Based on true events. Four lives, intertwined by friendship and business, whose true story was more devastating than fiction. Rob and Kaye were thrilled to be moving to the island of St. John with dear friends Jake and Claire. The men were going into business together and relocating with their families to the beautiful tropical paradise. It was a dream come true for the longtime friends. But, when feelings are revealed and temptation takes control, one friendship turns from lust to love and no one can walk away unscathed. And, one person's ultimate decision leaves everyone lost and devastated.

Two couples have been friends for many years. Jake and Claire, and Rob and Kaye. They are now living a few doors from one another. Jake and Kaye had been at college twenty years ago and were firm friends. Now all of a sudden he's making it clear that he feels more than friendship. Before you know it he and Kaye are having sex, a lot. Rob finds out but seems to think it's some sort of competition between him and Jake for Kaye's affections. When Kaye falls pregnant by Jake, Rob still continues to be supportive. He knows it can't be his baby as he's had a vasectomy.
This story had a lot of flaws IMO. Where was Jake's wife Claire when his affair with Kaye came to light. It's almost as though she's been erased from the story. I didn't connect with any of the characters they were all very self serving. The writing was rather stilted and wooden as well, and considering the subject matter it was far too long and would have been better as a novella as there's not enough substance to the plot. I see that there's a follow up book, I don't see the point dragging this story out over two books.

Paradise Taken by C.M. Hutton Series: Paradise Taken #1 Genre: Contemporary Romance Age Group: Adult Release Date: June 22nd 2013 Length: 255 pages Format: Kindle DRC Source: via tour host Review Date: April 2014 Steam Rating: Scorcher Overall Rating: 4.5 STARS
Review: WOW! What a wild ride! This is an emotional journey—one that is putting me through the full gamut of emotions. I have been sad, angry, and appalled but I have also felt joy, love, and raw passion too. I originally thought I would read this one for a couple reasons. One, because it was based on a true story, which is always intriguing—but also because St. John is the most beautiful place I have EVER been to (and I used to travel a lot). When I eventually get married it will be at the Westin in St. John. The island is simply breathtaking in its amazing beauty. I got so much more than I expected.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! Be damned that it was taboo!
WARNING: This novel contains a couple that cheats on their spouses with one another. It is straight up cheating. There is no legal separation, and no one is being abused in any way by their spouse. They are just cheating. If this is something that you cannot tolerate in your novels then I suggest you not read it. ←I knew this going in so I was prepared.
Why did I read it if it was so immoral? Well this is my take on cheating in novels → It happens in real life (which this story is actually based in) and I like my novels to feel real, and the MC’s flawed and sometimes that means they make mistakes. Even big mistakes like cheating. Do I condone it—NO—but I understand that it happens.
Paradise Taken is about two couples who have known each other since college, Rob & Kaye and Jake & Claire. It is told in Kaye’s POV. She finds out early on that Jake has loved her since they were friends in college. But he never did anything about it and she married his friend and business partner Rob. After 20 years of marriage both couples decide to move to St. John and start a business. They only saw each other a few times a year before this so Jack held his feeling in check. But now being around her has made him unable to hide those feelings any longer.
"Kaye, I'm not asking for anything from you, I know you love Rob, but I can't be here day in and day out with you and not finally tell you that I've loved you for twenty years"
Kaye’s marriage is a happy one. There are some minor problems, but overall she adores her husband and it’s obvious he feels the same. They have the perfect life. They still even have passion and lust in their marriage. When I mean they have it all, I really mean they are like the perfect couple.
But Kaye starts spending more time with Jake as friends, then more, then eventually they become lovers. Their raw passion BURNS the pages, and their love for each other brought tears to my eyes. I KNEW it was wrong, and I was conflicted—but I just couldn’t help how I felt. By the end I was rooting for her and Jake to work out, which if you told me at the beginning of the novel I would be feeling that way I would have told you that you were high on drugs.
But they both have spouses and teenage children to consider. Well Kaye considers them (somewhat) but Jake doesn’t seem to care, he just loves Kaye so much and everything else be damned. So as you can imagine it’s complicated, and crazy, and full of angst. And eventually they do have to make decisions that will affect their entire families. I did not see some of the twists and turns coming—I was literally blindsided by much of what happened towards the end.
This one started out a little slow, and I understood why it had to. But once it got going, WOW I was HOOKED! So keep that in mind :)
This is book 1 of 2, the second book is told in Jake’s POV. I will be reading it ASAP because the ending of this one SHOCKED THE SHIT OUTTA ME leaving me with so many questions. I NEED to know what happens next!!!
"I've waited for this for my whole life. You are the love of my life, Kay."
Good grief this book is terrible. The writing itself, the characters...and JFC THE WRITING: stilted, disjointed, cringe inducing. CRINGE, CRINGE, CRINGE.
There is a reason it's self-published (not that there aren't fantastic self-published books and excellent indie authors capable of writing thought provoking, evocative, entertaining, and well-crafted stories out there; there are. Plenty!) no publishing house would touch this bullshit with a 30 foot pole.
I'm offended, because if this is someone's real life events experience, Hutton did a piss poor job of bringing this tragic and difficult life dilemma to life on the page outside of reducing it to among the cheapest and embarrassing form of soap opera fodder. My god.
An interesting premise, for sure. But terrible execution through and through.
And I would caution that any reviewer saying that the writing in this book is great, or any other adjective that omits its very true flaws, should be side-eyed and viewed with distrust. They are...they lack perspective.
p.s. just bc a book is drama llama and soap-opera-ry doesn't mean it can't be good. I've read plenty of popcorn dram I shouldn't like bc of it's content and less than stellar writing, but I am able to be honest about there flaws even as I enjoyed it. This is not one of those instances. There are too many delicate themes covered that were, to me, handled so poorly. It's makes you unable to have a shred of compassion or sympathy for these awful people.
I know it happens in real life but when cheating happens in a book, I need to be able to empathize with the characters for doing it. It didn't happen here. Both were selfish and had little regard for the devastation it would cause their families.
I felt bad for the husband because he did try to make her happy.
Paradise Taken is the simple yet powerful account of a woman who has an affair. Let me be clear though, this is not your typical angst ridden love triangle. There is no angst in this book. The writing is straightforward and discusses what ALL married couples feel at some point.
“Why doesn’t that same kind of rush and heat endure through marriage and kids?”
Paradise Taken is based on true events. What those are, I don’t know, but it makes the story more realistic and gripping. The writing flowed very easily and I was able to devour it in one sitting. That is a very rare situation for me.
Two married couples, Rob and Kaye, and Jake and Claire, have known each other since college. They have been married for 17 years, have 3 teenage kids each, and now run a business together that has brought them to the island of St. John to live. Living in St. John is paradise for them. They live on the beach, have in-ground pools, drink cocktails at night, surf during the day, etc. It’s a permanent vacation. It’s not enough though for Jake, who has been in love with Kaye for twenty long years. In the past they only saw each other for vacation 1-2 times per year, but now that they’re neighbors, Jake can’t hide his feelings anymore.
The book is written solely from Kaye’s perspective. She had no idea about Jake’s feelings, but once she finds out, she can’t turn away. The problem is that she still loves Rob, although it’s a different kind of love from when they first married. She also does not want to destroy her family. The children do not play a part in this book. The author refers to them throughout the story, but there is not much interaction. However, its clear that they are extremely important to Kaye and one of the major reasons she struggles with this affair.
Jake and Kaye are able to carry on their affair, in secret, for a short time, before a shocking situation occurs and everyone suffers the consequences.
My thoughts on Rob and Jake - Rob was more alpha than Jake and, in my opinion, cared more about the family unit. He will not give up on his wife. Jake, on the other hand, appeared to care more about Kaye than his wife and kids. However, it was told from Kaye’s perspective so we never get inside his head. I’m going with Team Rob for book 1. To be continued…
Paradise Taken was an excellent debut novel by Author CM Hutton and I highly recommend it to all readers.
An ARC was kindly provided by the Author for an honest review.
I was saddened, happy, shocked and then some while reading this book. You will be gripped to each page until the end to find out what will happen to the characters.
4 friends come together before moving to the island to combine their business together. Rob and Kaye invite Jake and Claire to their place and that's when things get rather tricky.
Jake has always wanted Kaye but was too afraid to do anything about it. Now that he sees her again he's having a hard time letting go of these feelings.
Kaye has a good marriage. She loves Rob and their kids. Yet, Jake can't stop showing up and doing things for her/talking to her in a way Rob never has or has never ever made her feel. Now she too is wondering what her true feelings are.
You will feel for all the characters involved. Claire and Rob are good spouses but Jake and Kaye are having a hard time trying to figure out what "these" feelings are.
You can't help who you fall in love with and this book definitely lets you see this first hand.
I am very eager to read the next book since that ending was well...SHOCKING!
One of the best books Ive read in a long time!! I was quickly drawn into the story connecting and caring for the characters!! The intriguing love story kept me from being able to put the book down.. and I read the entire book on a Sunday afternoon. Long after I finished, the story stayed with me and I couldn't help but think about the characters!! Im hoping for a book #2 soon!! Its a great summer read to get lost in!
This book was a great read! I can't stop thinking about it. For this being the author's first book, I thought she did a great job of describing the setting and the characters emotions, so well that I was on an emotional roller coaster! I can't wait for book 2!
I loved this book! The end left me wanting more! I can't wait until the sequel comes out to find out what happens next in this love story. Full of passion, betrayal and longing...great summer read!
This book was great, felt I was right there with the characters. Once I picked up this book I couldn't put it down. Great writing, never got lost. Can not wait for her next book to come out!
Soooo bad. The cliffhanger is not a fun one. I didn't find the writting to be good at all. It felt cold and I didn't/couldn't relate to any of the characters in the book.
I’m sitting here with my mouth still hanging open. Did that really just happen? No really did that just happen? I’m going to warn you that this review is going to happen a little differently. I don’t want to let the proverbial cat out of the bag hell I don’t even want to begin to, but I do want you all to know that this book broke all my typical rules. And I want you all to understand that this is my take on this book here it goes. I’m going to try and start at the beginning. This is the 2nd book by CM Hutton that I’ve read, my first being just a few days ago. (Loving Her) This book was the first book that she published, and fantastic doesn’t even begin to describe it. I have to tell you it was a little hard to start, but once you get into it. You wont be able to put it down. It was a easy read, the words just kept flowing but the storyline left me feeling like I couldn’t read fast enough.
Paradise Taken is a story about two couples that share a long friendship and now a business together. They move to the Island of St. John were being around one another on a more regular basis brings out feelings to the surface that were tucked away before. Realizing that Jake can’t live his life without Kaye knowing the truth, he reveals his secret to her. And together they go on a very personal journey together of stolen moments, hidden looks and burning passion. But eventually, they are burnt by that very passion and have decision that must be made, or in my opinion are made for them. But what one person decides leaves them all walking away scars that run deep!
This book, its fantastic like I said before it does break a lot of rules for me. I’m not a big reader of books with affairs in them, but some of them like Paradise Taken you get it. I don’t really see it as the casual affair. I see Kaye as stuck no matter what she would’ve tried. She was trapped by a man that yes she loved, but there wasn’t any real passion for anymore. Rob seemed controlling to me, and yes there were times that she went along with it. But finally I think she realized that she deserved better, and deserved what true love. I don’t think she realized exactly what it was until Jake showed her it to her. And Jake, well you just fall in love with him. I can’t pinpoint what it is about him exactly he’s charming & sweet. Yes, I know he’s cheating to but there is something about him. Maybe is because you don’t know a lot about his relationship with Claire.
I do have to tell you that there will be a follow up book to this one. I don’t believe the exact date has been released. But I’m pretty sure it will be coming out in the earlier part of 2014. You will be hearing more from me about it all so stay tuned!!
Just going to start off by saying that I absolutely despise cheating people. That being said I gave this book fair shake even though I was screaming at it the whole time. LOL! It was a good read.
Kaye is a 38 year old married mom who has found herself in a marriage rut. As with all long term marriages, a certain routine emerges. Romance disappears, life gets hectic. She is caught in the raising of the kids. Rob and Kaye have a good marriage. They are hot, and have an awesome sex life, he tries to be romantic and sweet (with a little prodding). There's is a normal marriage going with the day to day.
Jake is married to Clare. They too have a good marriage and kids. They are best friends with Kaye and Rob. Jake has harbored feelings for Kaye for 20 years. Finally now that Kaye and Rob are living close he decides it's time to tell Kaye his feelings. He pursues her with vigor. Kaye decides she likes the attention from Jake and she may feel the same things. An affair ensues.
Then the world flips upside down. The truth has to come out. Once Rob finds out the truth he becomes possessive and though he is disgusted, Kaye belongs to him.
The ending is a great cliffhanger. You will be sitting with your mouth open, saying "huh". I can't wait to see where this is going. I despised Kaye in this story. She had it all! A great husband, great kids. Why was it not enough? I could relate to her some, I am 38 and have been married for a long time, but I love my husband. Even with being pursued by Jake she still should have said no! I feel like she is a selfish, lying harlot (I had to use a thesaurus here because what I want to call her is not user friendly). She wants her cake and to eat it too. I really do not like her!
Jake and Kaye met in college and became really good friends. Jake married Claire, while Kaye married Rob.Jake and Claire live in Texas, while Kaye and Rob live in Arizona. Rob and Jake decided to combine their engineering experience on one company Riverbend Inc. Kaye waited in Arizona until the oldest finished his freshman year in high school, while Claire waited in Texas. After the move to St. John Island Kaye and Rob decided to have one last party before school started, so they invited Claire, Jake and all their neighbors over for dancing, drinking, and pool fun. Rob and Kaye shared a very passionate kiss everyone clapped and cheered, except Jake. Jake finally admits to having feelings for Kaye. Do Kaye and Jake do anything about there feelings? I really enjoyed this book.
First let me say READ THIS BOOK! Having said that I put off reading this because of the issue of cheating. That is usually the one thing that will ruin a story for me however, this story drew me in anyway. I felt very sorry for the two spouses and children of Kaye and Jack, but I also felt the love that the two of them shared for each other. The ending surprised me. I feel like Rob is becoming very controlling and not handling himself very well. I can't wait for the sequel Saving Us to see how it turns out! Thank you for a wonderful story that surprised me!!!
I will be reading the next one also! I had no idea what this was about other than the author said some of this has real bits in it. I nearly did not continue reading this, the cheating made me very uncomfortable.
I was determined to read at least half way and see if I could feel for them. It didn't take that long and I'm really happy that I pushed on. I did end up being invested in them and on how things turned out.
Crazy how I was drawn in, Hutton did a wonderful job keeping me hooked. Great story and I'm looking forward to Saving Us!
Well written but the only people I could bring myself to care about were Rob and the kids. Jake was an awful person to selfish and kate was a woman with too much time on her hands. She treated Rob horrible. Used him for his money pretty island home. Wrecked so many lives with her bored housewife routine. This author writes well. Her skills 5 stars. I like to like the main character just couldn't. Betrayed everyone. The whole story never implied her children's names yet she cared. Ugh I couldn't stand kaye
I had a hard time finishing this book at times because I really hate cheating...especially when the adults are old enough to know better and there are spouses and children involved...I mean if you're that unhappy, get a divorce and then have all the fun you think you want. This book was so well written and there are a couple major twists and turns in this story...a big cliffhanger ending...so I will be forced to buy the next book to see where this train wreck is headed next.
Not an easy subject matter to read in a story but I knew some of the backstory from reading a future book about one of the characters mentioned in this book. I went in knowing that I probably wouldn't like one of the male characters but never expected to dislike all of the characters but one (the one I've already read a book about). I can't fault the book because of subject matter because it was written beautifully. The ending really floored me and I can't wait to see what happens!
I absolutely loved this book. At first I wasn't sure because it was about an affair but I quickly became attached emotionally to all of the characters. It was a heartbreakingly sad story that left you wanting to know what happened next. I can honestly say it was better then I anticipated. Well done C.M. Hutton! I'm ready for book #2!!
I loved this story. As intriguing as this story sounded, I have to be honest, I wasn't sure how I would enjoy this but boy was I surprised at how much I liked it! I cannot wait for the sequel because that cliffhanger left me speechless. I have to say, the sex with her hubby and Jake was pretty freaking HOT, LOL!!!!
I DNF at 40% I think the problem for me was the initial start of the book. I felt a huge chunk was missing. I almost wished we had a background of the college years or something. The whole affair came out of the blue and I felt it should have seemed more problematic and argumentive from Kay towards Jake. It seemed she didn't even care for her husband at all.
As heartbreaking as parts of this book were, I really enjoyed the story! I've had a tough time getting these characters out of my head and REALLY need book 2 to come soon! Can't believe this is based on a true story. I'm in love with Jake!!!! Good job, CM!
What a cliffhanger! WOW. This book is very well written and draws you in. I read this book without putting it down. What a great read!!! Now I can't wait to start book #2!
