B. J. ter Haar, professor at Oxford and perhaps the most knowledgeable man alive on the White Lotus religion, has published this exhaustive (exhaustive) study of that religion’s history. He traces it through the ages since its origin in Huiyuan’s Pure Land Buddhism on Mount Lushan in 402.

The writing is scholarly and clear but could have been much more interesting. but it's a fun read. many of the topics could be expanded into a book.
