A guide to the practice of Sound Balancing, using tuning forks to clear trauma stored in the human energy field
• Provides a precise map of the energetic biofield that surrounds the body, showing where specific emotions, memories, traumas, and pain are stored
• Details how to locate stored trauma in the biofield with a tuning fork and clear it
• 2015 Nautilus Silver Award
When Eileen McKusick began offering sound therapy in her massage practice she soon discovered she could use tuning forks to locate and hear disturbances in the energy field, or biofield, that surrounded each of her clients. She found these energetic disturbances correlated with the emotional and physical traumas her clients had experienced throughout their lives, the biofield acting as a record of pain, stress, and trauma from gestation onward. Passing the forks through these areas in the biofield not only corrected the distorted vibrational sounds she was hearing but also imparted consistent, predictable, and sometimes immediate relief from pain, anxiety, insomnia, migraines, depression, fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, and a host of other complaints. Now, nearly 20 years later, McKusick has fully developed her sound healing method, which she calls Sound Balancing, and created a map of the biofield, revealing the precise locations where specific emotions, memories, ailments, and traumas are stored.
In this book, McKusick explains the complete practice of Sound Balancing and provides illustrations of her Biofield Anatomy Map. She details how to use tuning forks to find and clear pain and trauma stored in the biofield. She reveals how the traditional principles and locations of the chakras correspond directly with her biofield discoveries. Exploring the science behind Sound Balancing, she examines scientific research on the nature of sound and energy and explains how experiences of trauma produce “pathological oscillations” in the biofield, causing a breakdown of order, structure, and function in the body.
Offering a revolutionary perspective on mind, energy, memory, and trauma, McKusick’s guide to Sound Balancing provides new avenues of healing for energy workers, massage therapists, sound healers, and those looking to overcome chronic illness and release the traumas of their past.
I devoured this book, which I discovered by serendipity the day it came out. Instantly, I sensed genius in it and set out to learn more about the author and her work. I have studied and practiced other forms of energy healing: Eden Energy Medicine, Emotional Freedom Technique (energy psychology tapping), past-life therapy, and so on. I have seen the effectiveness of addressing the human energy body (biofield) when seeking physical healing. I had not worked with sound as a vibrational source for healing, nor had I experienced it, and I had never heard of this author.
The book first delighted me with Ms. McKusick’s excellent summaries of up-to-the-minute research and theories at the leading edge of the new sciences, without dissolving into the anonymous lingo of academia. She writes in a very personal, personable style, telling her own story of discovery. It seems clear she did not consciously set out to become a pioneer at the forefront of the new energetic medicine; in fact she was busy running a family restaurant, raising two boys, and going back to school to gain the credentials to write the book and speak about her work. But I can see an exciting future for medicine that leads directly from her relatively simple tuning fork methods, and it thrills me. One day we may have fine instrumentation that duplicates what Ms. McKusick can do now with her coherent sound, only many levels beyond in terms of sophistication, and at frequencies far beyond our audible and visible spectrum.
I won’t attempt to explain what she does, why, or how in this review. For that, you have the book itself. (I have also written a lengthy blog post about my profound experience with McKusick after I purchased and read her book, and sought her out to experience her knowledge and skills directly.) Tuning the Human Biofield provides sufficient detail for others to try and test her tuning fork method.
After working for many years with clients, she has also compiled excellent anecdotal data on the “anatomy” of the human biofield, which spreads out from our bodies like rings on a tree, containing detailed, energetically-inscribed information about everything we have lived thus far. This diagram alone is worth the price of the book. Childhood trauma? It’s there, going back as far as the birth experience. McKusick’s resonating tuning fork will respond audibly to any glitches in the field, but it also puts out a steady, coherent vibration. That steady signal, combined with her trained senses and her client’s memories, can solve the mystery, realign the distorted field, and put the biofield back in order. Lives change as a direct result. Healing ensues immediately.
For those in the healing professions, I urge you to explore this new work. For the rest of us, I hope McKusick will be able to train many practitioners to use her “click, drag, and drop” methods of rearranging life-event traumas in the biofield into the sweetly resonating, sleekly operating, singing energies of a coherent life. Read this book if you want to learn how that can happen to you, then go out and seek the leaders in the field who can help you make it happen.
Yeah, I...I honestly don't know how this book got published. The first seven chapters are basically twaddle where she's trying to create a Unified Theory of Everything New Age, and there's like...one chapter on the actual work and how to do it. Like..it could have been a pamphlet. But then of course she wouldn't make any money.
Bottom line: she has no idea how it works, all her clients are basically experiments, she creates a map of issues that relate to the chakras (this part was actually interesting) and...that's it. I honestly don't understand the purpose of this book. Like. One would think either it would be theory and science or it would be a sort of practice manual, after which one would feel somewhat confident to pick up some forks and try it. While she states which forks she uses, she doesn't really specify which ones she uses at any given time (kind of the whole...thing?) especially since she doesn't use chakra tuned forks but prefers solfeggio tuned, which don't equate easily to chakras.
So best case scenario you get pumped because this seems cool, buy yourself a set of forks and start playing around...and basically you're reinventing the wheel because she doesn't give you a lot to go on. (The thirty or so pages of 'testimonials' is hallmark of classic New Agey padding and adds nothing useful to one's knowledge). Worst case scenario, toward the end she remarks how exhausted she is after a treatment and has even given herself a repetitive stress injury from it which like...uh...so you could actually HARM yourself doing this? That's. That's uncool. I'd like someone who is professing to teach me something to at the very least teach me not to hurt myself while experimenting!
Insightful and comprehensive, the 10 chapters and 3 appendixes combine universal truths we know with scientific principles.
Sound therapy (healing through precise sound waves using tuning forks) is explained in thought-provoking detail and provides an excellent reference guide to the frequencies of the tuning forks (for not only healing ourselves from various undesirable and often painful symptoms of body and mind,) but also to unlocking our best potential mentally and physically due to blocked energy flow.
A registered physical therapist I know, who specifically addresses lympathic drainage, depression, and muscle/joint pain in her patients, introduced me initially to this vibrational sound therapy. I now have my own set of comprehensive tuning forks and find them fascinating to work with.
This publication was instrumental and helpful to understanding the principles of this particular type of holistic modality with the proper use and sound frequencies for specific areas of interest.
TUNING THE HUMAN BIOFIELD is a profoundly insightful and inspiring work as well as a tremendous leap forward for the healing sciences. If I were designing an alternative medicine curriculum, this text would be required reading. In what is arguably the most comprehensive book ever written on tuning fork therapy, Eileen Day McKusick not only shows us the door to healing ourselves and unlocking our potential as energetic beings, but she also takes us by the hand and, brilliantly and eloquently, escorts us into new realms of possibility.
There is a lot of good information in this book and very clearly explained. My purpose of buying was to learn about the range of tuning forks and how each and every one is used for different conditions which actually was not covered in this book.
Eileen McKusick does a great job of weaving science and spirit. As a practitioner of Vocal Sound Healing for over 15 years, this book gave me some ideas that will be worked into my practice, and has peaked my interest in working with tuning forks.
Interesting material and im glad I read it, I think she’s on to something and she does a good job explaining her perspective on what it is and why it works.
But, it’s another one of those books that I can easily imagine the author was done but the editor said “add some pages, it’s too short”. A good bit of fluff that could be dropped with no impact on the narrative.
All said, I got this as a freebie from Audible and while I found it interesting I’m glad I didn’t spend $s on it.
Yes, I read the whole thing in a day🤩This book was incredible. As a perpetual student of music, acoustics, philosophy, and natural medicine, I very much enjoyed the combination of such topics. This text was thorough, well paced, and technical, yet easy enough for people not inclined towards the sciences (ahem…me🙈)to understand. All-in-all, a riveting read. Every page taught me something useful and meaningful. If anyone wants to buy me a tuning fork, you’re welcome to😂
The beginning of this book reads like a college paper with definitions of a lot of words and where she found certain information and how she then came to her own conclusions. I understand why she included this as this appears to be new science, but it isn't really fun reading. About halfway through, maybe further, it gets into what I thought I was going to read. However, to be honest, without all the preamble and definitions and how she came to those conclusions, I am not sure that I would have been so open to what she says. Her conclusions seem valid. Plus, when I bought the book, I bought it as a set with a "sonic slider" tuning fork and watched a few videos on how to use it. My wrinkles are fading and my swollen ankles have unswollen so much that I am down a shoe size. Which goes back to, it makes sense and it works. It sounds woowoo, but this works. I would like to attend classes to learn how to use the whole set of tuning forks that she sells on her website. I look 10 years younger, and I haven't finished reading the book yet. What could happen? I am looking forward to finding out.
One thing that surprised me and that sticks with me. She asks the question, why does science acknowledge that sound that we cannot hear can heal, but science does not acknowledge that sound that we can hear also can be healing and beneficial. The tuning fork that came with the book is a very low sound, to me is almost sounds like humming, but lower than I could vocalize. (I am a soprano.)
And... the first time I used the "slider" tuning fork my dog kept nudging my hand until I used it on him. He likes it, too, and he is the most aware and intelligent dog I have ever met.
The depth of physics and cosmology in this book pleasantly surprised me. I thought the book would be more about how to use the tuning forks, but much of it is about the emerging science behind it. McKusick is a skillful guide along the way, offering both her experiences, research, knowledge and critical skepticism which grounds the book away from the usual projections of “woo.”
I am personally convinced that our mainstream scientific paradigm will eventually shift and is shifting toward this direction and way of understanding emotions, energy, vibration, trauma, the body, health, disease, and our place in the universe.
This is a good book on an eccentric subject and the author brough in additional fringe theories to further attempt to give her healing ideas a scientific foundation. Although the book is entertaining, it's a little less than informative about the authors method. I expected an operational definition of vibrational sound therapy but it seemed to be the least covered topic. Also, there was much anecdote and less description of what is done in her healing technique. Also, there was some ill-defined concepts (e.g. her mail slot) which would best be describe as her intuition. Perhaps she makes much more money teaching classes. I'll look for other books about this subject.
90% of this book was unnecessary...for me anyway....and I got tired of her defining words for me, like the word “word”, no joke. By the time I got to the last chapters on actually using the forks, I was over it. I’m still interested in the subject and think it’s important, I’ll just find a different book for help.
If you want to learn more about sound healing this was a good resource. Author includes case studies and testimonials.
McKusick has a scientific mind and it comes through in her writing. She developed her own therapeutic method to using tuning forks as a healing modality, which she now offers through trainings, books, products, through her website and more.
I enjoyed reading her personal story of how she came to this. She went from working in her family restaurant business and needing serious physical healing, to taking up yoga and the healing arts as a vocation. Before reading it, I was mostly interested in music's healing effect on the body. Chapter 7-9 covers what and how she works with the tuning forks.
After reading it, I am more intrigued and interested in how a single tone or sound frequency has an effect on the body and the science behind it.
There are now even more questions in my mind about the subject. My biggest take-away was the idea that we cannot FORCE the body with healing. I am learning that in other areas of study too right now, mentoring with Carlo Monsanto and IOLEE. This books reiterates that same message for me. I went ahead and bought her next book, Electric Body and am continuing to learn about sound healing, music, what writers new and old have said about sound, music, and healing and how these fields intersect.
well it was rather technical for someone who never took chemistry or physics (the author didn't either but she learned it) so some parts I skimmed. But having said that, the practical applications, subjective stories and how it all works was great. I've had two sessions (before reading the book) so I'm majorly sold on the effects. So much of energy medicine/healing is subtle and I'm left wondering if anything happened. Not with the tuning forks....no doubt in my mind. So if you want to delve into the why's and wherefores, this is the book for you. I have no intention on being a practitioner so the parts on choosing and using the instruments didn't really apply to me but all in all she gives great advice and answers most questions I could conceive of. I don't buy many books new but glad I did this one.
What an incredible read. From start to finish, this scientific narrative had me locked in. As a curious wellness junkie I was excited to dig into the “science” that is behind sound therapy and healing. This book took me deeper than I could ever expect. Eileen does a phenomenal decoding complex quantum physics concepts to explain energy, sound, and the interactions of the two within and around the human body. She eloquently explains the ways our emotions, experiences, and memories live within our bodies and can get trapped in the biofield that surrounds us. Sound, by the way of tuning forks, is so powerful in finding, releasing, and unraveling past traumas to promote a more connected, free existence. I am walking away from this book eager to expand my sound healing rituals and learn more about the power of frequency integration in healing the mind, body, and soul. 10/10
I learned about biofield tuning through a documentary and got the book to further my education. I've experienced what the practice can do for you and highly recommend it. Eileen is a scientific based person and explains the practice well, and she will go as deep or shallow as you would like. I skipped over a few sections because it was over my head, but that doesn't mean the information wasn't valuable. This is a life-changing practice you can do for yourself and it really works! It's given me a whole new outlook on life since I've been able to clear the snags in my biofield. Just remember, everyone moves at their own pace, so when you're ready, I'd highly suggest checking it out.
Very interesting book and concepts. A few light bulb moments but not what I expected when learning how to use the forks. I have limited hearing, wear hearing aids and also have tinnitus so I struggled with the ability to hear differences in the tones. I would purely have to work intuitively which is one of the methods discussed in the book. It is apparent that Eileen has done thorough research and documented throughout this book. I look forward to science and spirituality coming together and more mainstream. Certainly a book to keep and refer back to.
I truly don’t understand how anyone could give this book less than a 5 star review. I assume they didn’t actually read it. If you read and apply what this book says your life will absolutely change for the better. I know mine did! I understand that it can seem a bit strange, but once you learn the science behind how it works, it absolutely makes sense. Then read her other book “Electric Body, Electric Health.” They also have great videos on YouTube and their website. Read the books, then go get a session done. You will not regret it! 💜🙏💫
Even though I was disappointed in the first chapters.. things eventually changed. Chapter 7 and 8 are the best, because they are the reason behind my excitement to read the book in the first place. i didn't really grasp the idea of how to apply the sound healing technique for myself.. It is fair to say though that I loved how genuine the writer is, her passion, her bravery to search and find answers then to speak her mind up just as is. She is definitely inspiring.
The curiosity, research, and openness to what is known as much as what is not known is refreshing in this book. I appreciate that she does not try to explain everything via quantum fields as if it's a panacea and instead digs into what we can prove with instruments and what lies still within the realm of experience and results without printouts and measurements with math.
I found it well written, accessible, and informative. Will be coming back to this writer again.
Well researched book on vibrational sound healing using tuning forks. Author provides scientific evidence backing the presence of the Human Biofield, and how the sound produced by different frequency tuning forks can help find areas in this Biofield that are not healthy, and help them become balanced. There was a how to use the forks chapter and case studies. I would have liked the case studies to be in a more scientific form.
I was hoping to learn about the various tuning forks and their applications for different conditions, but this book didn't cover that topic. Although the book is engaging, it lacks detailed information about the author's method, including a clear operational definition of vibrational sound therapy. The book relies heavily on anecdotes and lacks descriptive details about the author's healing technique.
I enjoyed this book. It is well written and the author has taken a scientific approach to developments in the field. It is worth your consideration whichever stand point you are coming from. The techniques are loosely described but enough information is given for people to begin to experiment with this potentiality.
I really dig this modality, I was introduced to it more than 5 years ago. The book is a resource I reference along with Your Can Heal Your Life and The Secret Language of the Body - - all good tools when issues of the body and mind seem to be underlying and emotional. I have also had brilliant results from distance Tunings using this method of healing.
This book has been an amazing and fascinating read for me from start to finish. Eileen's approach to the source material is very informative and coming from a skeptical point of view herself, I find this to be very appealing, as I believe we should question everything we find interesting. This has had so much of a positive effect on me that I am booking my first Tuning fork therapy.
Great deep dive into sound healing, electromagnetism, the Electric Universe theory, and so much more. Eileen is certainly a modern forerunner for these tuning fork practices of hers. Have a set of them coming in the mail tomorrow and can’t wait to get starting combing my bio field! I’m sure these skills and this book will be solid items in my repertoire of health for a lifetime to come :)
This book has been in my to-read stack for more than a year. Since I enrolled in another sound balancing class based on 5-Element, I wanted to read McKusick's approach.
The meat of McKusick's book begins on page 107. Her tuning approach employs a Hz framework to address chakra balancing. I wish there was more presentation on explaining why the Hz she has chosen.
Eileen Day McKusick has a gift to teach us how to relax thereby releasing decades of ailments. My wrist and hand was injured in 2008 and for 17 years, I had pain often severe and tuning forks released that pain after one use. I continue to use them daily and love the life saving reality of this ancient healing process. I hope more of humanity will awaken to truth in order to help themselves.
Yes!! Finally the science behind energy! While already practicing other styles of energy work, I am very excited to give this a try ! Great read and very, very informative !!
Very helpful information. I felt like it was hard to get into because it begins more like analyzing a dictionary with her defining words. I see why she chose to start that way, but it was tedious to me. I enjoyed the rest of the book though.
