I am very impressed with the content in this book, and I was very pleased that it was under 100 pages, I still can't believe all of the information that was covered. I can't wait to read Mike's next book. I can into my first business with much confidence. Thanks for writing this Mike Piper, you have done an most excellent work on this small powerful tool.
I found Piper’s set of books through The White Coat Investor. wish I’d read this when I started my business three years ago. I feel much more equipped to talk intelligently with my accountant, and review my taxes for errors.
The information was extremely simple and easy to understand. I found it very useful to realize that not everything we buy for the business is "free" but rather we are getting things at a discount.
This wasn't a bad book. It was a fast read, and terms, ideas, and facts were represented in clear, understandable writing. I learned some good things from it. But I didn't learn everything I wanted or needed to. As part of a two person LLC, I needed some explicit tax advice, particularly as to how such LLCs are taxed as partnerships and the trickle down effects on personal taxes that has, as well as how to record startup expenses, what sort of liabilities such entities face, etc. I had to turn to an alternate book that had much more information specifically for LLCs. And perhaps that's my own fault, because the book does specify that LLC taxes (there are none for LLCs, to be precise, as I discovered come tax season) comprise only a third of the book via the title, but sometimes it felt like LLCs were the stepchild of the book, while the first two types of jobs/business owners were concentrated on a bit more. Or maybe I'm just being sensitive, I don't know. Whatever the case, as I said, it's not a bad book, but I suspect if you're an independent contractor or a sole proprietor, you'll get more out of it than if you're involved in an LLC. Recommended for certain audiences.
I would say that this book met its goal in the title of outlining the kinds of taxes you need to consider when being an independent contractor, sole proprietor, or an LLC -- all in about 100 pages. There cannot be a lot of deep insight included (and the author notes this) and still meet the 100-page goal. I would certainly say the book is worth the $5 Kindle price (or read for $0 on Kindle Unlimited or Kindle Lending Library). There are a lot of spots where you will need to do some more research or hire a tax professional, but the author notes this as well. If you need a quick read to get started considering your tax considerations when starting a new business, this book should be worth your time.
This book was an incredibly fast read that gave me a lot of insight into my taxes, which previously I was just leaving in the hands of my accountant. Now with his help I am paying closer attention to and documenting every deduction I can find. I'm also inquiring about other tax issues which can potentially save me thousands. Get this book, take notes, and go over it with your accountant.
I only picked this book up as a means to clarify a few questions I had for my Preparer ... Now I think I’m in the process of saving myself a lot of money ! As well as firing my guy 😎
I was looking for a tax organizer book and chose this instead. I am grateful for the detailed info and advice. I am mentally ready for what to expect in filing first year llc taxes.
Starting your own business can leave you feeling helpless when it comes to thinking about taxes... In very short order, this book gives you all the information to get you feeling more comfortable.
A straight forward understanding of what I need to do as a Sole Proprietor. It helped understand the ins and outs of basic tax deductions and what I can expect to pay through out the year.
This is a very quick read. His writing is solid, and he clearly answers the questions he raises. It's a great place to start, but definitely not a thorough text on the topic. Highly recommended.
Covers good breadth of the various tax levers for sole proprietors/self employed, didn't find explicit reference to LLC , maybe because the taxation model is same
