Anne McAllister has written nearly 70 romance novels for Tule Publishing and Harlequin Books.
She has won two RITA awards from the Romance Writers of America — for COWBOY PRIDE and THE STARDUST COWBOY — and has had nine other books which were RITA finalists.
Her books have also been finalists for the National Readers’ Choice Award. She was named Midwest Fiction Writers “Writer of the Year” and also received Romantic Times’ Career Achievement Award as “Series Author of the Year.”
But while the awards and sales are wonderful, Anne thinks the best part of writing is telling the story. With every new book she writes, she meets new characters – or gets to know old ones even better – and discovers what makes them and their relationships tick.
It’s the relationships that interest her most and the question about “where do you get your ideas?” has always astonished her as she has more ideas than she knows what to do with!
This one starts out with our 25 year old widowed h leaving farm life in Illinois for California. She is going to act as a physical therapist for her grandmother. She has been widowed two years and had a very good marriage to the boy next door until he died in a farming accident. She is very frustrated because her entire family and in-laws keep trying to marry her off and she doesn't want that, she is over the worst of the grief, but her husband was special and he would be a very hard act to follow.
She is hoping to find a job doing PT after she helps her grandma out, and she looks forward to avoiding all her matchmaking relatives. (AMc did a great job on the relative annoyance, by the time the h gets settled in California, I was ready to strangle them too.) She arrives to help grandma and is met by the past.
Seven years earlier she was on a visit and and had a huge passionate crush on a wild surfer boy. He made a pass, she got mad and heartbroken he wasn't looking for love, and went home and married the boy next door. Now surfer boy is her grandma's tenant, divorced with a young son that he has custody of, cause his mum wanted a career as a stewardess.
He starts propositioning the h almost immediately, she gets mad but she has that old underlying attraction too, and it makes her angrier. They fight cause he drops his son off to hang with grandma a lot, and the h thinks he is taking advantage and living it up with the ladies. Lots of words are exchanged until the H sorta disappears for two days, then brings a little blonde home with him and leaves the son at grandma's overnight.
The h lets him have it, he shouts back and then we find out that the H is not only a children's book illustrator of dragons, he is a highly decorated lifeguard too, and the days he has been gone he was doing the Baywatch rescue thingy. He does all the bill paying, grocery shopping, house fixiting and dog walking for the grandma and in return she watches his son. The little blonde is a young lady from his hometown in Iowa that he looks out for. She cocktail waitresses in a bad area and sometimes the H picks her up late at night and gives her a shelter from her wild roommate's parties.
The h graciously apologizes and the H does too, and then the kissing starts. The H and h are getting along, kissing a bit but a huge spanner shows up in the form of the son's bio mum. She wants to exercise her visiting rights now that she is getting married again, and the H is freaking out over her maybe wanting custody. She can offer a two parent home and he is a single dad relying on his landlady for child care.
The h isn't sure what to do, she thinks the mum should be allowed to see the son, but she is unsure why the marriage broke up and why the H is so adamant about no access. The H grudgingly allows some little visits when it looks like the new stepdad is going to be belligerent about the mum's visitation. Then the H gets massively stung by jellyfish and the h has to help him out.
They wind up in bed and the rest of the story comes out after the H panics over the mum and stepdad taking the son out to buy the H a birthday gift. The H is not the bio dad of the son. The H's best friend died while he and the H were surfing and the H felt responsible. The ex-wife was actually the girlfriend of the H's dead friend and she wanted the H to pay for an abortion when she found out she was preggers after his death.
The H got her to marry him instead, but she threw things at him and gave him scars, and eventually walked out and left the son. (I was not feeling the lurve for the ex at that point, I don't care how young and scared you are, you have no right to physically abuse someone and I would think twice about letting a child around her too.) They divorced, he kept the son and loves him as his own, so the h jumps in an proposes to the H.
He turns her down, saying he wants to be married for the right reasons-- if he does get married --and keeping his kid isn't the right reason. The h is sad cause she loves him, but wonders if he loves her. She thinks he does love her, but then the H takes off camping for an unspecified period of time and grandma is all better now, so the h goes back to Illinois.
She is living her life and looking for a job when Thanksgiving rolls around and the H shows up with grandma and the son - there are already 23 other matchmaking relatives at the family farm - the H apologizes, tells her he loves her and will take her anyway he can get her, even if she still misses her husband.
The h tells him she loved her hubby but she loves him too just as much and a big kissing HEA with all the relatives staring at them via the kitchen window.
This is a sweet one, with some drama-- but really the H and h were nice people who just happened to visit in HPlandia. It is worth a read if you want an angst break and it is a definite respite from some of the books that precede and follow it if you are going in numeric order.

Rating 3.5 stars Heroine has been widowed for two years and her family is determined to remarry her, she isn't interested. She is happy to go and look after her grandmother where she runs into the hero again. Seven years ago, she was infatuated with the hero but he rejected her and then she got married. At first she thinks hero is the same but then he tells her to wake up and she sees how responsible she is, a good father. The book was enjoyable.
I liked this book. it was a 3.5 but I round up. I like the author. The hero likeable not awful to heroine. The story was interesting. Heroine was ok but needed a bit of tweaking, a few things annoyed me. overall nice read
