 2 stars

Rounding it up to 3 stars.

A relentless, suspenseful, and propulsive thriller that I devoured in two days. I always love Kiersten books for vivid characters and clever twists. She is a master at crafting truly palable tension, and her skill at plotting and suspense building that have readers glued to the pages. Then add in a jaw-dropping, earth-shattering final reveal, and you have all the key ingredients of a well executed thriller. Kiersten nailed it as she always does. I thoroughly enjoyed .

I always love when there’s a new Kiersten modglin book. The suspense books that are heavy on the romance aren’t usually my favorite, but I always love hers. This is a sweet teen romance/drama mixed with the adult aftermath of it all. The thrilling suspense is a nice bonus to really make this book impossible to put down. The shocking twist at the end is a given with Kiersten Modglin and is the cherry on top.

Did this book even have a plot? Not really. The summary was so promising and everything fell flat. What should have been a thriller/murder mystery was really a love story told between two different time periods with no real substance. This was a miss.

love how Kiersten Modglin’s books are never what I expect. From the cover, you’d expect them to be dark and super twisty. To be fair, they are kind of dark but they also have a light about them. This one in particular was a bit of romance mixed with thriller and I really enjoyed it. Reminded me a bit of Sandra Brown, who I also love. Will definitely be picking up more of Kiersten’s!

🌀Synopsis
Carmen grew up in Hunter’s Hallow, a campground, and now she’s finally coming back. Years ago she fell in love here and also watched as tragedy struck. When she fled, she left to heal her broken heart but Hunter’s Hallow didn’t leave her.
Dean’s family owns Hunter’s Hallow and it kills him to see Carmen in love with her brother Jack. When he finally gets a chance to be with Carmen he knows it what he wants. Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right back then. This time is going to be different.
When the two crash back together, the sparks are still there. When strange things start to happen at the campground, everyone has a strange sense of deja vu. Carmen and Dean are determined to get to the bottom of it this time though, and it only drives them together more.

I enjoyed this story immensely. KMod never disappoints and always gives us an entertaining book.

I liked how it switch from the present and the past to make sure we got the whole story and how it all leads up to the jaw dropping ending. Which I di not see coming.

I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

This gave me OG KMod vibes. The spicy side of thrillers isn’t an area she often dabbles in, but she’s still got it!

I loved how this was told. Alternating perspectives build the story from both ends, which is beautifully done. It also showed the growth the characters had between then and now.

For someone who says they aren’t visual, the scenery described at the camp was stunning. I could almost feel the crisp air and smell the trees.

This book had a bit of a The Messes vibe (Iykyk), which I loved. The way this story encompassed growing up, first love, grief, fear, regret, and family, was brilliant.

The emotions are strong throughout this story and are written so brilliantly you feel everything. KMod takes us on a journey of growing up, working through love and loss, and maybe finding a happy ending.

I loved everything from the map (a first from Kiersten!) to the storyline, characters, twists, and acknowledgments. This powerfully written book will connect with you in ways you don’t expect.

This is in my top five favorites from Kiersten, and I am excited to recommend it!

Carmen returns to Hunter’s Hallow, the campground she grew up in to face her complicated past including the two brothers she was always torn between and the unsolved murder that’s always haunted her.

Wow. This was my first Kiersten Modglin and I can’t wait to listen to more! Here’s what I loved:

Thriller and romance: these are my genres so when they get combined I get so excited! Here you get a brothers love triangle that has lasted years. All the while, there is a missing girl and an unsolved murder to deal with. I love when these two genres are combined and Modglin does such a good job with it!

The structure: while Carmen is trying to figure out her present, you get alternating past chapters that really dig into her relationships with the brothers and The Hollow

The setting: I love a good cabin in the woods story and this whole book takes place on the family campground. It gives off a fun summer camp vibe while also being eerie.

The narration; I really enjoyed listening to this. The narrator did a great job with the characters and put me right into the story.

All in all, a really good romantic thriller!

Thank you to the author and Dreamscape for the gifted audiobook!

The Hollow is a psychological thriller by Kiersten Modglin.

After the death of her father, Carmen McKenna and her mother move to Hunter’s Hollow, which is a campground owned by her moms best friend, She hates everything about the move, missing the house she grew up in, the one that holds all her memories of her dad. Upon arriving she sees Jack and Dean, not realizing that these two boys will shape parts of her life in too many ways.

The story bounces around from the past to the present to reveal a mystery that will leave chills all over. When a young girl disappears, it becomes eerily reminiscent of the girl that disappeared eleven years ago, triggering memories that reveal Carmen Jake and Deans history.

The book is well written. I enjoyed the way the memories came back based on the current events. The mystery was good giving twists that will keep you in shock.

Kiersten Modglin is great, once again slowly building up a story that makes it hard to put down. While it’s a short read, it’s loaded with a bit of everything. People looking for a fast thriller, like Freida McFadden, Spencer Guerrero, Nicole Trooe fans will find this book right up their alley, or better yet, right on their TBR.

I would describe this book as a slow paced coming of age, YA novel with a little bit of mystery mixed in. I enjoyed the characters and the setting. I would have liked more of a thriller aspect, more action instead of just thoughts on the page and twist at the end but I enjoyed the book overall.

Thank you to the author for this early copy. All opinions are my own.

Like so many other readers, I wasn’t expecting this to be a romantic novel. I am definitely a psychological thriller girl. There was a minor mystery to this book that turned out to be a big disappointment to me, but I still enjoyed the book. The romance was a constant tension so I guess that’s a little like a psychological thriller, lol! But seriously, be aware that this IS a romantic novel and different from KMod’s typical book. I think she did a great job explaining her motivation for writing it. I always like to read words from the author to the readers!

This book was probably an 80/20 split for romance/thriller, if that. But I’m not complaining. I knew who the killer was pretty early on, but I didn’t know the how. I think because I’ve read a few of KM’s books it’s a little predictable but still enjoyable.

Part of me wishes I would have never finished this book. The synopsis sold it as a thriller/mystery. That’s the genre I was *hoping* to get out of this book. It ended up being 90/10 romance/mystery. I am giving it 3 stars only bc, had it been advertised correctly, I would have enjoyed it. Womp womp.

3.5⭐️ This is an adorable coming-of-age, easy read. It’s labeled adult thriller, but I would suggest it’s more suited for mature teens who like a little suspense

Carmen returns home and is flooded with teen memories of the love triangle she shares with two brothers, Dean and Jack (Supernatural fans, the dad is called Sam!)

There’s a missing girl mystery woven throughout with the reveal coming at the end - it comes out of left field to be honest

The narrator of the audiobook definitely enhanced my enjoyment of the book, so if possible, I recommend listening

I absolutely love reading romantic suspense written by K-mod. Don’t get me wrong, she writes amazing thrillers too, which always get me hooked, but when she adds the romantic touch in there too, it’s swoon worthy. The Hollow had me feeling a roller coaster of emotions. From the MC trying to find where home really is for her to her finding the man she can call home; I was hooked on every word and every emotion that I felt. The final twist at the end took me by surprise, of course, and had my jaw hanging open in disbelief. The queen of twists strikes again! This book was honestly everything I could ask for in a romantic suspense, and I highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy. 4.5 out of 5 star rating, rounding up to 5 on goodreads!
