Reader should know that the book is quite defensive of the generals who sent the troops "over the hill" into the MG fire.
I do believe that some of the author's defenses might be valuable - but I do not see him thinking the littelest about the e.g. different social classes that were hosted so differntly in the chateaus and in the trenches.
See the movie "Paths of Glory" for an Illustration.
And, of course, the topic the the machine gun, but the book's focus is also on innovation and its absorbtion

This book is more focused on procurement, tactics and unit structures than technology, making it a good companion to most books on machine guns, which tend to be the opposite.
