Most people have heard about the trenches of the Western Front during World War 1, but this book takes us east to the Russian front. The diaries of an English Red Cross volunteer, the book begins a little slowly as the 'armies of the tsar' are in retreat. However, it becomes an increasingly fascinating read as Russia plunges not only into the war, but into political upheaval and revolution.

This was a fascinating read. The more I learn about women who worked in such primitive conditions so close

In the summer of 1914, Florence Farmborough was an English governess working for the family of a Russian surgeon in Moscow. With the outbreak of the war, she signed up as a Red Cross volunteer nurse -- first in Moscow and then a few months later with a field hospital at the front. Heartbreaking first hand account of a British Red Cross Nurse attached to the Russian Army during WWI. Took me 3 weeks to read this. The accounts were so intense and horrific that I would have to take a break from this book for a few days between readings. How anyone could witness these things and not wind up in a mental institution is a wonder to me. Also relates parts of the first few months of the Bolshevik revolution. I read this on openlibrary.org

Interesting book, easy to read with it being a diary and very little translation error. Good insight into the medical care of our often illusive Tsar Allies in the Great War.
Worth a read not full of action as you would expect and not full of boring medical jargon.
