Johanna's Journey

Rate this book
A true story of love, loss and faith. Johanna's Journey chronicles the physical journey that Johanna and the author traveled together on earth as well as the individual journeys stirring within their minds and souls. This is the story of agony and ecstacy--of dreams and of nightmares that don't always end with the light of day. McGrath demonstrates a unique and interesting technique by using inserts from Johanna's detailed and emotionally-charged journal alongside his narrative as a way to reveal their story from both perspectives. Read this book and then go hug your loved ones.

The subtitle of Johanna's Journey is A True Story of Love, Loss and Faith. Lately, there seem to be a lot of these true love stories. Not to sound callous but most of these stories follow the same format: I met my partner, we fell deeply in love, some horribly illness/accident happened, and then our loved pulled us through.

Johanna's Journey is slightly different. I believe the difference (and the reason this book sticks with me) is that the author's purpose is different from other true love stories. Like other true love authors, Rick McGrath wants to celebrate his feelings for his Johanna but there is also a great deal of sadness and guilt that this man is obviously trying to work through. There definitely is a great love story here, of two real people who had happy memories and days that they would have rather forgotten. However, there is also a reminder to love fully because you just never know what life will bring next.
